CP CLUB THURSDAY for September 5th, 2024 Welcome to #cpclubthursday 🌟NOW 180 MEMBERS !🌟 SPECIAL FEATURE: The 3 Sundew Sisters: Tropical Sundews - the Drosera adelae, D. prolifera, and D. schizandra. #3sundewsisters I have extracted the following information on these 3 sundew sisters: Originating from tropical Australian Queensland, Drosera adelae, D. prolifera and D. schizandra, three closely related species, are considered as the 3 Sisters. These species are endemic to far north Queensland. They are unique to the genus in that they are found growing exclusively in rainforest habitat. Peter D'Amato has referred to Drosera adelae, D. prolifera, and D. schizandra as the three sisters from Queensland. The leaves of mature plants are about as different looking as any sisters could be but they are more closely related to each other than they are to any other Drosera. And like any three sisters, each has different growing preferences. But they are united in that juvenile plants do have similar leaves and the flowers are similar as well. The tropical Drosera adelae, D. prolifera, and D. schizandra are about as close as you can get to jungle sundews. There are other Drosera that live in tropical regions and overlap the range of these species such as Drosera burmannii, D. indica, D. banksii, and D. spatulata, but they are not restricted to the wet tropical habitats and are definitely not jungle or rainforest plants. Well, actually, there is now a new sister! Recently a fourth "sister" was discovered and it was named Drosera buubugujin. For anyone really interested, I recommend the following video: https:// Here’s some more info to expand on the above: https:// https:// https:// I have added many posts about the conditions and care of various CPs in previous #cpclubthursday so I recommend people follow the hashtag, may of them also have my own group #seymour so may be easier to find there. Victims of a Cape Sundew Welcome to #cpclubthursday Thursday AUGUST the 29th, 2024 🌟NEARLY 175 MEMBERS !🌟 So just wanted to share some photos of what I saw on some of my sundews today. What I like is how the dewy leaves can capture prey on both sides of the leaf so talk about doubling up your chances of catching a flying insect as has occurred on one leaf I spotted. Then I saw what I thought was an insect sitting on top of a sundew leaf and being cheeky ! But it’s actually stuck there as it couldn’t take off when I went to scare it off ! So I had no problems with taking my time to take a few photos of this captured insect. The leaf has already responded by bending over its prey to aid its digestion. Feast away. @MusicalRedmint Susann, I though you may particular enjoy these photos ! 😃👍🪰⚰️🪦RIP I have added many posts about the conditions and care of various CPs in previous #cpclubthursday so I recommend people follow the hashtag, may of them also have my own group #seymour so may be easier to find there. This past week I got some amazing packages.. #plantmail ! I've wanted a specific Sarracenia for a very long time now (think nearly 2 years), and I decided to finally buy it! It's a Sarracenia x moorei 'Leah Wilkerson'. Whats so special about it? Well, as of last year atleast, it's one of the tallest ever recorded Sarracenia! It was found on a privately owned bog up in Northern Florida. The name leah wilkerson comes from the owner of the bog. The crazy part is that the plant in the wild has a diameter of 6ft and the tallest pitcher was 50in tall!! Even better, it's an x moorei, which is the fancy name for a hybrid between S. Flava and S. Leucophylla. This means that it puts out 2 stunning sets of pitchers : 1 in early season and 1 in late season! I'm so happy that I got this plant .. it's currently close to 2ft tall, but with age it'll get even bigger! It should begin putting out it's late season pitchers here soon, and I'm so excited!! Now for the other plants: •A Sarracenia rubra ssp. gulfensis x leucophylla. It puts out stunning pitchers that look like they are mainly influenced by the leucophylla in the mix. The pitchers are absolutely GORGEOUS! these get pretty tall as well 😄 I've been looking to get some more late season Sarracenia since I mainly have early season ones, so most of these are late season. • A Sarracenia leucophylla "purple lips" x flava var rubricorpora) x 'Opakapaka' , got this plant because it's absolute stunning! Not really much more to say about it. • Last but not least, a Venus Fly Trap "brutal shark", it has tiny spiky triangular teeth and once it matures more it'll get a red ring just below the teeth! Always love venus fly traps 😁 (Pictures went out of order, of course!) #cpclubthursday #carnivorousplants #carnivorousclub #venusflytrap #sarracenia #pitcherplant #merranda #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantaddict #planthaul

