Is this new shoot going to die off? #AlocasiaSilverDragon...
Just got this alocasia silver dragon last week. The next day I already saw signs of the new shoot browning. roots are healthy, leaves took a little hit from shipping but not to bad. Just watered her for the first time since buying her. Overall a healthy alocasiaâĶ. Except for this new shoot. Will I lose it ?
4ft to light, indirect
4â pot with drainage
Last watered 1 year ago
@TheConservator I just watered it so itâs obviously gonna be wet.
I donât water it until the soil is 70% dry and then soak.

@Valfalfa my pleasure my honor my duty!!ðąðĪĐðĨđâĻ calling all Alo whispers!! Will you lend a hand to our friend please ðĪĐðąâĻ @RealSimpleMama @princesspitstop @Hoyaobsessed @DrGreen @TheOddAsity @stephonicle @UltraKoreanfir @WelsomeRhodotus @JenniB81 @elisenavidad @SageTreeheather
@RealSimpleMama oh my GOSH!! I learned something todayðĪĐðąð thank you SO MUCH SARAH!!! I didnât know they need to go dormant !
@RealSimpleMama very informative ! Thank you Sarah
My Alo Var Frydek has been throwing a fit since the cold weather hit!! So I wouldn't worry overly.
Alos are hard to please but actually really quite hardy, they can stand being chopped back to nothing if a disaster occurs and will usually still come back, so that wee baby leaf is done for I'm afraid, but give her some time... She'll find a way to shoot again it just may take her a wee while! (Especially at this time of year!) Xx

@princesspitstop oh no!!! ðĨđðą I think of you as queen of the land and plants! Iâm so sorry Heidi :,) but I will send you all the alos if you want!ðĪĐðąðĨđ
@Prentyce Maybe one day I'll give it another shot. Really, I only tried once with an Alocasia Jacklyn rescue. She had 1 partially green leaf. I gave her some water and she pushed out 2 little but gorgeous leaves got my hopes up, then kealed over ð

Hello dear plant friends! âĪïļð
I see this post just about every time while scrolling, so felt it's time again to share my experience of having Prince, my beautiful Silver Dragon ð for around 10 months.
He arrived generally in good shape with a total of 6 leaves but 2 were damaged in shipping and had to be cut off. I wish I had kept a photo of his gradual process of decline within a month. One-by-one, the leaves turned a disgusting yellowish, brownish, spotted mess and I was frantic to find the problem/solution.
One day, after so much despair and heartache (and a tad of anger) I chopped off those disgusting leaves, which left only one small healthy leaf, and left Prince alone.
To my surprise, within 6 weeks, several corms pushed out new leaves!
So, the problem with him was ME!
I learned:
Silver Dragons ð absolutely will not tolerate being fused over. Just treat when necessary, put them back in their regular spot and do not move until next treatment. You are allowed to say hello daily, but absolutely no touching!
When I say treatment, I mean watering... They do not like to dry out but remain a little moist. Water when the first 2 inches of topsoil are dry. ð
Top water using distilled water mixed with organic liquid fertilizer containing worm castings. They are heavy feeders. Prince has not gone dormant. Add a little hydrogen peroxide to the mix to help aerate the soil. I use a coco noir mix.
Make sure to drain completely and NEVER mist, get wet, or touch their leaves. They absolutely hate that! ð
I've read from other Greggers that Silvers like to live in terra cotta pots. Having not known that, he lives in a plastic pot and has accepted it.
So dear planty friends, I went from ðąð§ðĪðĪŽ to ðâĢïļððĪ and it's a lovely feeling. Hang in there. Your Silver may turn out to become one of your favorites!

OMG Prentyce!
You answered just as I was editing my comment! That was only a couple of seconds ago.
An early good morning to you, sweet lady.
I think you're maybe feeding your awesome puppy, getting coffee, or checking out the plant kiddos?
Have a lovely Sunday!
Mostly everything I learn is through our Greggers community and through my own experience with trial and error. Lol ð

No worries sweet pea ð
We're all in the same boat.
Our planties live in different environments, our homes, and what works for most might not work for all!
Lol
I just edited the post again...lol ð
What's wrong with me??? Oh! ðģ Haven't had coffee yet... that's why I keep having to go back and edit ðĨī

