It’s Wednesday at #TheWateringHole 🌿🌤️ Good morning everybody, or should I say good day [good evening, and goodnight!] ?

After several days of ~95° 🥵 I am so very very grateful to be back down in the 70°s 😮‍💨 My plants, however, thought it was swell!

As I was moving around my plants this morning I was thinking about the satisfying little tasks of plant care that are delightful.

For me, one of my favorites is plucking off the totally brown and dried-up sheathes of cane begonia leaves. No force necessary, once they are brown and shriveled, I just touch them and they fall off in my hands. And I don’t *have* to do this, as they will fall off eventually by themselves, but it brings me joy. 🥰

Another one is when I water, and the saucer fills up but does not overflow, and later when I go to check all the water was sucked back up and the pot is the perfect “well-watered weight.”

Do you have any small plant care tasks or activities that give you satisfaction or delight?

Also, eeee, new Hoya callistophyla leaf 🥳

Hey there. For me it's good evening. And since the past few days really took it out of me, it's alkyl good night as well, though it's still early. Today was warmer but still overcast. Usually I find simply watering the indoor plants very zen, but I'm even a bit too tired for that rn. But, funny about your joy while cleaning up those leaves. I remember during my university days, I had an apartment with a balcony and several plants that regularly grew an abundance of seed pots (violets, nasturtium, geraniums...) And I just loved snipping them off with my fingers. Mostly while I was on the phone with friends just chatting away. Very relaxing and also really not necessary (only maybe because can prolong the blooming season somewhat) Congrats on the macrophylla leaf. Have a great day
@MusicalRedmint ooh yes, seed pods! That makes me remember certain catkins (I believe) that I loved as a child. (I think they mightve been birch? 🤔 ) They were only about the size of your pinky finger, and were composed of dry papery flakes of seeds. Best I can describe 😅 I would lightly roll them back and forth between my fingers until they burst, and released their seeds everywhere. SO satisfying 🤤

Have you acquired any beneficials? Regardless I hope you have a very relaxing and restful night 🌙 ✨

Update for others: question not reserved for houseplants only! 😄
@DreamMachine

Hi gals and guys!

Repotting my HUGE Golden Pathos and HUGE English Ivy today!

Hopefully there will be photos 😃
@CutePolypremum

Hello Joanie love! That’s exciting 🥳 Did you find a taller spot or find a tall piece of furniture like you mentioned earlier for your golden pothos to dangle from?

Tell Kim she’s a dear 🥰 Good luck with the repotting 🌬️ ✨
@CutePolypremum Oooh, I can’t wait to see pictures Joanie! 😍
@DreamMachine @MusicalRedmint I can’t stop myself from picking dead bits off of plants, even when they’re not my own 😂 Deadheading petunias and geraniums in the summer is SO satisfying 🫠
We’ve got several wildfires in our area and my parents had to evacuate due to one of them 😬 It’s looking very probable that their house is safe, but we don’t know when they can go back. So big family slumber party at our house it is 🥰 I’m spending the morning giving all my plants a sip of mosquito bites tea in hopes of ending the fungus gnat take over that seems to be afoot 👀 🫖
😬away with those birch seeds, Nadia. Those things give me hives. Maybe not quite literally (though I do remember having bad bouts of hay fever during pollen season from them as well). But I grew up on the first floor of a house surrounded by a beautiful overgrown garden. And not far from my slanted window over my bed was a birch tree as well. And in good German tradition, that window was opened a lot. Flakes of birch seeds everywhere. On the bed, the floor, in between the pages of my books... you get the picture😅 but, similarly to those: some kinds of evergreens protect the new growth with some kind of (sometimes a bit sappy, but generally dry) sheath/cap. I'm terrible at keeping them apart, so don't ask me which ones, but removing those caps? Who needs drugs. Same goes for the dried tops of dandelions right before they get flouffy.
Also: huh? I thought I already mentioned the swirskii already. For now that's it. I don't seem to have other pests than the flatmites, and fingers crossed they will continue to make short work of them (those b...s are truly everywhere. Just spotted some on my heuschkeliana last week)
@MusicalRedmint are you freaking kidding me? 🤯

I grew up, not on the first, but the attic, of an old 1800’s house with a beautiful overgrown garden (kids from school dubbed it the Secret Garden House) and I had a slanted roof with a window in it over my bed, and two birch trees right outside. And yes, that window was also opened frequently 😅
Apart from the fact of another ridiculous parallel.... are you kidding me? And you still like them??????
@DreamMachine Lovely new leaf. From the angle the picture was taken it looks as if the new leaf is growing out of the the leaf above but that’s impossible!??
@DreamMachine but truly, it's getting absurd.
@MusicalRedmint 😂😂 I guess I didn’t even give it much thought. But I was also very lucky to not ever have any allergies growing up 🤞