LIGHTS, CPs…ACTION 🎦 Welcome to #cpclubthursday Thursday AUGUST the 15th, 2024 🌟OVER 160 MEMBERS !🌟 FEATURE: Lighting needs of CPs “Lighting is one of the most important aspects of growing carnivorous plants. Many species grow best or even require bright sunlight or strong LED growlights. High light species include flytraps, Sarracenia, most sundews, Heliamphora, and Aldrovanda. Species like Pinguicula, Utricularia, and Genlisea can grow well in moderate to high light levels. Nepenthes pitcher plants usually do best in moderate light levels. When assessing light, there are 3 factors: Spectrum, Intensity, and Duration (following link below fora breakdown of these 3 factors)… For many species like flytraps, pygmy sundews, tuberous sundews, Sarracenia, or pretty much anything that isn’t from the equator, changing light hours will induce the proper seasonal cues for these plants. For example, flytraps will go dormant in winter when the photoperiod (hours of light per day) decreases, then flower in spring with lower traps, then send up vertical traps in summer. Pygmy sundews produce gemmae in the fall/winter which is triggered by the photoperiod. Tropical plants like Nepenthes or Heliamphora do not need seasonal changes in light since they come from the tropics” (From https://, see link for more of a breakdown) I have added many posts about the conditions and care of various CPs in previous #cpclubthursday so I recommend people follow the hashtag, may of them also have my own group #seymour so may be easier to find there. I will add some of the more useful lighting links again in the comments below. Add any interesting Carnivorous Plant (CP) facts, photos, or anything CP-related for this week. This past weekend I decided to do some plant related stuff ! :) (If you can't see the photos look at the comments .. I edited the post and they all disappeared for some reason) There was a plant sale down in Tampa, FL and one of the people there was Kenny Coogan. He sells pretty much just carnivorous plants (primarily nepenthes) and is a part of the ICPS (international carnivorous plant society). I saw a Nepenthes × Hookeriana at his table and I couldn't resist getting it. I think it might be my favorite nepenthes that I've got! Seriously, tiny pitchers are so cute 🥹 ! Once I got home, I ran into an issue because I didn't have another small greenhouse and I didn't have enough space in my current one to fit my new nepenthes. So, I decided to turn my leopard geckos old tank (recently upgraded her to a larger tank) into a little greenhouse type thing to hold in humidity. It's working perfectly! I also re-arranged all of my outdoor plants just because I felt like it. I'm loving how they all look right now. You may notice that a lot of my Sarracenia's pitchers have fallen over -- and that's just because we've gotten some super windy and super rainy storms recently. Also, a few of the hybrids I have, have upturned lids which causes rainwater to fill in the pitchers and then that makes the pitchers fall over. I did my best to balance the pitchers on eachother to make it look like they're all upright. Plus, a lot of my younger Sarracenia don't have very strong pitchers yet because they're small still. WELCOME to #CPCLUBTHURSDAY for August the 1st, 2024 #cpclubthursday Welcome to #cpclubthursday Thursday August the 1st, 2024 (the horses’ birthday) 🌟NEARLY 150 MEMBERS - so close (148) !🌟 FEATURE: CP Records and Pings for Fungus Gnats Today I was looking at some interesting records when it comes to Carnivorous Plants (CPs) and here are just a few: * Largest CP is the giant montane picher (Nepenthes rajah) which can contain up to 118.3 fl oz (3.5 litres) of water or 84.5 fl oz of digestive fluids (2.5 litres), thats more than a usual container of milk ! One pitcher was found which was 1 foot 4.1 inches (41 cms) on 26 March 2011. *Venus fly traps can live up to 20 years in the wild (they only occur within 75-mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina) *Largest VFT was recorded as 2.4 inches (6.1 centremetres) across the midrib on & June 2021 from the “Alien” cultivator grown in Colorado Springs, Colorado USA by Heremiah Harris. https:// https:// and here is an article about how good Pings (butterworts) are for fungus gnat infestations: https:// Add any interesting Carnivorous Plant (CP) facts, photos, or anything CP-related for this week.
