Happy Thursday #TheWateringHole !! ✨🌿 Quite a few of us seem to have had very exciting days yesterday, I for one am hoping for a nice calm Thursday 🤞

As for #pedunclewatch I am up to FIVE peduncles on my Hoya ‘Bella.’ I don’t know how I missed those other two on such a tiny plant, but I did. 😅 What an overachiever!

Have any planty plans for today? I hope it includes NOT putting perlite in a 415° oven 🥴

@DreamMachine Lovely peduncles🤩😍😍 Did I miss something? Putting perlite in an oven? Yikes! 😰 Hope your Thursday remains calm!
@Ms.Persnickety 😂 here’s the link for yesterday’s post, https://greg.app/post/1lt7is/not-sure-yall-are-ready-for-this-planty-horror-storyi-worked-memorial-day-so-had-a-little-extra

Deb @MamaLinne had a special variegated hoya get backed out over because the mail carrier left it right next to the garage door, and yes, I thought I could “just dry out some succulent soil real quick” in the oven. I did not adjust the oven temp from what it had been at. 😑🙈 Perlite popcorn 🍿!
#TheWateringHole @DreamMachine Good Afternoon, everyone! 🌞 I haven’t been on for a while! Returned two weeks ago from Texas, and while there I visited Lowe’s. I purchased a Caladium, which I ❤️ its gorgeous 🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃. A few minutes ago, I received plant mail from Gabriella Plant, which I purchased a Syngonium Red Arrow plant. She is going to be gorgeous as she starts growing during the seasons. Everyone have a great Thursday on purpose! More Plant Mail to come on Monday! 😉
@SweetAzurebluet well hello there Harriet! 🥰 Wow, both your new plants are stunning! 🤩 I love that style of caladium, so elegant! And your new syngonium looks like a mysterious and beautiful stranger 😅 I can’t wait to see your Monday #PlantMail !! I hope you have a lovely Thursday, on purpose 🥰
@DreamMachine If I am reading your text right, your Hoyas are developing flowers, boy that’s exciting!! Congratulations, 👏🏾 on that!!
@DreamMachine Thanks much, my dear! I read from Gabriella, that this Syngonium is a rare plant. I love the red undertones on the leaves. Will definitely post new plant Mail, when it arrives.
@SweetAzurebluet thank you!! It’s super exciting as these are going to be my first hoya blooms 🥳🥳🥳

And the funny thing, that underlines how much of an overachiever ‘Bella’ is, is that she is one of my newest hoyas, of my year of hoya collecting 🤭😅😲
@SweetAzurebluet I’ve certainly never seen that syngonium before! I had to do a double take!
@SweetAzurebluet Glad you’re back. Nothing like bringing back a plant souvenir! Now, getting plant 🪴 mail, too! You’re living the dream!!
@DreamMachine Wow, I can definitely feel the excitement in your text. 🙌 The newest and first to bloom, how exciting is that!! Well, you need to tell “Bella” to give my Hoyas a pep talk, because they haven’t bloom yet! 😩
@DreamMachine Yes, she is gorgeous! “Harmony” will definitely make things happen, right now she’s getting a bottom water spa 🛁! 😉
@RefinedSandwort Good to be back, making up for the two, I’ve lost while I was in Texas! 😉
This is so exciting!! It almost feels like it’s happening to me too! 🤩😂🫶🏼
I just listed about 7 more plants on marketplace to make room for the new babies. My hubby saw Amazon boxes and said, “Let me guess, plant stands and grow lights?” Look mister, don’t act like you know me! 😡 (yes they were plant stands and grow lights but that’s immaterial).

Orchid bloom #2 popped- super exciting! I’m in love with my new variegated heartleaf philo, and this zebrina is absolutely loving its new set up with soltech light above…look how she’s reaching with her little nose!!! The new leaf is 14”! 🥹I need to keep a close eye on her though and make sure she doesn’t fly too close to the sun. ☀️ 🔥
@DreamMachine FIVE?!?! That's AMAZING 🤩 👏👏 I definitely will be learning from your mistakes ma'am! No perlite in the oven! I had 25 plants to water today and am just about finished! I mixed up a batch of fertilizer for my Hoya while I was watering everything. Here are a few pictures... Have a wonderful Thursday!! 🥰💖
@MamaLinne 😂😂 Yes, totally agree, immaterial!

