I, like quite a number of #greggers , have some pests in my indoor collection. Broad mites. (Booo hiss!!) They are minuscule, to a lot of people they are microscopic, 1/4 of a millimeter 🤏 small , but I can see them. They look like little dust specks moving around without magnification. They are notoriously hard to contain because of their size. Not only can they come in on a plant, they are so small they can float on a breeze through a window screen. 🦋🐝 How did I find them? I had a few very strange new leaves on two hoyas. They curled in on themselves, lost their shiny luster, appeared grey, and fell off (with my tweezer into a baggie) at a mere touch. I shall post those leaves. You can treat with neem, although it is a lot of labor involved, so this time and with the knowledgeable advice of @MusicalRedmint Susann, I am going PREDATORY MITES. This website DMV Beneficials is amazing. https:// They are a US-based service that offers free consultations to figure out what you’re dealing with and what would be the best predatory bug to help. They also keep your budget in mind. And it seems like prices are not as bad as they used to be! I may be able to contain my pest issue for less than $50 😮💨😮💨. And if you are in another country, I highly encourage you to look around for beneficial suppliers near you 🦋🐞 And if you’re in Oregon or Washington, here is the supplier I will most likely be going with. As I was moving around my plants this morning I was thinking about the satisfying little tasks of plant care that are delightful. No force necessary, once they are brown and shriveled, I just touch them and they fall off in my hands. And I don’t *have* to do this, as they will fall off eventually by themselves, but it brings me joy. 🥰 Another one is when I water, and the saucer fills up but does not overflow, and later when I go to check all the water was sucked back up and the pot is the perfect “well-watered weight.” Do you have any small plant care tasks or activities that give you satisfaction or delight? Since I've heard the serpens can sometimes be difficult to bloom, I couldn't believe my eyes, when I saw some of the myriad peduncles they seem to put out "just in case" regularly were actually developing more. This one is actually the first of several peduncles about to bloom, and I can't believe my fuzzy cutsey luck. Each singular blossom is about the size of a leaf, making the comparatively huge peduncles surrounded by the tiny "snake" heads absolutely magnificent. Like with her daughter, the Mathilde, I'm not a fan of its fragrance, but really, who cares: One of my hoya serpens is in bloom! I will try to capture the whole plant when more peduncles are open, because the size difference between peduncles and leaves is so remarkable, but for now I was scared to move the plant until the blooms are fully open. #hoya #hoyahangout #plantsmakepeoplehappy #happyplants #pedunclewatch 9 13 Comments @MusicalRedmint · 2w Hi, my lovely Greggers. Please send love and strength. Or, if that's not your thing, a bottle of a good single malt will do as well, I'm not picky. Mites. False spider mites. With big hoya collection, after having moved plants around everywhere. And maybe having spotted some signs of virused plants as well (please, please, no ) Need I say more? I could really kick myself for my hybris here. (So maybe forget the whisky, transatlantic kicks from all of you would maybe be more appropriate. I've noticed signs of the infestation for a long time now. But every time, I checked the plants I suspected, (seemingly) diligently. With my more practical magnifying app/glass. Nothing. additionally, I had high trust in my seller, had a comfortably established rest predatory mite population in some pots and am absolutely pedantic about quarantine (which, of course, is basically useless if you don't see/ acknowledge the problem when it presents during that time). Can any of you give a better example for false confidence? I even traded some plants recently, so I even checked those particular ones diligently (I thought). Now I noticed signs of weird dechlorinated leaves spreading, which before I had attributed to a nutrient deficiency. Virus? Nah. Where would that have come from on my absolutely treasured bella PES-03. I've had her for v long, I never share water, no signs of pests, so no plant sap exchange. ... ... Again, feel free to kick me. Anytime. Yesterday I saw signs of those spots on other plants where the deficiency theory makes no sense, got freaked out and finally took out my jewelers loupe. Because logic hasn't failed me completely. if spread of virus, then sap transfer. If sap transfer, then pests (in my case). And if undetected pests then a) pests tiiiiiiny and b) I'm truly fuuuuuu.... well, you know. Fundamentally angry with myself. Gosh, those things are tiny. Undetectable by best magnification my very solid glasses could offer. Even after I knew where to look because I could just make them out with the jewelers loupe. I think part of the reason for my false confidence was my experience with broad mites and some flat mites on a tomato plant a while back. With my glasses on both of those could be spotted with the magnifiers. The tiny bit the broad mites are bigger, made all the difference. And even the flat mite seemed to be a softly bigger species, so that the stark contrasting red dot could be spotted. This time? Nah. And to give me a great start fighting this problem: I planned to get up early to get myself a truckload of predatory mites before work, but I overslept after a sleepless night. Maybe I'll manage tomorrow. Or not. Things have been stressful as is. If you've followed this