About Phalaenopsis schilleriana
Phalaenopsis orchids get their name from the Greek 'phalaina' meaning moth, as their flowers are thought to resemble moth or butterfly wings! 🦋 Once their flowers have blossomed, they will eventually die but the plant will live one and continue to produce new flower spikes throughout its life. Orchid flowers evolved to attract pollinators and ther unique shape helps keep insects safe while collecting and dispersing pollen! 🐝

How to fertilize Phalaenopsis schilleriana

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Phalaenopsis schilleriana after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

Time for a #PlantStory! This orchid (or what’s left of her!) & I have been through a lot together, & maybe I should’ve given up on her a long time ago… I’ve already replaced her with another flowering size phal schilleriana in spike, with whom I have a much healthier relationship with & who makes me happy! 😘 Still, I decided to give this baby another chance. I threw her pitiful roots & dried out husk of a stem into some water with superthrive & said, “vaya con dios, nena!” Lo & behold! It looks like she still had some life in her after all! She seems to be growing a new leaf & 2 keikis?? So I just placed her in a fishbowl with a cushy bed of sphagnum aka orchid icu. I’m still not sure if she will survive because unfortunately we’ve been through all this before; but I’m excited to see how it all unfolds! Hopefully it won’t be more of the same emotional roller coaster 😭 So, I just wanted to take a minute to wonder at the magic of nature. ✨ Plants are so resilient, so adaptable! This orchid felt itself dying & found ways to propagate itself & pass on its genes. She said, “I will live on through my children!!!” & I think that’s beautiful. That’s my little egomaniac 🥰 #OrchidLovers #OrchidOrg #PlantProblems #OasisMely

I’ve had major issues with this #orchid ever since I took it off it’s wood mount & repotted her. I’ve included a photo timeline of the deterioration. She seemed to have been doing well recently & was able to grow 3 new leaves before the zombification started again a few days ago. My theory is that she doesn’t want to be in sphagnum, & I saw a post from someone saying that this species tends to do poorly with it. I’m planning to repot her ASAP - but does anyone have theories on what is happening here?! It is definitely not due to overwatering because I let her dry aaall the way out before I water & the air in my home is very dry to begin with! #OrchidLovers #OrchidProblems #PhalaenopsisOrchid #PhalaenopsisSchilleriana #OasisMely

Should I water and how much? I am new to owning orchids and still learning. When should orchids be watered when grown in sphagnum moss? The moss feels really dry but roots look good. What should I do?

Droopy orchid 🤔 Anyone’s know why my orchid leaves are droopy ? 😢🤔 Is it normal? #PlantTherapy

When should I water? When should I water my orchid? It is planted in sphagnum moss. This is my first time taking care of a orchid and also using sphagnum moss as a growing medium. It also came in a glass pot. The moss feels dry as well but the roots look really good, I just don’t want to wait to long to water but also don’t want to overwater. Need help😫

So this is my first orchid. We’ve had a couple ups and downs but it’s a hardy one. Anyway, it started a new growth about a month ago and it’s still going, not sure where. Does this need support? What do I do with the new growth?

💨 Humidity
Phalaenopsis schilleriana doesn’t require additional humidity. Plants absorb most water through their root system rather than their leaves, so the best way to provide humidity for your plants is through watering the soil.
🪴 Soil
Phalaenopsis schilleriana does best in well-draining soil. A good soil will contain lots of organic matter such as coco coir as well as perlite or vermiculite to help with drainage. Adding a handful of perlite to regular store-bought potting soil should do the trick!
💩 Fertilizer
Phalaenopsis schilleriana should be repotted after it doubles in size or once a year, whichever comes first. Fresh potting soil has all the nutrients your plant needs, so as long as it’s refreshed yearly, you shouldn’t need to use fertilizer. Remember, plants get their energy from sunlight, not fertilizer!
🌎 Native Region
Phalaenopsis schilleriana is native to Southeast Asia and Australia.
🧐 Troubleshooting
When troubleshooting a sad-looking houseplant, start by checking for signs of distress in its leaves, such as yellowing, browning, or drooping, which can indicate overwatering or nutrient deficiencies.
Inspect the soil moisture; too dry or too wet soil can cause problems.
Ensure the plant is getting the right amount of light, as too much or too little can stress it.
Finally, consider environmental factors like temperature and humidity, and adjust care routines accordingly to revive your plant.
