Hey guys! Many of you know about my obsession with Tradescantia. I'm especially fond of the zebrina species, and have been gradually collecting them in hopes to one day have all 23 (yep, there are 23 different zebrina cultivars!). My most recent acquisition is the newest official zebrina cultivar called 'MaeVerde'. The lady who named it and got it registered also happens to run my favorite Etsy shop, and I got lucky and snagged the very first one she put up for sale! Hello everyone and good evening. Here is the second part of weird things that are attached to bald cypress trees. I have photographed hundreds of these trees through the years. For some reason Greg, in its infinite wisdom, is refusing to post one of my cypress tree photos, even after multiple attempts. Maybe their bot thinks it’s obscene. Good morning everybody. I hope you are well. I’ve been working out in my garden this morning and checking out some locations for a new birdfeeder. While doing that I discovered this plant growing. I checked it out on several apps and it says it is a dwarf pawpaw bush. I looked it up. It is a native to Florida and it grows in one county in Georgia, which is Camden County. In Georgia, it is considered to be critically imperiled 🤔 and only grows a few counties here. Here’s some information if you’re interested. 🧑‍🌾🌼Overview of Asimina pygmaea (dwarf pawpaw) Asimina pygmaea, commonly known as the dwarf pawpaw, is a species within the pawpaw family. While it produces flowers that can attract certain insects, it is not specifically recognized as a dedicated pollinator plant. Pollination Characteristics Flowering and Insect Attraction Flower Production: Asimina pygmaea produces flowers that may attract insects for pollination. Pollination Challenges: Like many pawpaw species, it faces challenges with limited fruit set due to pollination issues. General Pollination Issues in Pawpaws Self-Incompatibility: Many pawpaw species, including Asimina pygmaea, are likely self-incompatible, which means they require cross-pollination from other plants to set fruit effectively. Limited Pollinators: The flowers often attract specific insects, but the overall number of effective pollinators can be low, impacting fruit production. In summary, while Asimina pygmaea can attract some pollinators, it is not primarily classified as a pollinator plant due to its limited fruit set and the challenges it faces in effective pollination. Here is something that, to me, was a bit distressing. I rarely go into a big box nursery. These days I buy most of my plants at local nurseries and propagate the rest. Today I went into the Walmart nursery looking for bricks for my walkway. I noticed a cart in there that was full of hanging basket plants. There was a sign on them stating that they were going to dispose of them today. I asked the guy in the garden section if “they were going give them away or sell them at a discount. I would buy several of them and save them”. The nursery guy said “Walmart does not give anything to anybody and if they sell them , they will sell them at full price”. The garden section/nursery guy was empathetic when he said it.What a waste. I know I could’ve saved most of those plants easily. Walmart would rather throw a whole cart of ,good, plants away rather than mark them down. In my opinion, that’s very spiteful. Turns out my BOGO Monstera had 2 plants in one pot! I went to add a trellis and found 2 stems! I’ve repotted and added their trellises, hopefully they’re happy. Good morning everyone. Light drizzle this morning in West Central Florida. I’d like to know if anybody can help me identify this plant. There’s a huge wall of it that growing on my property. It is growing where a tree once fell. At first, I thought it was an invasive kudzu plant . However, on the Internet it shows that kutzu has smooth leaves. Obviously this plant does not. The plant identification apps I’ve tried call it muscadine grape. I have my doubts about that one. Also muscadine grape is a cultivated grape here in Florida. Hello everyone here is a little morning blog from rural Florida. Yesterday I received a package of 119,000 seeds of Florida native flowering plants. In addition tomorrow I have 5000 Blue Sage Seeds arriving 🪻🪴 🌼🌸. 🦋🐝🦜🧑‍🌾. Some of the seeds I plan on planting in my immediate front yard. I would rather see flowering plants than weeds and grass. After that another, big, bird feeder and I brought a hummingbird feeder at Lowes. Lately I have been seeing Hummingbirds in my front yard. At first I thought they were insects. In rural Florida we,often, have flying insects as big as Hummingbirds. After watching I realized what I was seeing. Not a “dive bomber” bug but a Hummingbird 😲🤩 Wow they are cool to watch. I thought I might, as well feed them too. I am turning my place into a haven of resources for birds, bees and butterflies. All my best always. This is a swallowtail butterfly on an aster plant. There are over 25 species of swallowtail butterflies in Florida and this is one I am not familiar with. I think this is a Spicebush Swallowtail. Hello everyone. I guess you could call us an update on the American beauty Berry plants that I have growing by the hundreds all over my property. I dug a small one up today to put it in a pot. This plant was only about 4 inches high however it had two main roots expanding about 3 feet. I clipped back the root so it would fit in a pot. I never saw a plant this small with the root system that extensive. It’s hard for me to believe that Lowes is selling these plants for $40.