That phal is something else! What a gorgeous bloom 🤩 But that variegated philo…I don’t know which I like more 😍

Aww, your zebrina IS lifting her lil nose 🥹 Soltech grow bulb…the BEST 🙌
I’d love to be notified with new plants too!
@princesspitstop ooh, is that second one a ‘Chouke?’ I just got one with my ‘Mathilde,’ 😇 And hey! Your latifolia is around the same size as mine, twinsies! 🥰 Ugh I just love hoyas so much 🤤

And YES 🤣🤣 I escaped by the hairs of my teeth! I didn’t damage my oven at all, and I got my kitchen sweep done early 👏😂 I hope this still means I will have learned my lesson 😖🤭
@DreamMachine thankfully I got them on a big sale, and I use them for my ICU and high value (to me) babies!
@MamaLinne that’s the way! I’m waiting to find them on sale or at a good discount too 💡🛍️🏷️🧾☺️
Yes
@MamaLinne those plants are gorgeous!! The orchid blooms are so pretty! I haven’t sprung for any SolTech lights, yet. Have seen some I wouldn’t mind having.
I have a new leaf 🍃 that has unfurled on my green prayer 🙏 plant. It has gone from four to five leaves! Pray that I don’t kill it!
@DreamMachine oh my gosh!! I saw the backed over Hoya post😕 but missed the perlite popcorn🤣🙈Hopefully, peduncle watch will be much calmer the next few days! 🤞🏻
@DreamMachine perlite popcorn?😱😬😆
Not sure I want to experience that🤣

I'm just here going through my Calatheas leaves thoroughfully, looking for flatmites😅👀

Also, got an unexpected (and unwelcome😅) visit of 3 horses in my driveway a few hours ago😅..🐎🐎🐎 This is the third time this month 🤦‍♀️
Hi @DreamMachine and #TheWateringHole gang! I wish I could say I’m having a calm time with my plants, but I am not 😞. Tuesday it was mealies in the Hoya callistophylla, today I discovered thrips on an orchid 🙈🙉😦. And if you’ve got thrips on one there’s a very good chance they’re elsewhere too. Scrubbed the shelf where the patient 🤕 was living with 5 other orchids 😑. Diligently checking the surrounding plants 🪴 🪴 too. Now I have to find another isolation area 😩. At this rate they might all be spending the summer outside! 😳🤪
Anyhoo I’m gonna have to read more about this perlite oven story! 😮
@MariansOasis oh nooo, I had a mealy outbreak a couple of weeks ago and have definitely lost some sleep! Good luck and hugs!
@DreamMachine Not a Latifolia but close! It's a Macrophylla 😁 Confession...I had to look up Latifolia to see which one you were referring to lol
#TheWateringHole In spite of being neglected, we have day lilies and a hydrangea bloom !
@DreamMachine beautiful Nadia
@SweetAzurebluet your syngonium is perfectly gorgeous ❤️
@MamaLinne beautiful Deb. What are you posting on the marketplace 🧐🧐
@princesspitstop very pretty Heidi
@RefinedSandwort wow Joy they are so vibrant
@FitBrowallia Thanks Jonchel!! 🥰 @RefinedSandwort Your Lilies are gorgeous!!! 😍
@MariansOasis Sorry to hear about your plants. I know how precious your Hoyas are to you! Hope you are able to get rid of them, once and for all! 😩❤️
@RefinedSandwort Oh my, they are gorgeous, so vibrant, that 🌞 is doing them justice! 🙌
@FitBrowallia Thanks much, my dear! More Plant Mail to come on Monday! How have you been feeling and being?!
@princesspitstop ohhh!! Well then, it most likely IS a latifolia, bahahaha. The same thing happened to me! I was calling it a macrophylla and then I learned the name had changed! Well, not that it changed, but certain ones labeled macrophylla have been reclassified. There are still H. Macrophylla’s but it isn’t this one 😅

