About Shingle Plant

The nearly 50 species of plants in the Monstera genus all share some incredible traits, like being world class climbers! 🧗 These plants use aerial roots to grab onto trees as they grow up towards the sun. They've been known to grow more than 60ft/18m tall and many have holes (fenestrations) in the leaves that are believed to help sunlight pass through to lower leaves. The genus name Monstera comes from the Latin word for monstrous/abnormal and is thought to refer to these abnormal leaves!

🌦️ Growing Outdoors
🍂 Yellow Leaves

Yellow leaves aren’t always a reason to panic, and can be a normal part of a plant’s life cycle. Unless brand new leaves are turning yellow or all the leaves change color at once, it’s likely just your plant shedding old leaves.

Overwatering and root rot are the most likely cause of problems in Shingle Plant, since they are sensitive to wet soil. The leaves may also appear to be curling or drooping. Less often, yellow leaves are caused by underwatering, nutrient deficiencies, or pests.

Replace soggy soil with fresh, dry soil and download Greg to make sure your plant never gets overwatered again!

🧐 Troubleshooting

When troubleshooting a sad-looking houseplant, start by checking for signs of distress in its leaves, such as yellowing, browning, or drooping, which can indicate overwatering or nutrient deficiencies.

Inspect the soil moisture; too dry or too wet soil can cause problems.

Ensure the plant is getting the right amount of light, as too much or too little can stress it.

Finally, consider environmental factors like temperature and humidity, and adjust care routines accordingly to revive your plant.

*This plant sits in a bucket on a chair in a west-facing window. It's about one foot from the window. I water it at the roots whenever Greg tells me to water it.*

This is a CRAZY and COOL plant! This is the Monstera Dubia - not the little Hayi. This Monster of a Dubia has more than quadrupled in size since I've gotten it. The little piece of wood that I was using to help it climb has been composted and my husband got a nice cedar fence plank for it. When the leaves are new and the roots are small, I tie the stem to the plank with floral tape for a few weeks. Then I can take it off because the plant connected is looking for new real estate!

I really like the way this plant climbs and wraps around the plank. It is really unique.

This plant grows SO FAST. I got it at the end of June and now (end of November) it has literally grown at least 4.5 feet (I measured)
