Here is something that, to me, was a bit distressing. I rarely go into a big box nursery. These days I buy most of my plants at local nurseries and propagate the rest. Today I went into the Walmart nursery looking for bricks for my walkway. I noticed a cart in there that was full of hanging basket plants. There was a sign on them stating that they were going to dispose of them today. I asked the guy in the garden section if “they were going give them away or sell them at a discount. I would buy several of them and save them”. The nursery guy said “Walmart does not give anything to anybody and if they sell them , they will sell them at full price”. The garden section/nursery guy was empathetic when he said it.What a waste. I know I could’ve saved most of those plants easily. Walmart would rather throw a whole cart of ,good, plants away rather than mark them down. In my opinion, that’s very spiteful. That’s another reason to buy your plants at locally owned nurseries or from your counties master gardeners nurseries. 🤬😢 #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #NewGrowth #OutdoorGrowing #TheWateringHole @HFplantoasis @HummingbirdMint @Idplantthat @ILoveMyPlants @Jadedbelle @Jujube @Luckeecharm1 @ModestCoconut13 @Ms.Persnickety @newplantgirlies @Preciousplants1 @princesspitstop @QuickKalopanax @sarah10orio @Shells_Garden @SillyPlantGirl @SizableSuncup20 @smushface @SolaceInSunshine @RefinedSandwort @Ponytailmom @Blhagmaier @BigPetunia80 @BEsucculent @UnbeatenSoybean @TopCoriander6 @stephongreg @ILoveMyPlants @SpyderLily @Ms.Persnickety @CutePolypremum @DreamMachine @ILoveMyPlants @MariansOasis @SillyPlantGirl @Tiffanypickles @4eva @ @NOLAPhoenix @Devsleafypals #Greggang #TheWateringHole
Awh, I would've done the same.. poor plants.. he should've just gave them to you! It's just that they wouldn't even want to sell them or give a discount ...
Home Depot is the same way. Plants are only for sale for a certain period of time, and if they don’t sell- they go in the garbage bin. My husband has worked at HD for 24 years and it still baffles me to this day. IF I go there and see a sad plant- I’ll buy it just because I know what’s going to happen to it. But I do understand somewhat because it’s very hard to get all the plants watered on any schedule- when he was store manager- he would let me come in and I watered every plant, tree- all of it. It’s sad.
Having worked at a home centre back in Canada ages ago, I experienced the same thing. Like all damaged stock and inventory, for the company they can write off the loss. In the warehouse we routinely had to destroy clothing, house goods and plants so they couldn’t be liberated from dumpsters. Definitely not the best system at all.
@SillyPlantGirl , 🫶 thank you for your comment Catherine. One of the saddest things about this whole situation is that the garden center guy told me that most of those plants just needed watering and that they have people come in from the outside who make the decision if the plants are going to get thrown out or not. I know I could’ve saved a lot of them.
I won't touch Walmart with a 10' pole, anymore. Haven't so much as set foot inside one in a LONG time. ... not of my own volition, anyway—I had to go in February to get something for my teacher while we were at work, I BEGGED her to cover for me so I could take the extra time to go to Crest, but she had already told our SpEd principal that I was going 😣😩😩 I felt so dirty just walking through the doors 😑😑😑 I gritted my teeth and told myself it wasn't my choice, nor was it my money they were getting 🤦🏻‍♀️😂
One of the reasons I love Lowe's is the fact that they REGULARLY put plants on clearance, perfectly good ones, too! Just so they can make space for new product.
@Malagueña I totally understand your concerns and sympathize with you, my friend. 🫂 Just on Tuesday I came home with a $7 clearance orchid. I thoroughly inspected it for any signs of pests, damage, or disease but it looked to be in perfect health. The only thing was that the blooms were spent. That kind of stuff just tugs on the heartstrings… No one should be thrown away just because they were done flowering 😭😭 I hope my new orchid, named Nectarine, will be happy enough to bloom again one day, because I can imagine how beautiful they will be. 😱
@DreamMachine , 🫶 I will say thank you for Nectarine for saving this wonderful plant. I am years past my prime and I would not like being thrown out. I’m still doing a lot of work. And I’m sure Nectarine will also do the same thing. 🌻🌹🌸🧑‍🌾
@SillyPlantGirl , wow Catherine. That was fantastic that you did that. 🪴🫶🌱 thank you.
@Malagueña I love buying clearence plants at Lowes, but I hate to think of perfectly good plants being thrown out! 🤷But I do sort of understand their "plant cycle" . I mean they can't keep all the plants, but I do wish there was some way that those of us who'd like to have all the rejects when they are ready to be dumped, could like come and get them!😜
Actually a couple of times before, most of my clearance plants just needed a little trimming, then they were doing great!