And here’s the link to that paper should anyone care for some *ahem* light reading 🤓 https://www.nparks.gov.sg/sbg/research/publications/gardens-bulletin-singapore/-/media/sbg/gardens-bulletin/gbs_77_01_y2025/77_01_12_y2025_v77p1_gbs_pg149.pdf
@RefinedSandwort Congratulations on the newly spouted 🍃! 👏🏾🙌 I don’t do so well with Prayer Plants, I will adore them through others!
@RefinedSandwort woohoo!! 🥳 🎉 That’s a serious improvement! Go green prayer plant 📣
@princesspitstop Haven’t seen you in a minute, how have you been!?
@MockingJay yes 🤣 And did I mention it was big perlite too? 1/2 inch chunks, 1-2 cm. 🙃 I thought glass shattered when I heard the first pop. 🫣

Whose horses are these?? What! That is crazy it’s the third time this month…it’s only June 4! 😜 Haha, I kid (I hope), third time in a month?

Hope you found a blissful absence of flatmites 😬😬
@MariansOasis 😭😭 Ugh I’m so sorry!! Thrips are nasty little buggers 👎😮‍💨😖

If you want a laugh, follow the link to yesterday’s post and I describe the perlite fiasco in the comments towards the bottom. BIG chunks of perlite 1/2”-3/4” pieces… exploding in my oven. I didn’t think that one through 🫠🫠
@Shells_Garden yes, it was quite…a thing, yesterday 🫣🤣🤣 I’ll get the link for both of you.
@MariansOasis @Shells_Garden

https://greg.app/post/1lt7is/not-sure-yall-are-ready-for-this-planty-horror-storyi-worked-memorial-day-so-had-a-little-extra
Thanks Nadia! Glad things have settled down some! At least tomorrow is Friday!!!
@DreamMachine I’ll definitely be reading 📖 up on the perlite fiasco! And yes thrips are the worst 😠. I’d almost want any other pest besides thrips. They’re so tiny and damage done from the inside 🫨😵😵‍💫. They were the impetus for my plant purge today. I just can’t deal with mealies, thrips and plants I don’t have room for or don’t want anymore 😑. It was sad but a relief too.
@MariansOasis sorry to hear about those pesky pests! Hope you can get rid of them soon!
@SweetAzurebluet it was a gift my stepdaughter. She rooted a cutting from her plant. This is my first attempt at prayer plants.
@MariansOasis oof. Well I’m glad that you decided to purge and that it gave you relief. 🫂 😔

