LECA Questions!
Hey, all! Iβm finally trying LECA for the first time! I have already rinsed it until the water ran clear, and itβs been soaking for about 36 hours.
Itβs my understanding that the way to use it is to put the plant (with nice, clean roots!) into a nursery pot with the saturated LECA, and then put the nursery pot into a cache pot with water in it. I also know to use a fertilizer (Iβm starting at 1/4 strength) since LECA doesnβt have nutrients. But is that all correct? And I have so many other questions!
- [ ] How much water should I use? Should it touch the roots, or no?
- [ ] How often should I add/change the water?
- [ ] Will the clay balls on the top dry out from not being in contact with the water?
- [ ] What else do I need to know?
I tried watching some YouTube tutorials, but some of them had conflicting info and I really donβt have the attention span to watch a whole video when I only need bullet points. β¨ADHD girlies say hey!β¨ π€£π€£ Iβve put my #AlocasiaDragonScale and a #PaintersPalette #Anthurium into the LECA so far, but I want to be sure I know what Iβm doing before I go ham π
So, Iβm hoping to hear from anyone and everyone with LECA experience whoβd like to help me out! Thank you in advance! ππΏ

@BabeVila hereβs a good Reddit bullet points post! https://www.reddit.com/r/SemiHydro/s/Y81iMVajf7
Sounds like you got it. I fill my cache pot so the water is just below the roots. Depending on the plant I may use even less water. As long as ur leca is in contact with water it should absorb it so they donβt dry. How often youβll need to fill the pot depends on how thirsty the plant you have in it, your environment and if itβs growing season (spring-summer). When I started I checked my pots every couple days until I got a gauge on how much the plant is using. Then you will fall into a rhythm. But remember that in the fall when days are shorter plants use less water and can go longer between waters. Donβt want root rot from overwatering.
