why is it shriveling

the one on the right is very loose and thin unlike the one on the left which is still sturdy and hard, why? #lithopsarmy #lithops
Looks like it's rotting due to overwatering (the black area I circled in the photo). The pot is too big, so what happens after you water is the tiny shallow roots absorb what they need and then are left sitting in excess damp substrate. Depending on your climate and other factors, Lithops only need watered about every month or so. Less often when they're in the process of splitting, during which time you should completely stop watering because they get all the moisture and nutrients they need from the shriveling older leaves. When they're not splitting, I typically wait to water until they start showing the slightest signs of wrinkly on top (only on top, since overwatering can cause them to wrinkle on the sides). I'd also suggest moving to a smaller pot, ideally one made of terracotta, which is porous and helps the soil dry out faster.
I stopped watering them a few months ago because I thought they were splitting (which turns out they're not) I just started giving them water again around last month. (though I cannot promise that my mom didn't secretly water them!) Now I water it per month, each time maybe the amount of a bottle cap (or a little bit more)

but one question, what qualifies as "wrinkles on top" πŸ₯ΉπŸ₯Ή
