Hello my loves 🫢🌿 Happy Tuesday #TheWateringHole , or should I say, happy #untidytuesday 😏 (It’s ALWAYS #untidytuesday at my house, ha ha ha! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜„β€¦πŸ₯ΊπŸ˜πŸ˜ ) It’s been hot here, the last few days (80Β° F πŸ₯΅) and we are all looking forward to rain 🌧️ β˜”οΈ tomorrow and in the 60°’s again, ahhh πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ. Plus that means I might not have to water anything outside 🀞🀞

I’ve been putzing around, doing planty chores, and checking on all my props from @IdPlantThat πŸ₯° Practically EVERYONE has been doing great πŸ™Œ My new favorite method of propagating!: perlite + a ziplock bag + my own hot air 🌬️ I live in a cool, wet climate, as most of you know already, and I had horrible luck with sphag. It always molds 🦠 instantly, or at least, within 12 hours πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« I love this perlite + bag method because it is not inducive to mold growth, roots grown in perlite are more like soil roots already, and each bag is its own humidity box AND quarantine station!

How are you all doing today? What’s your favorite prop method? πŸ₯°πŸ₯±πŸ«Ά

@GracedStrapwort Hi Deb, πŸ‘‹ to answer your question yes, just enough water to moisten the Perlite. Actually, if you rinse the Perlite off first before adding it to the plastic bag that will be enough water to propagate in.
@DreamMachine Thanks for sharing! Dobyou add any water to the perlite? I'd like to try this. Thanks!
@DreamMachine Good morning 🌞 Perlite has become a favorite of mine as well. Another favorite is Fluval. Made from volcanic rock, it's very nutrient rich and an excellent choice for propagating cuttings with thin roots. Plus they don't get stuck and twisted up in it like Sphagnum moss does. πŸ˜πŸ‘
Thanks for that, Heidi. I'll have to check that out as well. @princesspitstop
@GracedStrapwort You'll be surprised how fast the cuttings produce roots. I'll never propagate in water again! πŸ˜πŸ‘
How would that work with succulents I wonder.
@DreamMachine Nice props and like Deb above need to know about moisturizer other than you tuting your own horn . Also would it work with corms ? I’m doing laundry and hanging outside so this smut is doing overdue planty chores too . That trusty old baggy is drying out my surprise asparagus seeds . I got one stalk this year and a birdy must have dropped it about three years ago. . Hello everyone at #TheWateringHole
@GracedStrapwort @ILoveMyPlants For Deb and Deb πŸ˜„ oh yes! Let me share my full method:

1. I put a handful or two of perlite in the bag. (I usually don’t prewash my perlite, so I clean it now, and that also preps it for my propagations!)

2. I fill the bag with warm water, swishy swishy, then I ziplock the bag *almost* closed and let the water drain ALL the way out, keeping the perlite in the bag.

3. Now you have damp, but not wet, slightly warm perlite. Ready to put props in.

4. I blow air into the bag and seal it up! (My husband happened to walk into the kitchen and burst out laughing while I was doing just that πŸ˜‚)

5. That’s it! Put the bag in a warm stable bright environment without blazing direct sunshine and you pretty much are done until you see roots. I re-blow up the bag if I see it droopy at all, and if I stop seeing humidity fog/water droplets then I would spritz the inside of the bag with water, but I haven’t had to do that!
@princesspitstop ooh yes, I think my monstera I bought on fb marketplace might be in fluval. It’s hard to find now that all us plant people have started using it!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ It used to be at any pet store for cheap!
@princesspitstop @GracedStrapwort whoops, I didn’t scroll down far enough to see Heidi explained it, before I gave you my long winded answer Deb! πŸ™„πŸ˜‚
@BEsucculent you know I don’t think I would do this for succulents πŸ€” They don’t really like humidity do they? In general? I supposed it could work for some if they like humidity while rooting.
@ILoveMyPlants that’s really neat! Asparagusβ€”the long wait, but unstoppable once they get going πŸ™Œ
@DreamMachine I'm glad you did because I would have never known about the warm water and the blowing up the bags trick!!! πŸ™Œ Thank you!! πŸ‘πŸ™
@DreamMachine I appreciate the long- winded version. 😊 Thanks
Dang, it happens every time I start writing this out; something comes up and I can’t finish. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ Anyway, my latest propagation has been a little of some creativity on my end. I used a plastic red kitchen strainer. 🀣 I live in a desert 🏜️ so dry and hot. πŸ₯΅ We have no humidity! So sphagnum moss (drained of excess water) bulbs on top and a starter mix I make which is Lightning Warrior; Harvest Hero perlite, and volcanic substrate on top. This is my first time growing caladiums from bulbs. So I guess we’ll see if my solution for a well-draining situation worked πŸ˜³πŸ˜‚πŸ™ˆ
@DreamMachine oh I do kind of perlite-bag tooπŸ˜„ Exept I use pon, and in a pot inside the ziploc usually πŸ˜† Or I re-use plastic boxes which have contained tomatoes or bird-seeds or something to use as "hats" (or pots🀣).
Perlite is great! I’ve got this set up in my office. The container has slits so air can get in, the dome can be easily removed or opened for air exchange and keep a grow light above.
To water it I usually dunk the bottom in the sink, no worries of splashing water on the plants.
@DreamMachine you’re so right. I’ve been spending the day discovering which of my plants is dormant. I discovered that if a plant is dormant it won’t even root and a lot of exceptions to all the rules so that I have to research nearly everyone. πŸ˜“
I haven't propped a lot of plants yet, but I just started some African violets. I put several in pots and then in a bag with a tiny bit of it unzipped for air flow. Another one is in the same type of pot, with a second pot on top as a lid. I'm experimenting to see if one works better than the other. :)
@DreamMachine @princesspitstop I’m excited to try this method on my next round of props β˜€οΈ
Check it out! Roots from spider plant grew straight down into the perlite. I swear I only put this in last week
@FamedGymealily Nice set up Kristopher!
@DreamMachine @princesspitstop I might have asked this before, but can you reuse the perlite and bags for a new prop?
@debbiedo Yes ma'am you sure can!!
@debbiedo If by chance your perlite is growing mold on it like some of mine is I just spray it down with peroxide and dry it out and it's fine. You should also probably clean your baggies in between props as well. πŸ˜πŸ‘
@princesspitstop @debbiedo I am going to be sterilizing some perlite for reuse soon, as well! I’m planning on soaking mine in a 1:2 part solution for 30 minutes. (1 part 3% peroxide to 2 parts water)

I’ve read it’s possible with bleach too, but a 1:20 part solution for that. (1 part bleach, 20 parts water) but I’ve never done the bleach before. I’m much more comfortable with hydrogen peroxide. πŸ˜„
@DreamMachine @debbiedo Bleach freaks me out too. ☠️πŸ₯€ I've also read somewhere that you can put it in the oven to sterilize it but I don't know all the details I've never done it.
@princesspitstop @DreamMachine Thank you both! 😍 Saving this post βœ…
@princesspitstop @debbiedo I read that once somewhere about the oven too, but I don’t know about that one. πŸ€” Since perlite is created from heating rock in very hot ovens that could end very badly 🀣 I mean, I’m sure our ovens don’t get close to hot enough, but still… 🍿 πŸ’₯🍿πŸ’₯🍿 😎
@DreamMachine Definitely could be a disaster πŸ˜‚
