Branching out

I have this Yellow Gem #Ficus, Lord Kypho, that I’m contemplating trying to make him branch out. I’ve read that you can cut the top cone off, where the next new leaf comes in, and that’ll prompt growth to become new branches. My question is, does it only produce one, or a couple, on average? He also has these nubs just above several of his leaves, would those become new branches? I don’t know what the nubs are. He does have a new leaf I can see coming in, so I’d wait until it pops out and starts to unfurl and grow before chopping the top off. But also this new leaf seems discolored, so would it be better to chop sooner? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ as always, you guys are awesome! Thanks in advance!

Hi Sami!

You can absolutely cut the top of your tree off to encourage branching. You cut just above a leaf scar and, depending on your plant's conditions, it'll usually send out 1-3 branches. Each branch will come out at a leaf just below where you cut.

The nubs are new branches. You can definitely leave it alone and see if they keep growing, or cut just above them and know they might all go wild.