And I 💯 agree, I would rather any other pest than thrips. Do you think they came on the plant you found them on?
@SweetAzurebluet Hi Harriet ☺️👋 I've been better than I disserve to be I guess 😁 Trudging along! Lol How are you?
@DreamMachine I’m not sure what’s happened. They were/are on an orchid that’s on shelving with just other orchids and none of the others have thrips as far as I can tell. I think somehow one of my SOP’s or SOD’s got them and I mistook it for too much sun ☀️- the dolphins & pearls were shriveling on some of the strings. They were both close to a window we open often so did the thrips get in that way?🤷‍♀️? And I moved one cutting/prop SOP to the shelving for a little orchid grow light sharing, right next to the orchid that’s now got thrips 🙈No other new plants were introduced in the LR for ages so it must be that… 😢
Hi everybody. Bit late to the party. @DreamMachine @princesspitstop not me, seeing this gorgeous lacunosa und latifolia, wanting to comment something about a size comparison (latifolia is a baaaby), the seeing the description as xxx macrophylla and fighting every urge in my body to not bring up that it might rather be a latifolia....
Only to read on to see your later comment including receipts. Migraine be damned, I'm grinning from ear to ear. I swear, Nadia, sometimes I find the similarities too uncanny to be true.
Speaking of similarities: @mockingjay of course that's what you were doing 😂😂😂
Btw: I finally found the adults. All of them. As in "all in the world". I had one plant I had banned to the bathroom because it was obviously sick/ infected. And I only now checked. Sooo.. though they are definitely smaller than my last flat mites, the female adults are actually big enough to (barely) see when in luck. Smaller than specks of dust, but you are not the only nearsighted person here 😀 and generally the adults are big enough for my camera to catch on macro setting after all. Aaaaand I don't want a microscope anymore because what I saw on my hoya 'Kicki' wants me to gouge my eyes out now, thank you very much. Too many mites and eggs to count within the area of a square inch. Literally. Especially on the nodes and in areas with destroyed stem tissue because they apparently like to breed and hide in there. I almost never toss out plants, but in this case I'm considering it. It's either that or place it as isolated as possible to use it to study it further and get a feel for how the new predators work. And if they can even get established under those circumstances (and should they manage, I'm pretty certain population size of the predators will explode. Yay).
So: keep on squishing/spot treating. And in case you haven't noticed (though I'm sure you did, considering your microscope), go for the direct endings of the petioles (I found eggs in each starting point of any leaf) and the scarred over tissue, especially along the stem. (I know calatheas might be different, but maybe some of this translates anyway. And you *did* say they survived on a leafless plant.)
@RefinedSandwort is beautiful. Don't fret too much. I've found it to be a very uncomplicated plant. Way easier than their cousins. Still, good humidity will help, not to many minerals in the water and you won't have any browning leaves, let alone a dead marantha.
And that hydrangea is to die for.
Happy growing.
@MariansOasis oh no, oh no, oh no! What is up on Greg lately. One infestation chasing the other (for some through battlefields of exploding perlite). Hope you will get ahead of them soon. Thrips and mealies give me nightmares since the beginning of my hoya collection. I'm already preparing since I almost weekly visit a house that is forever crawling with them 😀 if you aren't averse to predators, I could even recommend a very specific and detailed thrips on hoyas video I love but haven't tested out yet (luckily). 🤞 you can get them all.
@MamaLinne love your orchid bloom. Here's to months of color and joy. 🌸🌿
@DreamMachine it is one of our neighbours horses 😅 (one of two neighbours with horses, the others visits now an then too🙈🐎).. ooof we are already in june 🙈 Third time in a month yes😅 My yard isn't made for those big stuff, they leave huge holes in my grass whenever they step into my garden😅🙈🐎

No flatmites today! Trying again tomorrow😆
Oh, and congrats, Nadia on the two more entries on your very own race to the first own hoya bloom. I'm sure they will pull through. On mine most tended to blast way earlier than on those pictures.
Also, excuse me for being, well, me for two seconds: ha! Mine will be first. Not to be competitive, of course. 🤦‍♀️ Sry, don't know where that came from. Probably because I had already needlessly used my (presently very tight) budget of impulse control on the macrophylla/ latifolia earlier. I don't human well today. Or rather I don't decent-human well today 🙃
@MusicalRedmint eww😖 You don't want to touch that. At least I have my "infestation" (can't even compare it to what you are struggeling with) under control now😖

I think I would just throw that whole thing out🤪
But would be interesting to see how the predators work!

Thanks for the heads-up!
@MusicalRedmint Are you referring to the Krohniana Splash (first picture) being a Lacunosa? I do have a Lacunosa Snow Caps but it isn't pictured. Please tell me those haven't changed names too and I didn't get the memo?? Which is absolutely possible 😂 @DreamMachine I read the pdf link you sent. Very interesting! I had no idea. I always love to learn especially when I have them tagged wrong. Thanks 😍👍
@MockingJay that's why I'm truly tempted. I might be even a bit more unserious than usual today, but that one was real. A tad crazy, maybe, but meant seriously.

I think I trust the rest of the predators on the other plants well enough that they can deal with the infestation on all the other plants reasonably well - including possible stray transmission from this particular biohazard. She doesn't seem virused, so I don't think there is a big risk regarding shading worse things if I keep her for now.
And truly, I already learned so much from just checking her yesterday. I feel immensely better prepared for my next bout of flatmites.

So: if the swirskii mites don't work after all, I'm fu...lminantely discombobulated anyway. You cannot wash the flatmites off completely, I don't use oils, systemics, sulfur, DE, and am highly skeptical of trying the warm water method. Leaving me with nothing to combat them. And since I've already found stragglers on half of my plants, a few more mites transferred to them really wouldn't make a big difference in the nightmarish distopia my hoya collection would devolve into.

