What’s one plant you didn’t like before, but now love?

Let’s stir up some conversation? 😳

I’m curious of you all, was there a plant species that you just did not find flattering that you now just absolutely adore? Why didn’t you like them before but now do? 😊

For me there are several 😅 Haworthias, Snakeplants, and Cacti! 🫣 Crazy because they’re some of my favorites now. 🤣🫠

Cacti was more because of a childhood trauma around them, long story short, around age 5/6 my hands ended up covered in hundreds of little tiny spikes. My dad put me to bed with a pillow between my hands because he couldn’t get them all out. 🥲
BUT, it doesn’t take from their beauty, so I got one to get over my fear and now I have 10+ 😅

#GregGang #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #SucculentSquad #PhiloFlock #CactusClique #MonsteraMob #PothosPack #PlantAddict #SnakePlant #AlocasiaAddicts #HoyaHangout
Snake plant for me! But then I got one and absolutely love him. I use grow lights so he grows a little crazy and isn’t just straight up and down so I love seeing all his different leaves. Ever since using the grow light his leaves have changed colors which has been so fun to watch. All this to say I thought snake plants were lame and now I absolutely love mine 😍
@Nataliesplants wow! Those leafs 🤣 your snake plant sure has character 🤗 I had that feeling too 😅 I use to think they were boring and lame, but now, I’m pretty amazed at how resilient they are and how each leaf is so unique 🤗🥰
Oh I love this question and look forward to seeing the responses! I’m not sure if mine but definitely going to think about it…Hoyas come to mind first. I was never totally against them just didn’t get the hype before
snake plant. don’t love them but like them more. i have 2 and want 1 more
@lemrobs 🤣 I feel like that right now about Hoya’s. And I’m scared if I do end up likening them one day because a there’s sooo many 😵‍💫😅
@Natural 😅 I have 2 and want a couple more too! I keep eyeing those moonshine ones, and Whitney’s 👀🤔

Which one is the last one you want? 😀
For me it was Aglaonem. I didn't like the first ones I discovered, but as I got more into plants I found a number of varietals that I enjoy and have added to my collection
@tmbryant37 🫣No, bc now that I searched them, I see some I never seen before that I like 😭
Into the rabbit hole, I may go 🤧
It is snake plants for me also. Growing up my mother had the Mother-in-law’s Tongue which I thought was ugly. I bought one and now I have 9 different varieties of Sansaverias. I just love their beauty and easy care. 🥰
@Pegster oh! Snake plants seem to be a popular un-popular one that becomes popular again 🤣
Your snakes are super cute though! I love Spike! Looks so happy! 🤗
I love Spike. He is a Starfish Sansaveria with five pups. He is happy. I’m glad I put him in a large pot.
Yeah, I went down that rabbit hole myself and now I want exotic ones you can't find 🤣
@PlantingPeace must be braided
@tmbryant37 I know that feeling 🥲 falling in love with a plant before you realize it’s impossible to find and if you do, super expensive. 😮‍💨
@Pegster so many babies! 😯🤗
@Natural ooo! Those do look cool, esp the braided. 😆
I can't get enough of my pencil cactus that isn't even a cactus...and has poison sap... never would have imagined I'd dig it.
Hoyas. I always said they all look the same and I'd never own one. I have several now and they are one of my favorites now. I still think some of them look the same😂
@angelw1975 living on the edge I see 👀🤣
@CoolNoblefir that’s hilarious 😂 I love it!
I would have to say snake plants and cacti… but now I love them both! I have many of each!😅😅😅
I didn't really like any plants because I had a black thumb. I inherited three last month and have since added 5 as I've become slightly obsessed. Still not sure I like the corn plant but love all the others. And I'm loving this app. Everyone is so nice, welcoming, and helpful. Thank you all for that.
@angelw1975 the briar patch one is also cool. All euphorbias are really. It’s weird many look like a cactus but technically aren’t I guess
To be honest when I was still “on the dark side” I didn’t care much for plants in general I had snakes and Golden Pathos but mostly to have some color in the house and because I didn’t kill them regularly. I actually found them quite boring. All they did was just sit there and act as home decor, right.? Now, I’m a full convert! I’m continually amazed by how much you find is going on with each different plant if you pay attention. Now I love it!
