Hello everyone 🤗

Just starting today with showing off one of my Makoyana 😊 I am so in love with this plant. It was one of my first "real" plants (for when I started "planting"). I know a lot of Calatheas are real dramas, but this one is a power-plant in my house🪴💪. (I tried giving one to my mom and my sister, as they are growing and multiplying rapidly in my house, but they obviously didn't fall natural for them or their home😅).

So what are your favourite plants, and why?😃

Good morning Veronika @MockingJay !! Or should I say good afternoon to you 😄 I have so much love for the makoyana! One of my heartiest calatheas as well ☺️ It’s between that and both my ctenanthes and my philodendron hederaceums that are my top favs.

I have a special place in my heart for my ctenanthe lubbersiana though, because he taught me about extra floral nectaries and how useful hygrometers can be. When I first got him he was always so sticky, and I kept noticing ants 🐜 on him! I learned, for him, it was a drought response and he was calling the ants to him because he thought he might be under attack from something. 😭 (he didn’t let that stop him from growing a wild amount though). I started watering him more frequently and poof 💨 the ants AND stickiness disappeared. I also now keep a hygrometer on the top of his soil. For my soil and conditions I know that he needs water whenever the hygrometer drops to 60%.

Hope you have a lovely rest of your day!! 🥰🌿
@DreamMachine YES! I have learned so much from my plants 😄 The sticky sweet sap is a real mind blower though 🤯. I have heard about it, but in my experience not very helpful for the plant as my outdoor roses gets aphids and the ants are NO help there😂

Luckily I don't get ants indoor, so I am happily ant-free even if I get some sticky sweet sap😅 (Have you tasted it? It really IS sweet 👀😳).
@MockingJay 😂 I haven’t actually! Since when it was happening the ants put me off, and I’m also “allergic” to sticky 🤣 But I will definitely be tasting a hoya when I get blooms, LOL!!
@MockingJay this is a good topic for #TheWateringHole post! Do you mind if I add tags?
@DreamMachine haha, I was just thinking maybe a fellow #adhdplantlovers would do the same crazy things like tasting your plants🤣 I will probably get poisoned some day🙈

You sure might add some tags😊 I am just afraid I haven't gotten the memo right and do something wrong and annoy people😅
@MockingJay psh! Not at all my dear 🥰 And 💯 I’ve definitely tasted other plants before. I would nibble on clover all the time when I was a kid. And ooh the trumpet flowers! Like a little sweet horn of plenty (but also an ant trap 🤣🤣)
@DreamMachine I love your weirdness Nadia!! 💞🥰
That is such a beautiful plant @MockingJay
Also @DreamMachine I didn't knew these produced a sap to protect themselves that's so cool to know!
@MockingJay Hi Veronica, in my experience that sticky stuff is from mealybugs. If they have just started, I can wipe them off the plant. If they have taken hold, it takes more work, including spraying neem oil a few weeks as well as wiping them off.
@MockingJay Your Makoyana is really beautiful 💗 It’s too hard for me to pick favorites, but I do love this Ctenanthe Setosa that I got from my mom. It wasn’t getting much light where she had it. I found it a sunnier spot and it has taken off! ☀️
@AC73LoveCats I am a stickler for correct spelling, especially names, and I am sorry yours turned out wrong. I did use the “k” when I wrote the post but my phone changed it. Sorry!
@princesspitstop I love your weirdness too Heidi!! 🥰🫶🏼
@AC73LoveCats oh yes, mealybugs do produce large amounts of honeydew 🤮 Veronika and I were talking about extra-floral nectaries, which are SO cool! Not all plants produce them, but when you have no pests and little tiny spots that make sweet sap, it’s like a plants calling card and they’re reaching out for beneficial insects to come help them. Plants are so amazing, it just blows my mind! 🤯
@DreamMachine Wow, 😮 I’ll say! I haven’t had a plant that does that.
@GardenCat43 yes! Not all plants do, but my ctenanthe DEFINITELY did 😂 I just recently learned a lot about them! Philodendrons can get them too, if you ever notice it on your new philo ☺️
Beautiful plant @MockingJay 😍🥰!! I love Calatheas but got very frustrated with their ability to die seemingly overnight 🤪. But if makoyana has been a powerhouse for you and Nadia @DreamMachine , it may be encouraging for me to try Calatheas again. Regarding extra floral nectaries, I had them constantly on a ctenanthe years ago. I wish I’d known it was a cry for help 💦 🐜 🙈. The only other plants I had them on was a rattlesnake Calathea 🐍.
Oh so difficult to pick favorites! 🤫 I’d have to say my Hoyas especially Krimson Queen🫅& Princess 👸, tricolor wayetii , pubicalyx and callistophylla are tops 🏆 Hoyas are all so different in their growth habits, leaves and flowers. And flowers are probably the 🥇reason why. To have something blooming in my house is such a joy! That why I loveove orchids too. But they’re a lot more work to get great blooms. Hoyas are soooo easy! 🥹🤗🤭🫠🫠🫠🫠
@debbiedo that is a gorgeous plant!
@MockingJay those leaves are gorgeous!
@AC73LoveCats yes it might come from bugs too! But I have never had mealybugs on any of my plants 😄 I have the occasional thrips and did have a spider-mite invasion a few years ago🙈 But mostly after learning a ton about plants and pests I have managed to be pretty pest-free😊