And like I said: if the swirskiis *do* work and can establish a colony on the overrun Kicki, the extremely high amount of prey with luck will lead to a huge amount of new swirskii mites I can distribute in areas they might not have been able to get established before. 🤞 crazy, borderline disgusting in part, but maybe not the worst idea I've ever had
@MockingJay lol I would be beside myself if 3 horses showed up in my driveway! 🫢 They all look very much at ease, like they’re out wandering the neighborhood as usual 😆. With their halters on too 🐴
@MamaLinne thanks for the good luck and hugs! Definitely need both when navigating pest management! 😩 It’s overwhelming and ofc I’m convinced they’re everywhere now 🫨 so much cleaning going on 🧹🧼🧽🫧 that certainly wasn’t scheduled 😑
@SweetAzurebluet hi Harriet! So nice to see you 👀 here! Your caladium is beautiful!!!🤩 The syngonium is too of course 🤗🥰
@RefinedSandwort your lilies and hydrangeas are so pretty! I love this time of year in the garden!
@MamaLinne oooh 😯 that orchid is beautiful! 🤩 And your zebrina is so happy. She’s definitely reaching for the stars ✨
@MusicalRedmint yes what is that all about, so many of us chasing pests?!?! Guess it’s springtime 🤷‍♀️ and everything is popping out including our voracious pests 😒😤. Loved “…battlefields of exploding perlite.” 💥💥
@MusicalRedmint I’m chuckling at far too many points to respond to before I leave for work! I will bow in your direction regarding the Bella race 🙇‍♀️ I did not realize just HOW much water the Bella drank. Hoping to catch up now…just watch! I’ll be…a close second 😅
@princesspitstop I hope the lacunosa didn’t change as well, but I am ignorant in that regards!! 😅

There is another interesting article(s) out there about the Hoya sp aff burtoniae as well! I’ll try to find it after work if I remember 🤗
@DreamMachine have the fun day you deserve.
The race is on.
And yes, she guzzles away like a fish. Only one plant in my collection I let bully me into upsizing the pot solely on the grounds of the (for me) insane watering frequency she demands. Only plant ever. Truly
@princesspitstop I am being well. I was in Fort Worth 2 weeks ago, but other than that, taking it easy.
@MariansOasis Thanks much, my dear! The Lowe’s in Texas, had other colorful Caladiums. I was almost tempted to get a pink one. I am loving the Arrowhead Vines, this makes number 3!
@princesspitstop yep that's the one. I think the jury is still out on the existence of the krohniahna as a distinct species, generally. But a) no consensus doesn't mean either side is right and b) I don't recall my sources and if they were even up to date.
BUT:

*if* there is a distinction, the true krohniana from what I've read, apart from the very slight difference in blooms should feature one main trait that sets it apart. Consistently heart-shaped leaves. Not 99% and then 1% not quite, but consistently. Basically you need a true indent where the petioles meat the leaves on every single leaf, from what I understand.

