@mathartzt see the updates ๐it's gonna be gone shortly ๐
@TJphilobsessed thanks Teri!! Y'all meeting up today still?
@PlantEsteem right? The cactus is already perfect and to flower like that too? A total show off.
@RJG Exactly....looking all perfect but still has to tell us just how cool he is!! ๐๐ฅถ Excuse me Mr. Cool Cactus....๐คฃ๐คฃ
Hey @RJG .....did you know #pricklypearcactus can grow in 3b?! Allegedly....I heard... varigation @caleb ๐คฃ) should I go for one in my rock wall???
@PlantEsteem just make sure you get one of the more cold hardy species. I didn't know they could make it that cold. But maybe there's one.
@RJG you give me hope. Imma research one and do it....maybe....I would love to have an outside cactus....but I do get to stare at your yard whenever you share.....decisions decisions......I'm definitely gonna do more reading up....๐ค๐ค Thanks!๐ฅฐ
@RJG ๐๐๐๐๐๐
@PlantEsteem I Love your rock wall ๐ it Rocks!!! ๐๐๐๐
@AnnMarie420 aww thanks!!!๐ฅฐ๐
@RJG Wow that looks like a serious competition going on between the two of you @RJG and @SirLiquorice curious who is going to emerge victorious ๐ค๐ค๐ป๐ฅบ๐๐คฃ
@RJG had to come out Whataburger me with this flower. Lol
@SirLiquorice once a year ๐ซฃ๐ฅธ๐
@RJG thatโs the problem with my discocactus. Flower only opens one time and at night so you can easily miss it. I missed the previous one. It sprouts out of nowhere and blooms and dies so fast you have to watch it closely. At least it gets several flowers a year but you have to be on alert to even see it bloom
@SirLiquorice yah I thought I had one more night or I would have more pictures ๐ฅธ๐
@RJG I need a cutting or pup off of that one. Lol
@tmbryant37 yeah if the flower only opens for a short time then it must be able to really show off to attract pollinators quickly in a very short amount of time. I wonder if my cactus that bloomed last night was pollinated by anything. Most will grow fruit or seeds as long as they are pollinated. But they bloom quicker if you grow them from pups or cuttings if the mother plant was already flowering
@RJG how long have you had this one? I was lucky and won mine for only about $35 plus shipping if I recall. It was a few months ago. People kept trying to out bid me every time I bid. So I had to wait until the last minute to bid so they wouldnโt keep bidding and make the price go crazy high. Plus I wouldโve been out bid right away otherwise if I didnโt plan out my bid at the last minute
@SirLiquorice 5 years ago on the 11th ๐ช๐ผ
@SirLiquorice it was $40 when I got it and about the size of its front pup ๐ฅบ
@RJG thatโs awesome thatโs a good price
@RJG I shouldโve gotten mine cheaper but they kept bidding $5 more every time I went up $1. I had to cheat and wait until the very last min so I wouldnโt get outbid. Had to fight for this cactus to get it. But they usually donโt seem to have a cephallum like this being this small and young. And it arrive looking perfect without any damage or ugly spots and none of the spines seemed to break during shipment since they are really flexible. They donโt seem to actually hurt like most cacti spines.
@SirLiquorice it was a very different plant market 5 years ago.
@RJG so youโre saying youโll sell that pup for $40 then right now then? Ok Iโm sending the money immediately. Lol
@SirLiquorice maybe if it branches again ๐ซฃ
@RJG whatโs funny is I think I paid $40 plus shipping for this baby Strombocactus disciformis. But thatโs because it was grown from seed by Mr. Gary Duke in California (who you should look up on instagram or he is in some of cactus quests YouTube videos if you arenโt familiar with him) he grew this one and it probably took him about 4-5 years for it to get a little smaller than this size. It was $40 because it seems to be harder to find and it took him a long time to get it big enough to be able to sell. Should have awesome flowers when it gets big enough. He has some amazing cacti in his collection. Over 1000 at his home and he sells some of them. We always video chat on instagram if I ever want to buy anything. So I am able to shop for cacti in California while sitting here in Texas
@SirLiquorice that's awesome!
@SirLiquorice can we get him and his cactus on Greg ๐๐ฅบ๐
@RJG I can try to invite him. He give lectures at cacti meetings in California and is extremely knowledgeable. He actually wrote a book helping to xeriscape your yard with minimal space also. He sent me an autographed copy
@RJG it would be difficult for him to add all of his plants but he could maybe add his coolest ones. He always posts pics of any that are flowering that day so hopefully we could have him post pics here.
@RJG his book has a chart to show you where you should place your cacti in your yard according to the latitude and longitude and the direction the sun moves in the sky. Trying to recreate the plants natural habitat and provide shade the same way it needs in nature to thrive. So it doesnโt get too much sun or too little. Some people read the chart and realize they planted their cacti in the ground in the wrong spot and now they have to move it.
@RJG main problem I can see is MR. Duke is already very busy with cacti sales and lectures and social media already. And he would be more of a resource for us and wouldnโt necessarily be a user of the app as much. We would probably need to at least advertise to help him with cacti and book sales and try to financially reimburse him for his time, otherwise it may not be worth the time for him.
We are about to release a bulk plant upload tool. ๐ซฃ @SirLiquorice
@RJG how does that work?
@SirLiquorice since I'm the lovable moron that talks plants and doesn't build the app, as best I can say, magic.
@RJG so you mean you can upload all of your plants to the app with one picture ?
@SirLiquorice even better. You move around and scan them and it picks up the pot volume and species. It's magic.
@RJG thatโs cool. Might take a little bit of time to work the bugs out, but that will be way more convenient. Iโve been too lazy to add about almost half of mine to the app because of how long it would take to find which ones I havenโt added and get pics and everything
@SirLiquorice that's what we're doing right now. The hard thing with your collection is I assume like mine, it runs more obscure.
@RJG yeah I have too many weird ones that other people donโt have and I have to add a new species. And lately itโs not letting me add new ones as you already know.
@SirLiquorice yah. Well we and people like Mr (Dr. ?) Duke will be key as it rolls out cause the algorithm will only get better at IDing the more samples it gets.
@RJG yeah I guess your right it should be Dr Duke. He has some airocarpus that are over 100 years old itโs crazy. And you should see his prized copiapoa and the ones in his collection that are not for sale. Just the ones planted in his front and back yard are insane. But he has some in pots that win contests and are priceless
@SirLiquorice can we just go to his house and geek out ?
@SirLiquorice FIELD TRIP!?
@RJG we could. He has invited me. But itโs so far. Would be an expensive trip. Would need to find a way to try and visit all the good nurseries in California around his area if we go. Iโve seen some crazy collections on YouTube videos and most were in California and some in Japan
@RJG. https://youtu.be/d9wTHg4Qy78.
@RJG https://youtu.be/8na6R9N3-vQ. I donโt know where this is but itโs cool to see cactus shopping in Japan. They are very serious about their cactus. I loved watching this video
@SirLiquorice that's crasy
@RJG Iโve looked at them before and seen the price, spirals and size. Justifying price vs quality. Iโll look for a young one.