And thank you for trying to spell my name correctly 😄 It is a hard one for many obviously 😅
@debbiedo thank you, I love your Ctenanthe Setosa 🤩 Great that it is thriving now 😃 It feels so good when you nail their care😄
Yes I might have like 10 favourites, or 20🤪 But this one was my "starter" so it gets a special place😄
@MariansOasis the Makoyana definitly is one of the hardier ones😊 But I do think the Rattlesnake is supposed to be pretty similar! (Although I haven't had that one myself).
But you can do everything right and still get it wrong, I guess I am lucky they like my house🤪 My mom also did everything right, her Makoyana had beautiful roots, but the leaves just didn't tolerate the environment in her home (it got very dry during winter and is a drafty house), so I took it back. This is actually the one that she got from me😄 It had almost no leaves left 1 year ago😅

I love the blooms on the hoyas🤩 But they just aren't really my plants I think😆 Don't know why. But with limited space I have just prioritized the calatheas😄
What beauties you have! My latest “favorite” (Shhhh, don’t tell my other plants 🪴 😁) is my Alocasia Melo. Such an interesting leaf texture and so far pretty dramatic free.
@RefinedSandwort Thank you Joy 🤗
@CleanTurmeric92 gorgeous alocasia!! 🥰🥰
@MariansOasis thank you Marian😁🪴
@CleanTurmeric92 best to whisper to each one that they are your favourite 👀 just to be safe😅
Alocasias have so gorgeous leaves 🤩
@MockingJay Funny you say that because morning when I go into the kitchen (my hoarder area of all of my plant babies) I tell each one of them how beautiful they are and if they had a good night). My husband thinks I’m crazy but as they say “Happy Plant Wife, Happy Life” 🤣
@CleanTurmeric92 I have heard they really like getting talked to, as they get a tiny CO2 boost from our breath😆 So just tell your husband that it has a purpose😂
@MockingJay #TheWateringHole my favorite plant 🪴 depends on the day or week you ask, as it changes. Today’s favorites: 1. Snake 🐍 plants. These are the ones from my watering hole today. There’s a couple more in my oasis. 2. This Euphorbia Meloformis Variegata just for his cuteness factor.
@RefinedSandwort snakeplants are supercool plants😊 I have some birds-nest snakeplants in oddish-pots😄 They are really cute!

What a cool variegated cactus, and its little horns!🤩
@MockingJay love the pots!
Where to begin! Wow! Your plants are gorgeous, healthy, beautiful, and so striking! That covered patio looks so inviting. I just want to come sit on your porch and listen to a book! Take all that calming energy in! I love it! 🥰 You’ve created such a beautiful space! - I’m with you, tasting the plants is kinda fun sometimes lol 😂
Those are great looking plants
@Idplantthat thank you😄 It really is something sitting there and listening to the bird-songs😄 Or watching the rain🌦 Eating strawberries straight from the railing😋🍓