Re swirskii mites: oops, must’ve misunderstood. I thought you had the cucumeris but needed the swirskiis 🤷‍♀️
@debbiedo oh dear! Mandatory sleepover 😆😆 Please keep us updated, I would be very relieved to hear that the fire doesn’t get to their house 😮‍💨 😮‍💨
@Ms.Persnickety Here you go Monika, here’s an angle from the side of that picture. My begonia is extremely full, so leaves are overlapping one another. 😅
@DreamMachine Thanks for the bushy Begonia pics. I must apologize for not mentioning which pic I was referring to it was the Hoya pic with the tiny new leaf andyour hand in it. Sorry about the misunderstanding.
I love going over each plant carefully, looking for pests, problems, or new leaves and growth. It’s very meditative for me! I’m loving this new krimson princess leaf today!
@DreamMachine , holy guacamole 🥑 your begonia is ginormous and amazing! Remember the “blooming keiki orchid? “ She is throwing a bloom stalk!!🤣🤗
@CutePolypremum , Oh My Goodness! Solidarity sister, I have been there many a time. 💪🏼
@MamaLinne , gorgeous!
@debbiedo when they just fall off in your hand with a lil crispy crunchy sound 😘🤌 *chef’s kiss*
@Ms.Persnickety ohhh 🙄 bahaha! Well, YOURE WELCOME for the begonia pics 🤣🤣 and now to the HOYA.
@DreamMachine , maybe you miss me? 🤔
@CutePolypremum WOW 🤯 that is some serious root porn 😱 You’re going to have a couple extra happy plants today!! 😲
@HolyLacealoe I do 😂😂 She’s throwing a blooming keiki blooming spike?! 🤣

All jokes aside, that is great!! 👏👏
@DreamMachine Thanks again for the Hoya pic that little leaf is so cute and the large one above is very impressive, looks like it’s trying to protect the little one!
@Malagueña oh we’d be happy to add you Bob! These are our posts to #TheWateringHole group ☺️
@MamaLinne @MariansOasis @princesspitstop @RefinedSandwort (and anyone else saving group tags) would you all please add Bob @Malagueña to your lists?
@DreamMachine that almost looks fake it so pretty and SO green 🥰 I can’t grow Hoyas for beans ☹️
@DreamMachine , thanks Nadia.
@MamaLinne omg Deb this KP leaf is BEAUTIFUL 🤩😍 A quintessential “wax plant” leaf, living up to their name!
@DreamMachine nope, no misunderstanding then. That's 100% correct. Had cucumeris, was advised to switch to swirskii. But you best believe I did that immediately. My supplier is close enough I can drive there myself, roughly 45 min drive. I thought I had already talked about that I already got them. I've been creepily watching my little new mite farms since then as well. Btw: got a "light bridge" for my birthday recently (no clue what that's called in English: basically an LED tube you can set to different colors that you can fasten to two bases, so it looks like a rainbow). Because it's not really my thing I forgot about it after testing the settings for a while. Which led to basically me decorating my coffee table like an upscale red light district for predatory mites. Basically I had left several packs of mite "farms " for inspection on that table and evening fell and the mites happened to be directly under the arch that was lit up in a suggestive neon pink. All it was missing was a blinking pink arrow.
@CutePolypremum that's some impressive root porn
I love deadheading flowers. In the summer I can stand in my yard for hours snipping off dead roses, cosmos, geraniums (those I actually just pop off, it is extremely satisfying for some reason), dahlias, zinnias… and on and on. You get it lol! I think deadheading cosmos is my favorite because each plant can have dozens of flowers at once, and over the summer they produce hundreds! And I love to stand there and have all the fat, fuzzy bumblebees buzzing around me. 🐝🐝🐝 They’re so used to me now, they aren’t even wary of me. Sometimes they even land on my arm. I love it 🥰 also there is something deeply satisfying for me about helping a stuck leaf in a philodendron or a pothos break free. And I love plucking the dead leaves off my echeverias. I’m glad I’m not alone! 💗
@Ms.Persnickety You’re very welcome! Aren’t they so cute? 🥹 I just love how impossibly small the new leaves start out 🤏🥹😭
@MusicalRedmint please forgive me 🙏 😜 I think almost everything flew instantly out of my brain as soon as I found my own unwelcome broad mite tenants 😆

That is great you have a supplier so close! I think mine is pretty close to me as well 🤔 but I don’t always have vehicle access, so I settled with shipping for this round so I could check it off my list as soon as possible.

And I am DYING at your upscale red light mite district 🤣🤣🤣 If you put your ear real close do you hear a faint club beat? 😂🤭💃🏻

Happy belated birthday! Did I know that?? Brain not working still! What I’m imagining is like a neon light sculpture… or something 🤔 is that close? I might need a picture…for research purposes.
@SillyPlantGirl Thank you so much! I love them, and, well, if they bring you joy, I hope you keep trying ☺️

If you’re interested, these are a couple of hoya info sources that I like and trust:

Website, Vermont Hoyas- just a guy who has had a hoya obsession for 20 years and records useful information.

YT Channel- Basie Plants -chaotically hilarious but also very informative hoya enthusiast ☺️
@BabeVila yassss!! To all of this. The bumblebees buzzing around…heaven. And oh when the old flower head just pops off in your hand 🙌 …. that sounds… suspiciously dirty, LOL, but I think you know what I mean 🤣🤣

And yes! yes to the old echeveria leaves. We are so totally not alone 😁😁