rant along this far, thanks. I needed to vent. Don't forget to send virtual kicks. I will deceptively attach a picture of a rose because a) hoyas make me sad rn, b) I don't think you would appreciate a huge flat mite picture in your feed c) that rose was gorgeous and d) who cares, I myself can't see it anyway. For me, Greg's been completely without pictures for a while now. Again. #pestcontrol #hoya #hoyahangout #mitesarestupid #sadplant #formitessake 8 30 Comments @planthoe40 · 1w 8 penducles (flowers) I guess she's in her happy place. ❤️🪴🌼 #happyplants #plantsmakepeoplehappy #hoyas #hoyahangout #hoyaheads 8 1 Comments @MusicalRedmint · 2w Flat mites (false spidermite) info posts. I had to bring in 30 plants. So of course I had to order another grow light 🙄. Not too sure about the placement. I feel like just the front ones are getting light. Well, one part; the last part of my soil mix. Still waiting on the hydroguard… ugh… 😩 Why is it taking so long? 🙃🐌🩵🌸 In the meantime, I have finally finished repotting 72 plants and more to go… but I gotta take a little break. Later tonight or tomorrow maybe. 🤔 How’s everyone’s last day of the week before the weekend?? #hoya #hoyahangout #plantsmakepeoplehappy #happyplants #pedunclewatch @MusicalRedmint posted 4d ago 8 30 Hi, my lovely Greggers. Again. #pestcontrol #hoya #hoyahangout #mitesarestupid #sadplant #formitessake @MusicalRedmint posted 2w ago 8 1 8 penducles (flowers) I guess she's in her happy place. ❤️🪴🌼 #happyplants #plantsmakepeoplehappy #hoyas #hoyahangout #hoyaheads @planthoe40 posted 1w ago 7 8 Flat mites (false spidermite) info posts. Under my rant about my current flat mite outbreak @debbiedo suggested, I supply some pictures and description of symptoms to help others spot their own outbreaks sooner (or, like me, spot those signs and ignore them, hence the rant). So here you go. My picture gallery of doom. Also: Should you have questions regarding specific pictures, please keep in mind, I'm flying blind, since at this point, Greg doesn't even show me my own pictures anymore. And if any relevant existing hashtags come to mind (I seem to remember we have some sort of "plantinfo-themoreyouknow" kind of thing), please relay them to me to add to the bunch. #pestcontrol #orchidlovers #hoya #hoyahangout #flatmites @MusicalRedmint posted 2w ago 7 11 Hoya serpens update: overwhelming fragrance, more peduncles open. Enjoy. #hoya #hoyahangout @MusicalRedmint posted 3d ago 6 4 I’ve been doing some research on this type of Hoya I recently received; I’m not as familiar with Hoyas. But this one I’ve been reading says it was previously known as and is no longer considered this type of Hoya? I’m very confused so maybe someone else far beyond my level can explain it? Ha ha 😂 it’s called a ‘Previously Vitellinoides’ my only understanding with previously known as limits to previously known as Prince 👑 the musical artist.. I know I’m really saying age here. 😂😂 #Hoya #HoyaHangout #HoyaHeads #TheThread #TheWateringHole #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict @Idplantthat posted 2w ago 5 3 My new hoya came today....collective plants on Etsy. Yea me and Etsy. 🤣🤣 Shes so pretty 😍 #happyplants #plantsmakepeoplehappy #hoyas #hoyahangout #hoyaheads @planthoe40 posted 2w ago 5 7 Don't mind me, just me lying down beneath my blooming bella. 😍 Other hoyas that have opened since my last post are added as well. The now fully open sp. vietnam, and some especially pretty balls of flouff, another Mini Pixie bloom next to a 1ct coin for scale. And for the guessing game fans among you, a mystery peduncle which will be my absolute moment of pride when it opens. #plantsmakepeoplehappy #hoyahangout #hoyahangout @MusicalRedmint posted 1w ago 4 7 So I worked really hard and combined a lot of my succulents into combined pots to make more room on my succulents table. Gave my 4yr old Jade tree some new dirt. Watered all my succulents. I deserve a treat right? And PBJ plant shop on Etsy sent me a 15% coupon and I didn't want it to expire so I ordered a new plant for all my hard work 🙃 #happyplants #hoyahangout @planthoe40 posted 3w ago 4 13 So some jealous Karen neighbors out where I stay out called the fire marshal and complained about my plants on the balcony I now I have to bring in all my plants. They can't be outside. The fire marshal said it was a fire hazard and somebody might trip. 🤦♀️. My plants have been sitting on that balcony in the summer for 2 years. Never any complaints. I had to bring in 30 plants. So of course I had to order another grow light 🙄. Not too sure about the placement. I feel like just the front ones are getting light. I might have to crawl my old fat butt on top of the fridge to play around with placement of the light. #happyplants #hoyahangout #hoyaheads #plantcorner #plantlove #plantsmakepeoplehappy @planthoe40 posted 2d ago 3 4 Came home from a long day at work to this... I sprayed her down with dead bug brew, neem oil and a (fungicide bc why not?) I just seen a post on here the other day about flat mites that affect hoyas? There is no way I can isolate her. My apartment is too small and I have way too many plants but bc shes so big shes not really in close proximity to many plants. #happyplants #hoyahangout #hoyaheads #hoyas #hoyapubicalyx #plantsmakepeoplehappy @planthoe40 posted 2w ago 2 2 Got these cute little pots at Walmart yesterday before work. Came home last night and planted them. I had them in terracotta. I can't stand hoyas in terracotta. I feel like I'm watering them every 3 days. #happyplants #hoyahangout #hoya #plantsmakepeoplehappy #hoyaheads #plantcorner #plantlove @planthoe40 posted 1w ago See 20 more posts