@mrstrixiejones and thank you for adding to the positive vibes in the app as well 🤗✨🌿
@TruthfulApricot that is so interesting that you had them for decor before you ever fell in love with them. Did you grow up with them in your house? 😯
My mom never had plants after she had kids because, she didn’t have time to care for them anymore 😔 So I didn’t grow up with plants much, other than the ones outside that were covered in bugs 🤢🥴 then I learned the ones inside aren’t covered in bugs, only on special occasions 🤪 but loving plants so much is starting to get me outside with my outdoor plants more, slowly chipping away at my bug phobias 😝
@FirstCanna yaaaas! We in the same club 🤣🤗🌿✨🌵
@PlantingPeace except for the 🐸🤣🤣🤣
@FirstCanna true 👀 maybe you will have a change of heart one day? 😂
Caltheas!!! I didn't know about them.....then I was scared of them because they have a reputation for drama. Now I have 4 at home 2 at work and one on the way!!! They are so beautiful.....and they move!!! What's better than that?! 🥰🥰
Has the second one flowered for you yet? Mine hasn’t in awhile but it did for the first time earlier this year. It’s already bigger and drooping now. I need a hanging pot for it probably.
@SirLiquorice no 😔 unfortunately, I only got it a month ago. 🥹 But I heard that if your cactus doesn’t get tempatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter, it’s a high chance it won’t flower the next year. Since I live in south Florida, under 40F is a high ask. 😅 so I will see how that ends up next year. 😊 Did you ever hear that before?
@PlantingPeace I only remember a small sad philodendron on a moss pole and a topiary she painted on the wall. 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱My bio-mom on the other hand adores gardening and her hubby just built her a gorgeous greenhouse. Maybe it’s in my genes. Interesting, now that I think of it… My love of plants began about the time I found her. (There’s not always a happy ending when you reunite, but for us it’s been magical!)
@TruthfulApricot oof, I guess it does look like it’s in your genes 🤣 you didn’t choose the plant life, the plant life chose you.
Begonias hahaha my boyfriend’s favorites are begonias, it just took me one begonia to fall in love
I can’t really think of any plants I didn’t like. Some may be just more plain and boring looking to me but not really any I don’t like. I guess higher maintenance plants maybe. Which I why I like cacti and succulents the most. They thrive on neglect and have awesome flowers. Don’t have to worry about killing them if you can’t water them all the time. But even then I do have some higher maintenance ones just not as many. I’ve always kinda liked all plants just preferred certain ones.
What kind of cactus is your first picture! It’s so unique and cool!
@PlantingPeace they do need cold weather to go dormant and rest for the winter. May not need to be below 40. Just leave them outside if you can during the winter. I just put frost blankets up to block freezing wind if we get any. They can handle pretty cold usually but the blankets help prevent scarring. It usually doesn’t get too cold here in San Antonio either. But it does have times where it gets pretty cold. Just try and leave them outside for winter and don’t water nearly as often. Maybe once a month or so and not a full soak like in summer. Just enough to get the roots wet. And only if it isn’t freezing
@ShinyBudew that’s a relief 😅 now you can enjoy them together! 🤗✨
@TruthfulApricot it’s a Mammillaria Gracilis cv Oruga 😀 I love it. I actually got it on Etsy. It’s super cute! And soft 😇 but also spicy 😈 if you grab it the wrong way it will still spike you but for the most part of you’re gentle it’s gentle back. 😆
@PlantingPeace as long as they do get to go dormant for winter then they usually explode with flowers the next year.
@SirLiquorice there’s hope! Thanks for the tip! I will def try and keep them outside for the winter then. It’s my first year with cacti so I’m a total noob right now. 😅 Hopefully all goes well 😁
@PlantingPeace I love it! ❤️
@SirLiquorice that is so exciting! Yours are so beautiful! Like every single one. So. BEAUTIFUL. Hopefully mine do well too 🤗🤞🏼
Still not sure which flowers are my favorite of the cacti
@TruthfulApricot it’s my favorite one tbh 🤫 don’t tell the others 😉
@SirLiquorice yea, with all those gorgeous flowers, I wouldn’t be able to pick either! They all have their own beauty 🥹
@PlantingPeace how cold does it normally get there in winter on average?
@ShinyBudew I just got some begonias.....they are starting to win....🤭😏
@TruthfulApricot yeah there’s some plants I still find more boring. With cacti and succulents and they flowers and spines they get it’s usually the ones I don’t find as boring as some others.
@PlantingPeace I feel the exact same way!
@PlantEsteem omg exciting!!!
