I got free tradescantia from Under the Sun 🤩🤩 And not just piddly little pieces, either—big LONG trailing pieces that had broken off of potted plants! I said "Hey, if I find strays that aren't attached to anything" and before I could finish the question the guy said "Sounds like freebies for propagation to me" 😂😂 SCORE
I also bought a couple (for $2 each, definitely do NOT feel guilty about that LMAO) Going to pot the ones I purchased and take them to work to put up on a shelf in my classroom and prop these pieces in water for a couple weeks.

@Succulent_Soul UtS is a fairly local company, there are only a few locations, all owned by the same family, as far as I know, and they're only in Oklahoma. They have always been really great about answering questions whenever they can, and they have AMAZING mid- to end of season sales on their outdoor plants. I got my fiancé two passion vines, a Betty Tam (Lavender Falls Wisteria), and an entire flat of English Ivy for our anniversary last month... for about $60. And they're always so friendly and personable. My only complaint is that their house plants tend to be a little on the pricy side and they do NOT go on sale. At least, they're not supposed to. I got the two tradescantia that I bought this evening for 50% off on their Summer Sales Event, but I'm not sure if they were really on sale or if the guy just did that for me because he appreciates my profession 😂😂 (I have absolutely zero shame, I will ask for my teacher discount EVERYWHERE 🤣🤣🤣🤣)
@SpyderLily Beautiful!! That’s how I got my nanouk ☺️ But just so you know, and tagging others here too, @HolyLacealoe @SillyPlantGirl @Succulent_Soul @Alucen (sorry if you all know this already): propping in water (or any kind of propping; perlite, pumice etc) is *completely unnecessary* for tradescantia. 🙌 They are SUPER rooters, and in fact it’s one of the reasons they are so good at spreading out over large patches of ground. If any part of the stem touches the ground or breaks off and falls to ground, they can root in literal days. A lot of people will have them trailing, but their stems are quite weak, and will break off easily, because it goes against their natural growth habit of matting along the ground. Any time a piece breaks off you can literally poke a hole in the substrate and pop them in. No callousing over, nothing!
However, I do understand if you want to water prop to show the kids how the roots grow 😁…it won’t hurt them to be in the water for a short amount of time , but if the idea is to get a big pot of it as quickly as you can, you can skip that step!
And if ANY of you have any tradescantia questions that that you want an expert’s advice on, Steph @stephongreg knows more about tradescantia than anyone I know of, 🙇♀️ and plus, is very good at identifying. 🥰

@DreamMachine oh Lottie I sure know about that! My parents had bought one when they moved to Florida. I went for a visit a month later and the beautiful pot they put it in next to the sidewalk- BOOM!! It went everywhere!!! Up the house wall, up and down both ides of the sidewalk. It was crazy!
@DreamMachine you can tag me anytime. I’m always learning!
@DreamMachine Yes, my Purple Queen had a few pieces break off and I stuck them back in the dirt just for kicks and giggles and they kept right on blooming 😂😂😂
@DreamMachine You nailed my intention BTW 😂😘 I'm going to document the prop progress every day and then show the kids in a couple of weeks
@SillyPlantGirl hahaha, oh how I do wish I could grow it outdoors like that where I am! I would love to see that growing up the side of the house 😂 Our winters are pretty mild in the PNW, but from Sep/Oct through June is entirely too wet for their likes 😔
@SpyderLily May we all learn from their resiliency 😅 Love that they didn’t even stop blooming! And The rooting experiment should be fun 🥰
