Rot or lack of water ? What can I do to fix this.

A month ago I got this Sulcorbutia rauschii, she looked much better, even though she still seemed a little soft. I have missed a couple watering days recently however she is showing some discoloration (the middle cactus/biggest one) it’s yellowish brown. She is soft but that could be because of the lack of water. She has many pups, I’m wondering if I could cut those off and if it’s okay to do so, if they don’t have roots. Or if I should wait for them to have roots. The roots were really healthy when I got her, & I planted her in bonsai jack mix with added soil. I water her every 15 days or so & she is under grow lights for 10+ hours a day. #CactusClique #Cacti #Cactus #RootRot #PropagationStation #Propagation #PlantAddict #HappyPlants #grafting

@TidyTigerpear also, if it ends up being water that it needs, a couple more days wait certainly won't hurt it. There's no need to debate 10 hours or 11 hours being the proper amount of light. Both will be fine, as long as the rebutia acclimates

Since you said you didn't introduce it to heavy light gradually after repotting, I'm thinking it could be sunstress combined with adapting to needing more water to regenerate roots before its gonna pump up again
If the softness is caused by lack of water, it should disappear about 2 days after watering. If it doesn't then there's another cause of this softness.
If pups are soft and not healthy, they won't root.
Keep her under the lights 11 h a day everyday. That's FOOD.
I'm not sure what is best for it. But I would really like to know how it goes!
I suppose you might cut the pups and they will grow their own roots like other cacti pups. But it may take a while. As you have so many you might try with one or two first?

Because of the color and it's squishy the mother might be rotten on the inside? In that case I guess separating the pups might be best.
I cut my cactus in half 9 months ago. The top half went more and more soft as it dried, and has just now started to firm up again (so guessing it has gotten its own roots that works now πŸ˜…).
But thinking that maybe your roots have been damaged in the repotting, or too little water, it might take longer before it hardens again? Repotting stress?
@MockingJay I agree, it has done this before when I water it , it has gotten more firm in the past, however now it’s showing this discoloration which is what is concerning me. Also yes I had to trim the roots anyways when I repotted, so that could be a possibility. I also thought it would be a good idea to test out grafting .
When you exclude underwatering, then you have to exclude one by one: frost, overwatering, and infections. The roots are healthy, so no pests there; I assume no pests on the cactus itself.
Contrary to popular belief cacti are sensitive to root trimming because their root system is small and shallow. I agree with these people above, it could be repotting and trimming stress.
@SvelteKingfern that makes sense, I will keep an eye out and see what it does
I wouldn't recommend doing anything rash right now. You recently got it, practically just repotted it, introduced it to new lighting, likely gave it a new watering schedule...

If you don't see any fungus or rot, I'd say relax! Give it a chance to acclimate. Cacti aren't exactly the swiftest organisms in the botany world, but they're very resilient.

That coloration looks like it could be light stress. Did you introduce it to the new light gradually?
@Dustmite no not really gradually, I wouldn’t say. It’s been about a month, but I’m not as familiar with cacti so it’s hard for me to determine what is going on with them when they start doing β€˜things’ …lol. I’m not sure if it’s fungus or rot that’s why I asked, the coloration etc made me panic along with the softness.
I feel like I'm seeing a lot more absolute language when it comes to cacti on the app these days... unless it's a visible infestation or sickness, then i think that momentary patience and continuous observation is the best course
@Dustmite absolute language ?
@Dustmite I agree, however with the lack of knowledge I wanted to be sure in case it was something that could possibly get worse, and then it would be too late for me to save.. guess I’m just a worrier
If rotting you’ll know. It will just mush and tear apart without any effort just barely touching it
@TidyTigerpear sorry I wrote that before seeing your other replies. I just mean I feel we're trying to be too definite in our assessments early on in the process. Time will often give us a much better chance to give our cacti what likely they need, no need to worry if you're killing the cactus by waiting another day. If there is no visual rot, it's fairly likely that the cactus is fine... and pretty certain that the pups will be too
Looks stressed and dehydrated
Could be repotting stress or changes in lighting and environment
Bonsai jack soil doesn’t retain any water from my understanding so you may need to add more organic material to the soil mix. Or water more often
Some plants shrivel away and die in bonsai jack soil since they never get enough water ever no matter what
@SirLiquorice @Dustmite so should I continue the way I have her under my grow lights if she is stressed ? What should I do , and I used bonsai jack because I tend to over water my cacti in the past, and I honestly thought it would be fine considering it’s a cactus, I know bonsai isn’t the best for all succs but I thought for sure it would be a good option for this cactus. I also added succulent soil mix to the bonsai jack.
I would back it away from the light for a bit... keep it close, but more indirect. My rebutia tend to be more thirsty, so more watering may be good for it
@Dustmite okay that makes sense, and I have been a little slack with water recently so I will try more frequent watering. That’s normal for bonsai jack anyways. But that’s a good thing to know about it never getting enough water. I noticed some have responded better than others, while some seem consistently thirsty to the point I can’t rehydrate.
I have never used bonsai jack... I've always made my own, slightly more organic soil. I'm definitely not experienced with it
@TidyTigerpear I prefer rabbit hill farms soilless cactus mix. You can order it. It may be another option to try in the future. https://maestro-gro.com/cactusmix.aspx