Although sometimes it just gets completly taken over by plants😅

Good to know there are others out there who do random stuff😂
@MockingJay ah! This looks like heaven! Is that a zucchini or squash plant?
@Idplantthat it is cucumber 😄
@debbiedo that is a BEAUTIFUL setosa Debbie 😱 Oh I love it, so graceful and stylish 💅🏼
@MockingJay ahhhh love your patio!! 😍🥰🤩🌿 There really is nothing quite like picking strawberries 🍓 out of your garden 🤤
What a stunning plant! I’ve never had luck with these but I love them so much. I’ve been thinking of trying again because I have a “humid room” now for my tropicals. Also, not a single person in the watering hole group would be annoyed by a plant post. Were the geekiest, most excited plant people around lol!
As for my favorite plants, I’m a philo enthusiast. Just love them in any way, shape or form. I just got this new philo emerald yesterday while visiting my grandkids- it’s at least 2’ tall and very healthy- for only $20! Couldn’t believe it. I also really love hoyas. 💚🪴
My favorites for today! I have to spread the love around...it seems to change day by day 🤗
@MamaLinne thank you Deb 🤗 What a stunning philo you got!🤩
@GracedStrapwort wow that is a really special calathea🤩 I don't think I have ever seen such pink with green markings in the middle before! Do you know what kind it is? Maybe a very juvenile Cora?🙈 @DreamMachine have you seen this Roseopicta? I have never seen anything with these markings😱 (I need it🤣).
@MamaLinne lol, agree 💯 in fact, I need MORE plant posts 😂 @MockingJay That is really such an awesome find Deb!! And if you ever do venture back into calatheas, Veronika and I both adore our makoyanas, and we’ve found them to be quite the power house 😄
@MockingJay oh yes I have one! I believe it’s the Rosy, but young leaves. At least, mine starts out that way and fades to all pink. I’ll snap a pic of mine when I’m home!
@DreamMachine @MamaLinne sure do😄
@GracedStrapwort @DreamMachine after some quick research I think it actually might be a very juvenile Medallion V2/Mysty 😄 Didn't know they could look like that!
@DreamMachine oh! Didn't know they could have the dark-green in the middle? In my experience they lean more towards white/light green?😱
@DreamMachine my young one looks like this😄 Please take a pic when you get home🤗
@MockingJay that view!!!!
@MockingJay She us a Calathea Roseopicta
@GracedStrapwort yes, but there are many different types and hybrids of Roseopicta 😄 I have, I think, 5 different types😄
@GracedStrapwort I am really excited to see how she grows up with her mature leaves😄 I hope you will give us an update of her growth after a few months 😍
@MockingJay I looked back at my order. She is a Medallion V2, you were right
@GracedStrapwort Cool 🤩 She is a beautiful one indeed😍 She will also get beautiful patterns when she gets a little older🥰
@MockingJay I have had many trials and tribulations with this plant. I purchased her March 2025. She started with 4 leaves, lost all but 1/3 of one leaf. In desperation, I placed her in my glass china cupboard and she slowly came back. It has taken 10 months to get her to what she is today.
@GracedStrapwort oh yes these Roseopictas can be real divas indeed 🙈 I have had trouble with several of my Roseopicta-hybrids, but I think I have got my Rosy going now after 13 months 😅 I also have a lot of mine in a glass-cupboard😄 It increases the humidity to 10% above what I have in the livingroom👌

Yours is looking really good now though! Keep it going!😄
@MockingJay @GracedStrapwort Veronika I love how you hunted it down and turned out entirely accurate 😁👏🏼 That is so awesome!

Here’s mine! She’s a little rough right now. I need to ziplock bag her 😝 And the green is much lighter than I was remembering it as!
@DreamMachine you know how it is with going down the rabbit-hole🤣

I don't blame you for Rosie looking a little rough! I would say that is more normal than looking perfect😂 I have been arguing for some time with mine too🤣 (Repotting is under consideration, but I am terrified 👀).

Thank you for sharing your pic, Nadia😄 There is indeed a difference in the color! Good to know😊
@DreamMachine onto the wish list it goes!
@MockingJay oh yes indeed I do 😂 While all my calatheas are pretty water-loving, have you found the roseopicta’s to be even more so? I’ve started watering them a bit more than usual, and now they’re all putting out tons of new leaves so I’m 🤞🏼 I’ve cracked the code. I put my two larger Dottie’s on a wick system and they seem to be loving it. Also,🤞🏼

And @MamaLinne hehe, it was a Trader Joe’s find! 😁
@DreamMachine maybe the opposite, that the Makoyana seems okay with drier soil 🤔 But also that the Roseopicta's are more susceptible to root rot, which is a BIG problem when they also crave the soil to be moist😅 The white and yellow fusion also like their water, but doesn't have the same problem with high risk of root-rot, I feel😅
My pinstripe is practically standing in water with the pon and self-watering pot.

That being said, I think it is mostly the highly modified Roseopictas that are the worst🤔 I don't have much problem with Marion or Illustris, but I have had root-rot on both Dotties I have tried, the Rosy, Cora and all Silver plate🙈.
@MockingJay oh yes, my makoyana does seem to like drying out more. Part of the reason I love it so much! I might have to try pon for some of mine 🤔
Beautiful, Veronika.