@SirLiquorice 😬 uhm, lol, it’s not very consistent I guess is the best way for me to describe it. One day it could be in the 80’s and then the next day there’s a cold front and it could get in the 60’s and then go back to 80’s by the end of the week. It’s usually only cold when there’s a cold front, and maybe the nights are slightly chillier. Our winters don’t really have an “average” 😅 it’s more like, the time of year where some days are cold. 🤔 but the coldest days are usually in the low 50s or 40s at night, and a super cold day would be those temps in the morning. I think. 😅
Begonias! I found them old fashioned and ugly until I started to collect them. I only have three but I love them all!
One I had never ever seen or heard of until earlier this year was a Buddha belly. I fell in love with that weird one. Attracts butterflies and is very low maintenance. Gets huge leaves for a succulent
@HoyaAddict I love the polka dot one! It’s the only one I have right now, and I’m planning on propping it, and possibly plant a line up in a flower bed 😳 and possibly making the Great Wall of polka dots 🤩😆🌿
@SirLiquorice wow! Is that really a succulent? That’s crazy. 😳 but fancy!!!
@Nataliesplants Your sansevieria looks absolutely fantastic, I have 21 sansevierias and they all look at little different. I really like that they are so easy to care for and low maintenance!!
@Ms.Persnickety thank you so much 💕 I just looked at your and they are beautiful too!! Also agreed it’s so nice to have a plant that thrives without a lot of maintenance!
@PlantingPeace thank you 💕!!! This was such a good idea to ask! Also agree
@PlantingPeace yeah they’re fairly drought tolerant for having the big leaves. I water it maybe every 5 or 6 days at most. I saw it in the succulent section at rainbow gardens and it was only $19.99 so I bought it on impulse and it became one of my favorites
@PlantingPeace that sounds like the weather here. Usually hot with occasional cold fronts with freezing temps but usually not for long
@SirLiquorice okay! That sounds like it might just work out then. 😊 in the winter, they still need as much sun as they can get, right?
@PlantingPeace most cacti can handle mid 20’s for short periods of time if the soil is dry. Just use frost blankets to block the wind but you may not even need to. That just helps keep them from scarring. But it sounds like you can always leave them outside and they’ll be fine there. Probably won’t get too cold for you to have to worry. Some like opuntia can handle sun zero temps and still survive. Snow on them won’t even effect them. It got to 9 degrees here and stayed in the low 20’s for a week or so. I never snows here so this was a freak winter storm we got and this one handled the cold just fine. That’s a wild one. They are extremely resilient and tough
@PlantingPeace yeah they’ll be used to getting less sun since it’s winter and they’ll go dormant and stop growing but still try to keep them in the same spot. They seem to do best if they never move locations. Once you find a good sunny spot that they like then you can always keep them there in summer or winter and that’s when they’re the happiest. Like this one for example hasn’t moved since September of last year and look at the growth. It hasn’t stopped flowering since it came out of dormancy. It had one flower last year and now it’s had a couple million or so non stop
@SirLiquorice wow! That’s a survivor if I ever saw one 😳

And okay. That’s a super happy cacti 🥹 so many babies, so many flowers!

Thank you for all your advices, truly. 😊 Peace of mind, but also now if I mess up, it will really be my fault 😅
This is an awesome thread… for me was ZZ plants. I just didn’t get what all the hype was about.. I honestly didn’t like how they looked.. but once I bought my raven zz I fell in love.. I love the leaves and how easy they are to care for.. and now i have 5 different varieties..
Ummm.... @annasea you are bad for my budget.....and I love it!!! Thank you!! 😆😊
@NMazon awh! I keep debating if I should get one or not. They are really nice though! Btw, your Marimo moss balls are super cute!!! And all your little planter friends are adorable 🥰
@PlantingPeace thanks ☺️… if I had to do it again I would most definitely get a zz.. I love the raven.. the leaves have gotten really black.. and the zenzi is so cute and short lol
Monstera Deliciosa, I never understood the hype and thought they were basic until I got one last summer.
@NMazon yea! The raven is the one I was eyeing 👀 🤗 loving the dark leafs ☺️
@EmNEms they are so pretty 🤩🤩🤩 if only I had the space 🥹 yours looks georgeous!! ✨🌿🥰
@Annasea Oh that’s gorgeous! I also find African violets old fashioned. But I guarantee I’ll own one one day 🤣
@PlantingPeace Yes! I want more polka dot varieties 🥹 they’re stunning and more begonia Rex varieties! So many colours and textures 😍
@PlantingPeace Thank you! They are worth making room for, even when it grows outta control 😅
@PlantingPeace you can’t really mess them up. Just remember trying to water and care for them is actually what kills them. They’ll usually let you know when they need water because they’ll look dehydrated. A soil moisture meter is super helpful to ensure the soil is completely dry to the bottom before you water. But even then they may not need water yet. Some you can squish test. If they feel soft a squishy versus hard and full of water then you know it’s time to water.
