Monstera Soil Recipe!

Hi friends!

I’m going to replace the soil I have my monstera in currently. I originally used a standard potting mix and I think my monstera would love an upgrade. I’m going to be using Fox Farm Ocean Forest for the soil with amendments. Through my research, I’ve heard people adding a long list of β€œingredients,” such as sphagnum moss, coco coir, worm castings, etc. Ideally I’d like to keep it fairly simple, perhaps adding perlite and orchid bark (or orchid mix), maybe activated charcoal.

I would love to hear your soil recipes that you’ve had success with! Hearing specific brands would be super helpful as well!

I’m excited to see how Glenn, my monstera, flourishes. I’m also incredibly nervous, as I don’t want to majorly mess it up. #Monstera #MonsteraMob #MonsteraMonday #monsteradeliciosa #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict

Thank you for your help!
I use about half orchid potting mix and 1/4 peat or coco coir and 1/4 perlite but I’m curious to see what everyone else says
Hey Hannah, These plants are a little more sturdy than most others and aren’t too fussy. That said as long as the soil is well draining but also retains a good amount of moisture the monstera will thrive.

Here’s my mix:

Garden Soil
Perlite
Vermiculite
Coco Chips
Orchid bark
Activated charcoal
Worm castings

The only thing I like to keep out of my potting mix is sphagnum moss. It retains too much water and I personally haven’t had great experience with it, atleast not in an Aroid potting mix.

Hope this helps, happy growing!
@Plantoholic thank you! That’s very helpful! Do you eyeball each or use measurements?
I have a few too many plants and haven’t to repot a little too often to try and measure each time I’m making the mix. I mostly just eyeball it till the mix looks chunky and airy. Works great for my aroids.
Also I forgot to add Pumice in fact it’s one of my fav things to mix in my substrate.
@Plantoholic I’ve seen people debating pumice vs perlite so that’s interesting to know you can do both!
I went all in but it's my aroid mix an I have about 7 monsteras an plan to get more so figured if I'm a spend ups to 200 on a plant I better have the right kinda soil for it I have 10 % soil 20%coco coir an chunks 10%leca 10% lava rocks 20 %bark 15 % perlite an 15%worm castings
