Happy Wednesday at #TheWateringHole my lovely plant people 🤍🌿 The last few days have been quite hot, so I am actually so thankful to see that starting tomorrow it looks like we’re due for almost a week of rain 😮💨 🙌 I have not done any laundry, or much else around the house because of the heat. 🥵 I have spent some time checking on my cucumeris mites though 🤓 I just love them.
It’s supposed to be less than 90°F/32°C today, so today I play catch-up. Luckily for me, my adhd brain takes that as a challenge. 3 days of work in a few hours? Challenge accepted!!
For pictures, we’ve got a new tortum leaf, a ridiculously long latifolia vine that I very much need to make a trellis for, some broadmite ICU patients (my poor beauty star 😭 but she’s hanging on! ) and an excellent microscope that attaches to your phone making taking and sharing pictures a piece of cake, and a picture from said microscope. Green circle is my beneficial predatory mite; the N. cucumeris, and red circle is a feeder mite.

Look at me, I’m here early for a change. 🙃 I love the microscope pics!!! So interesting and fun to be able to SEE your predators working! 💪 The tortum is so cool but a little creepy to me when it unfurls. It reminds me of the Rose of Jericho unfolding… don’t get me started there. 😂 I’ve been watching this pup on my snake plant come up for a week or so.. I went to water today and realized whoops, there’s actually TWO pups. The nursery pot is getting kind of misshapen.. lol. I think this may be a repot situation. Happy to report the Black Magic begonia has been taking off since she arrived!! And I was admiring Buffy today, just because.

Black magic looks GREAT! 🙌 I’m obsessed with those leaves. I also just recently had to take my goth begonia out of their clear bin icu because of that air flow problem. I can’t remember if I told you or not but the leaves totally DO glow blue under a flashlight 😱

@Jho @DreamMachine Haha They're both creepy 😂 I have a feeling that the "Fingers" Antherium that's coming back to life is going to be Tortum-esque ⚱️💀 I'm so glad I didn't give up on the dead looking nub before the green leaves started growing from it. Weirdest little guy ever 😜 I'm folding and putting laundry away rn. I didn't fall down the whole time! You would have been proud. ❤️👍

THAT’s what it reminded me of. 😒 Rusty sppppooooonnnnn. That anthurium is looking good!! Yasss necromancy! Anyway, YESSSSSS look at that blue!!!! So pretty! What kind is it again?? I know you mentioned it before but I can’t remember. Yours looks very similar to my (what was sold me as) Zanzibar! I can’t even tell the difference between Zanzibar and Black Mamba though. 🤷♂️ The snake plant is a moonlight that had insufficient light, then sufficient light, then insufficient, and is now bathed in light. 😂 Tricky sucka.

@Jho YESSS Salad fingers!!!! 🤣🤣 I like it when the red water comes out…SHIVER 😂 and, these videos are attached in my head, but not sure if they aired together, but whenever we run out of teaspoons at work and I have to get a different one for someone’s coffee, I always make sure to announce, “my spoon is too big! …I am a banana!”

Forgot to say, the tag that came with mine called it a Black Mamba but I have no idea 🤷♀️ From what I can find from a quick poke around on the interwebs (and therefore, could be not true) is that the spirit of Zanzibar might have a “sage green umbo” (place of leaf attachment to the pétiole…I just looked this up 😅) Does yours? I mean… my “black mamba” also looks like it has a sage green umbo 🤔🤯🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️

@DreamMachine and everyone at #TheWateringHole! Hope everyone is having a great evening. Was hoping to repot my Moonshine snake 🐍 plant, but it still seems to be a little too damp. Not sure if it’s a pup or just the rhizome, but something has grown into the rim of the pot. I have already purchased a new pot. My prayer 🙏 plant is unfurling a new leaf (pic from last night) . My Ruby glow pepperomia broke Sunday and was falling over. Now, I know why. My 1st succulent root rot victim of the Summer. It’s hot and humid and succulents that are not in terracotta pots don’t do well in the Summer in my house. Oh well, now I’ll hav a little more space under the grow light. Guess I’ll take a little walk before dark.
@RefinedSandwort oh no lil buddy! 😂 (Re moonshine rhizome or pup) This happens often to my tradescantia nanouk. I’ve dug out growth that was growing upside down before, so leaves going down into the soil 🥴 and then wondered if it was actually helpful to help, or if I should’ve just let him figure it out 🤷♀️
I hope your walk is nice! Does it get less humid at sundown or does that stay about the same? I feel very lucky sometimes that our summers are usually hot and dry…but then I remember that 9-10 months of the year it’s wet and cool 🤷♀️ It’s a trade off! 😅

@RefinedSandwort That's an interesting little thing in the pot! I only say it's odd because it's so far away from its Mom. In my experience they grow right up next to it when they're coming in...BUT they also have tubers that they also pop up along so maybe that's what it's doing. Your Prayer Plant is looking amazing!! 😍👏 It looks like you might just be a natural when it comes to non succulents the way you are with succulents! 🥰🎉

@princesspitstop I did a search 👀 for sansevieria Jaboa and looked at pictures on several different sites. I do think that is definitely a possibility. Looking at pictures on different sites may help you decide for sure. It appears some of them grow a bit funny and the leaves get broad.
@RefinedSandwort Yeah it's definitely different. There's also a possibility that more than one kind is planted in with it. 🤷♀️

@DreamMachine hmmmm is that red in the middle on all of yours? Maybe that’s the differentiator? I thought mine was more yellow but I guess it could be sage green. 🤷♂️ Does yours seem more flat too? I didn’t think mine was particularly ruffly but yours looks like a flat plane almost from head on. In profile, I can see the ruffles. 🤔 @RefinedSandwort thank you, it looks like we’ll be repotting together!! That is definitely a weird looking little bulb thing. Maybe needs another week or so to make itself known. My Billie is trying to crawl out of his pot too. Wish we were closer - we could make a repotting party. When you say flat, are you talking about the leaf surface? Or the margins? Or something else? Because the leaf surface is pretty flat, like suede almost, but the edges are ruffly. My begonia is also not at 💯 yet after pest treatment and isolation 🥺so several leaves are pretty sad rn.

@DreamMachine haha thanks but I still think they look so similar! Yours could be more black, I suppose? But totally depends on the lighting because sometimes mine looks super black too. Re the leaf surface / textures: yeah I see the ruffly edges but the leaf itself seems very flat (or maybe that’s just the all-consuming inky black absorbing all light - vantablack begonia, can you imagine?!) whereas mine are more wavy throughout. I think this pic will help explain what I mean.

I murdered my first one and haven’t tried another. @princesspitstop what a cool leaf!! @RefinedSandwort oh no! Does the terracotta get too hot? Isn’t it supposed to prevent root rot? Your prayer plant sure is pretty! Not too terribly much going on at my house except expecting a delivery of a philo spiritu sancti and two new hoyas today! Thoughts and prayers appreciated that we don’t RUN OVER this delivery.