@EmNEms yeah I ended up really liking monstera also and they aren’t even a cactus. 😂 I somehow have 3 now.
@SirLiquorice That’s incredibly beautiful!
@SirLiquorice They’re so easy to care for and it’s so exciting when they get new large leaves 🍃
@EmNEms yeah i like how monstera act like my cactus do. Water and wait for the soil to completely dry and then water again. And they like being under my grow lights in the closet. But now they’re getting too big to fit
@NMazon i want the raven because of the potential black leaves
@SirLiquorice Oh man going to have to propagate them! That’s their only downfall, they grow so big.
@SirLiquorice yesss, I’ve been super watching my watering since “never over water” is the cactus golden rule 👌🏼✨
@EmNEms yeah there’s a local nursery that has gigantic ones in their greenhouse and outside of it. If mine get that big they won’t fit inside anymore at all. Some of their plants are huge
@Annasea Purple is my favourite colour 🤣 I just KNOW they’re gonna get me haha
For me, it’s Pothos. I had some years ago, because I wanted live plants in my turtle tank, and that’s the only one they couldn’t destroy 😂 Unfortunately, it also ended up really leggy and unattractive. I got some mostly just to have Pothos water, but found that they’re really gorgeous! I have several varieties now, and will likely keep adding more!
@ESylvanus 🤣 I’m surprised it survived turtles though, tough little plants 😄 I also low key got mine because of Pothos Water, but picked my favorite varieties so at least I like them too! 🌿✨
@HoyaAddict if you like purple you need one of these desert roses like this one. They have more locally at heb
TBH I have to say Hoyas, I got one, then 2 and that's all she wrote 😅😂🤣
So many varieties of Hoyas they're such awesome plants 🥰
@Natural I don’t know how I would get mine braided. It would be nice. It’s all over the place sheeesh!
I like so many basic plants. Pothos, tradescantia aloe. I love the ones extra hard to care for Boston ferns and tropicales. I live in the desert so I work hard at keeping them alive.
@Sassylimey Hoyas are starting to be up there with Snake plants 🤣 But I get you, there’s so many, you’re bound to find at least one you like 😅🤗
@JungleLady505 🤣 I think the braiding has to start when it’s young and continue to be maintained. I like yours though! It’s a wild child! 😂😍
@JungleLady505 oooh! I love the Boston ferns! It’s my first year to have one, I’m thinking of getting a second to keep one outside and one inside 😅 to see which does better. My luck is I live in a tropical climate 🥲 so I’ll have it a lot easier than you. KUDOS for trying though! It’s mighty hard for me to keep colder temp plants. I once tried a red maple bonsai. It ended tragic 😭
Monstera😂😂😂 when we went to Hawaii I told my husband : what an ugly plant🤪 I have 8 and now couple more to be delivered . Karma 😂😂😂 life can definitely change in 1 year🤪
@Alkiplants 🤣🤣🤣 that is a big flip!! They are beautiful though! But HUGE 🥲
I am fascinated with them and philodendron and all the big plants… I took everything out of our office and now they are so big and keep being delivered for some reason 😂 we remodeling a bigger room to fit the light needs and space for all my plants 😂😂😂
@Alkiplants ahhh, a room just for plants? Designed for plants with their needs in mind? That’s so Awesome!!! I wish 🥹 maybe one day I’ll follow in your footsteps 🤔 gotta get our own house first 😅
@PlantingPeace it will come! Our house is definitely shaped around my hobbies. I think it is like this because I keep getting them and there is no choice for the others😂
@SirLiquorice What is that, tell me more! I love purple and this flower is amazing! I haven’t seen this kind of plant before.
@PlantingPeace all plants green and colorful are my faves. My relationship with plants began during lockdown. It helped me out of my depression. They made me so happy, especially when I was able to save many of them, when in the past, I would just discard when their foliage and blooms dried up and fell off. Through Greg, I learned I could restore them back to life! I don’t have a green thumb but my plants are all thriving. It’s been 3 years now.
@HappyPlantBFF 🥹 that’s a really beautiful story. 😀 plants sure have a way of grounding some of us. 🥰
@PlantingPeace I would say you definitely have 2 green thumbs, Brigitte!
@HappyPlantBFF That last was meant for Cristina, but also applies to Brigitte. I sometimes get confused about which username is which when responding.
