About Alocasia Polly Plant
Alocasias, commonly known as Elephant Ears, are some of the most common houseplants although their leaves can reach enormous sizes when grown outdoors! š They typically only support a few leaves at a time (more, when they get more sun!) so don't be concerned if you see an old leaf begin to retire after a new one emerges. They grow out of underground corms which are similar to bulbs, so next time you repot keep an eye out for baby Alocasias! They contain calcium oxalate crystals so be sure to keep them out of reach if you have children or pets! ā ļø

Did I do this right

I may have made a mistake š So if youāve seen some of my recent posts then youāll know that I had some gnat and root rot issues, and my solution was rosemary oil. Which I then mixed into the soil. However, Iād forgotten about basic chemistry. Water + oil ā mixed. Iāve just sat one of the pots that had the oiled soil into water and when I lifted it up then all the water just rang straight out. I then watered from the top a little bit just to see if it would run through or if some would be absorbed, and it didnāt look good⦠However, when I tested the half that I top watered then the deeper soil did seem wet, but then again, the whole point of this was so avoid fungal gnats, not entice them! Am I going to have to repot them all AGAIN?? I canāt deal with that š #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #PestControl #RootRot

Yellowing leaf on alocasia? This darling. My pride and joy. Sheās doing great, sheās pushing out a leaf at rapid speed, and overall looks pretty healthy. However, this one particular leaf is yellowing and has gone all floppy from the stem. Is this the leaf coming to the end of its natural cycle (even though another leaf of the same size looks a-okay) or should I be concerned? Iāve been holding off watering recently since Iāve found out that the soil I was using to pot up my plants has a gnat infestation and was staying perpetually wet (not seeing any gnats so far though and the top of the soil is dry so hopefully things will be alright), and the main body of the soil is still a bit damp. When I got her the roots were PRISTINE so Iām hoping that itās not rot. Any thoughts? Is this something to be concerned aboutconcrned about? #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #AlocasiaAddicts #Alocasia #AlocasiaPolly #NewGrowth #yellowing

What other plant parents say

Unlike some other alocasias this one seems to be pretty drought resistant.
Leaves on my plant grow moderately slowly in my east facing window. My plant prefers to not have direct sunlight and tends to burn easily and mine tends to prefers high humidity and heat.
Would recommend getting a humidity meter and humidifier for these plants!
Mine tends to attract pests, and tends to require me to check on it frequently.
I wipe the leaves down 2x week, normally with neem oil! Iām my experience it helps maintain a pest free plant!

Ughhhhhhhhhhh I killed the first one I had but I think it was dying before I got it anyways my new one got spidermite that I got rid of quickly by just washing the plant. It hasnāt given me any new leaves which is sad. The amount it says to water here doesnāt seem like enough I though they like to be pretty moist I water mine at least once a week and itās not dying so I think thatās a good sign.

This plant has given me such a headache. I overwatered it the first day over a month and a half ago and I swear the soil still is not dry in a terra-cotta pot with drainage and perfectly aerated. I lost a ton of leaves and the surviving gives are thinning out. But all that said it looks like itās putting up a fight. I hope it pulls through. Because it was gorgeous when I got delivered.