@CutePolypremum Good morning friend ð beautiful story! I absolutely love Alocasias... however I have my own personal horror story with them. ð Your experience with your silver dragon makes me want to try again...kinda lol
@CutePolypremum I'm not sure what you're asking. If you wanted to comment inside someone else's post and you didn't put an @ then it wouldn't notify anyone that you posted except the person who originally posted the post or question. Like in this case if you left all of that off it would only let @Valfalfa know that you posted. BTW Hi Valerie! Welcome ðĪ your Silver Dragon is beautiful âĪïļ If you wanted to post your own, under the Community tab the first button, top right that looks like a square and a pencil, click on it and choose Post or Question. You don't have to @ anyone in your own post. But if you leave out # then it reduces how many people will see your post. If you just wanted to contact a certain group of people like only the ones who have joined the #alocasiasilverdragon group then your post would be seen by them. If it's general I usually put #happyplants and #plantaddict because they have the most members and your post will reach more people. Sorry, that was kinda wordy. Lol is that what you were asking?
@princesspitstop
Hi Heidi! ðð
Thanks so much for all of your good information, as usual.
Yup...it even sounds complicated to me, what I asked. Lol
Am actually quite ill today ( although the 2 giant cups of coffee I just drank took away the headache) and maybe that's another reason why my brain isn't functioning at it's best level? Lol ð
So, dear plant friend, I'm going to screenshoot your answer and investigate it, and my own question, when feeling better.
I actually have screenshot quite a few of your and Seymour, Shannon's responses, and a few other Greg peeps as well. So, I've created another research project...how to organize those on Google photos ðĪŠðĪŊðĩ
I have the distinct feeling there's at least one gem of useful information in your response! âĻð
Enjoy your day ðð

@CutePolypremum I tried to cover all bases ð I'm sorry you're not feeling your best today. I woke with a headache this morning as well but we only had Aleve in the house. Getting dressed now to make a Walmart trip for some ibuprofen. âĪïļ

I forgot to add to my long Silver Dragon ð answer...
It's great if you top water only with distilled water every once on a while so that your plant can be flushed. Allow to drip dry...
Also, the hydrogen peroxide can be used with every 4th watering or so...not each time you water.
It seems I have a touch of covid-type flu and our internet has been out since yesterday afternoon.
Am not sure if this reaches you guys!
Emojis aren't available ðĒ

Hoping you're feeling a-ok today!
One of your suggestions worked! I just tried it out on my latest comment.
Whoopee ð! Thanks...
Brain still not functioning well enough to tackle the rest yet.

@CutePolypremum Ok I get what you were asking! If you want your message to reach everyone within this post you would have to @ everyone in this post. To get those names type @ and a list will come up. Click on each person individually and it will add them to your comment. Then it will notify every one of them that you posted. ð To edit your comment click the 3 dots next to your comment and then click on edit comment. There you can add @ people. In your last post it only notified the original poster. I know it sounds like a lot but you'll get it. Fell free to ask me 2 or 3 times and I will be more than happy to explain it again. Lol I'm patient. The only way I personally learn is by doing it over and over. ðĪð
@princesspitstop
Hi my techie friend!
I don't get it???
Internet is out...I can't get tv, Chrome, email, etc. but can get some apps like Greg and Amazon.
I don't understand why I still can use Greg and Amazon?
But, when I'm using Greg right now, only automated emojis appear, and I cannot select...
Am soooooo grateful for being able to still have Greg...I's all such a mystery to me! Lol ð

@CutePolypremum I think your home internet is out but your phone sim data still works.
@CutePolypremum are you on your phone or a laptop? Either way power down and restart and see if that helps. ð That's the first thing tech support would tell you to do. Let me know if that helps.

Hi ladies!
Thanks! Phone still working!
Found out the modem is dead and they're going to replace it tomorrow.
We are so spoiled! My son reminded me of the days when we only had the phone book and maps!
Anyway...Heidi. I already know how to do all of that. Learned some of it before from you and with my own exploration.
Here's what's left...when after tapping "community", how can I pull up a person @ and/or a group # without having to create a question or post? I think it's called DM?
Secondly, how do I find a group if I don't know the name of it? For example, I'd love to join every alocasia group there is on Greg.
Am I making any sense? Lol ð
I added your email address to my contacts, just in case!
Mine is solomonjoan62@gmail.com
Thanks, lovely friends ð

@CutePolypremum Yes you're totally making sense!! ð I wasn't getting it because there's no way to directly message anyone or join a group without clicking on a hashtag in someone else's post or by going to your Oasis where you already have a plant listed. Clicking on a plant then scroll down to until you see community and you'll see a hashtag of the plant you're under. Click directly on it and join from there. You can always make a post with hashtags then delete it once you're done. ðĪ·ââïļ Maybe this problem needs to be addressed or sent in as a suggestion. I've already filled one out and don't think I can do it twice but here's where you can make suggestions. https://form.typeform.com/to/VZJ60YMu

Thanks so much again, Heidi!
I can receive emails, I ðĪ think. Tablet is non-functional until they bring the new modem and I get back on WiFi = the internet.
I'm so grateful for your patience ððŧ ð
There are two comments from today that I simply must archive!!!!
I'm sorry to say that we are
basically abandoned by the Greg Team, staff.
I've sent numerous emails with suggestions, but they all fall on deaf ears (eyes). They just always reply with the standardwords: "We are working on it."
They want us to rely on each other to figure out how to technically and practically use the Greg app.
It's the same thing, over and over...
It has taken me almost a year to pull information from all of our community and I still have so much to learn and figure out.
But...having said all that, I love Greg and am so appreciative that it's available to us!

@CutePolypremum I'm thankful for you and all of the other wonderful people I've met through the app. Anytime you have questions if I know the answer I'm happy to help. ð