@AC73LoveCats 🤣🤣🤣 it’s no worries. @HappyPlantBFF has more like 4 green thumbs 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🌱🌱🌱🌱😅🤗
@PlantingPeace I like this question. There are a lot of really thoughtful 🤔 replies. As with some others, there are really no plants I don’t like, just some I prefer and don’t prefer. I was never interested in cacti and those that look like cacti. I prefer plants that I run into that just happen to appear interesting to me in some way, and those that are unusual and not commonly seen. Also I am not interested in buying large plants. I like the relatively little ones and enjoy the challenge of helping them grow over time. So for instance I have a Stephania Erecta, a potted Devils Tongue I raised from a corm, a small Swiss cheese plant, a tiny Alocasia African Mask, a small Silver Squill, a tiny Pepperomia Ferryrae, a vining small Hoya Kerrii. I have 2 new tiny ponytail palms that are somewhat larger than Austin my huge 45 year old one was when I bought him. As I write I realize I have not put all of my newer ones in my Oasis and need to do so. I am interested in why people pick the plants they do.
@AC73LoveCats omg! I also like raising little ones, mostly because I don’t have space for big ones. It’s nice to see them grow in your care too. I really want a rubber tree, but I want a small one 🤣 I know it will grow but I just want it small for now because I can’t make a space for a big one atm. 🤗 that is also a fun question. You should make a post asking why ppl pick the plants they do. I’m sure a lot will because they find them pretty, but surely there are some who have nostalgia or allergy reasons? 😯 or other things I can’t think of. 🤔😅🌿✨
@PlantingPeace Yes, that is a good idea. Also I like a related question, how did you get interested in plants to begin with? We are leaving for Florida tomorrow to see our grandkids so will probably do that when we get back, unless I have time while there. …. I also don’t have room for too many big ones, inside, anyway. For me, seeing them grow from being tiny is the challenge and fun of raising plants.
Tradescantia for me … I bought one and now I have 4 and counting on my wishlist 🙈
@Swellsquid768 those are interesting plants 😅 I do see some ppl struggling with them. 🤔 are they easy for you? 😯
@AC73LoveCats that is a desert rose. It’s a desert plant or drought tolerant type succulent. Slow growing and gets huge eventually it takes forever to get that big. https://www.google.com/search?q=desert+rose+in+natural+habitat&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS1007US1007&oq=desert+rose+in+habi&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i22i30l2j0i390l3.6913j1j4&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8
@AC73LoveCats https://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Adenium+obesum
@AC73LoveCats they sell them at HEB grocery stores here and in just about every nursery here. They don’t need water very often and survive long periods without. Mine also fell about two stories almost when a cat knocked it over so it took awhile for it to grow the leaves back and then it finally flowered. They come in many different flower colors so you have to look for the purple. I didn’t know what it was and I just guessed and grabbed one. I had know idea it would be that cool. It started black and red and turned purple as the days passed by.
@AC73LoveCats then turned dark purple at the end
@SirLiquorice Thank you for all the info! It looks like, in your pic, that it has hardly any leaves and is just one big flower! The stem reminds me of ponytail palms. I live in Ohio so it would just be outside in the summer. But my tropical plants do well inside while waiting. I’ve never seen a desert rose in any stores here.
@AC73LoveCats I just read your summary in your oasis when going to see your plants and noticed you have a 45 year old ponytail palm you said!?!? That’s so cool. I want to see pics of that one!
@AC73LoveCats you can order them from east Austin succulents or www.planetdesert.com should have desert roses
@AC73LoveCats https://planetdesert.com/products/adenium-obesum-shaaba-1
@AC73LoveCats neither of these are the purple. https://planetdesert.com/products/adenium-obesum-jk. But still nice
@AC73LoveCats @EAS may be able to help you find a purple desert rose. They have a great selection of plants.
I will be adding my new plants to my oasis soon; tomorrow we are leaving for Florida to see our grandchildren for 2 weeks so it may be after that, but if I can I will do it sooner. I can send you some of the ponytail palm now. These are from its summer outside. Plus my husband and the ramp he built to get it in and out of the house.
@AC73LoveCats they look so cool when old
@SirLiquorice Thank you so much for all the info! Yes, the desert rose does look cool when old. It is gorgeous! I tried to raise a crepe myrtle I got in Florida last summer but failed miserably…..was thinking of trying again cause I saw an article on how to raise a potted one in Ohio and I did a few things wrong, I discovered. If I got a desert rose I would have to check such an article first!
@AC73LoveCats wow that ponytail palm is so cool. Care for the desert rose is probably very similar