Especially when bought from bigger moon specialized stores you can assume that it's not a krohniana but a lacunosa. Funnily enough even when it looks like one. Lacunosa leaves can vary widely in shape and color depending on parameters like light, fertilizer, humidity... my own minty lacunosa looked almost completely heart-shaped when I bought her - except for one or two outliers I grew out several props and they all look different now.
So, given that many people don't look closely, and/or care (because why would you if you're not a nerd? They are gorgeous either way) and at least
at the beginning that all those lacunosa/krohniahna cultivars became more of a thing the krohniahna was priced higher, most mass produced lacunosas of course became krohnianas. Because, capitalism. That's at least my hot take.
Same goes for the big cultivar names. I'd never call mine a "Mint Coin" lacunosa, though it might even be one from the looks. those names technically stand for very specific cultivars with distinct genetic material, some of them get chosen/famous for traits that don't have anything to do with the looks of the leaves or even maybe looks at all. Fragrance, bloom shape, or overall health. my weird brain would just find it almost blasphemous to call my plant a specific cultivar without enough info, just because it looks like it. But again, a mint lacunosa goes for less than a true Mint Coin among collectors. Sooo... 😅.
(Don't worry, that was a rant for myself not owners of falsely id-ed plants. The krohniana thing is just a particular pet peeve of mine because my lacunosa was among my first hoyas and a no-id. So I asked around what to call it. Which led me down this very rabbit hole and only left me frustrated in the dust because the information on it is so 💩py. Just like for the sp.aff. burtoniae/true burtoniae/DS70 thing @DreamMachine mentioned.
@MusicalRedmint Wow! I just got my first bloom last month from it and of course I took pictures 😂 I'll have to go look. The Conservator "Sonny" got me started on my Hoya journey and the Krohniana/Lacunosa is the first one he gave me 🥰 I just assumed that was what it was 🤷‍♀️ Thanks for all of the information! 👍 And yes all of its leaves are more teardrop shaped.
@SweetAzurebluet You know I've never been to Dallas/Fort Worth and I was born and raised here. I'm closer to it now than I have ever been. I should probably put that on my bucket list 😁
@princesspitstop Sry, but it needs to be truly heart-shaped, not teardrop, the way I understood it.. specifically including the small indentation I mentioned. I marked the area in the image I found. And while many seem to look like that, some don't quite, are a bit more stretched out and less flat at the bottom? Top?

I'd argue against at least one leaf i noticed first that made me think lacunosa in the first place, maybe one or two others as well. Of course it might only look like that to me because of some weird perspective in the photo😀
And as highly as I regard @TheConservator's vast experience overall, I remember some conversations that showed that he a) wasn't quite as nutty as others (😅)about plant ID generally and hoya ID specifically and b) that one of his main hoya sources was a lady from which sold at least one falsely IDed hoya to him once 😀 had a lengthy discussion with him over this, spanning more than once thread to the point I even consulted *my own* hoya lady on it, just to be sure😀. That can happen, my point is not that in the vast and ever changing world of hoya IDs that's an unforgivable sin (if it's not deliberately or a recurring because you don't educate yourself first on what you sell). It can happen. But that false ID back then was a clear-cut case, mixing up two slightly similar but still easily distinguishable species, without any controversy surrounding it. And that happened to her in that case and he himself didn't notice, then I don't think the chances are that in considerably murkier cases like this one, a possible false ID would be even more likely.
Or, you know, there is no distinction anywhere. Or they are so closely related or doesn't matter. Or leaves like this are already close enough to the defining heart shape. I'm very (very, very) far from an expert on the topic and yours truly looks very close to consistently heart-shaped
@princesspitstop
Of course that goes for mine as well. This one here is covered in beautiful hearts like this, but because of some few like in the other picture, I'm not confident it's a true krohniana from what I've read. (And truth be told I no longer bother quite as much to find out, so I always forget to check out the blooms when it flouffs up.
@MusicalRedmint Thank you so much for you sharing all of your knowledge ☺️ 💖 It doesn't make me love them any less to be honest. If I were going to sell them it would definitely be a different story. Half the fun is sharing cuttings back and forth with my friends. This has given me something to look into because now I'm curious to see if any of the ones that I have are tagged correctly.
@princesspitstop same. Like I said, by now, I've taken and raised, gifted and kept almost enough cuttings from those krohnianas/lacunosas in question to supply each and every house in a small village. Love them to bits, no matter the name. Enjoy yours, 🤞 for a new wave of happy flouffballs soon
@MusicalRedmint Eeek I can't wait ❤️🙏
@MariansOasis I am 💯 the same way, and find myself getting horribly itchy whenever I discover pests 😝 🤮😵‍💫
@DreamMachine OK, my Bella really needs to pick up the pace! 😮 I’m choosing to believe that THIS is her summer to bloom too 🤞🏻👀👏
@debbiedo Yes! It will! Do you water yours often? Because Bella is a *guzzler* of water. I wish I had repotted her in substrate before I found the peduncles…because now in her little temporary cup o’ perlite I literally have to water her every day 😵‍💫💦
@DreamMachine I water her weekly-ish, but she in in a pretty small pot…maybe she needs more 🤔
