How to fertilize Charlie's Stromanthe

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Charlie's Stromanthe after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

Do you water on sunless days? Ever since I got this plant in the mail it’s struggled. It came bare root. I planted it in soil. Terracotta. Then recently sphagnum for a few days and now a mix of soil & sphagnum in a 4” plastic pot. But watering - on days when it’s stormy & no sun do you still maintain your watering schedule? #CalatheaCrew #calatheacharlie #GregGang #plantdoctor

So far my new Stromanthe is doing great. Any tips?

Brown: not the extra color I want to see on my Tricolor I understand these babes like humidity and moist soil, so I thought she was drying out. But watering and misting more doesn’t seem to have fixed the issue. She sprouted a new leaf, but the brown is getting worse. Any ideas? #Tricolor #stromantheTricolor #Stromanthe #TriostarStromanthe #brownleaves #SOS

Leaves curling up Very new here and trying to grow a green thumb. My prayer plant is not looking so hot. I have only had it a couple weeks. I'm guessing either too much sun or not enough water. What do you think? Thanks! #newplantmom

Leaves turning brown Help! My tricolors leaves are curling and looking brown despite following the watering schedule Greg suggests. Any ideas?

Brown tips giving me the blues I fertilized this babe with diluted 10-10-10 and did a neem oil treatment last week. He didn’t seem to love it as some of the tips have gone brown. Watering weeklyish and he’s basically under a humidifier. It’s been unusually hot here- but with all those factors im not sure what I did!

I might have freaked out and made things worse. My Stromanthie was doing great for a while, I guess maybe a month, being very cheeky bullying her monstera adansonii brother, but suddenly a bunch of her leaves started withering at the edges, like a lot. I panicked and switched her to hydro, since more of my plants were hydro and I thought it would fix a dryness problem. It... perhaps expectedly, made things worse. So I potted it back up, and it dropped a few more leaves. I just set up this tray setup since the humidity was dropping back down, but I don't know yet if she'll even like it. Is it even a dryness problem? The pot is a self-watering planter, so while I hadn't been watering her very much at all I did regularly check her reservoir and she wasn't a fast drinker, until her leaves suddenly yellowed and withered. I know overwatering is also a rookie mistake but got scared by online information stressing how humid the triostar has to be...
Charlie's Stromanthe prefers for the soil to dry out between waterings and should be watered regularly. Use our water calculator to personalize watering recommendations to your environment or download Greg for more advanced recommendations for all of your plants.

💨 Humidity
Charlie's Stromanthe prefers dry environments. Providing extra humidity or misting your plant allows water to linger on leaves, which can create the perfect environment for harmful types of fungi.
🪴 Soil
Charlie's Stromanthe does best in well-draining soil. A good soil will contain lots of organic matter such as coco coir as well as perlite or vermiculite to help with drainage. Adding a handful of perlite to regular store-bought potting soil should do the trick!
💩 Fertilizer
Charlie's Stromanthe is a fast growing plant and may deplete the nutrients in its soil over time. Replenish them with a gentle organic fertilizer or compost every 1-2 months depending on your location and season. Fertilize more often during the growing season and in warmer and brighter climates.
❄️ Dormancy
It’s common for Charlie's Stromanthe to go dormant in the wintertime and you may notice their growth slow down. Waterings should be spaced out more during this time.
🌎 Native Region
Charlie's Stromanthe is native to the Tropical Americas.
🧐 Troubleshooting
When troubleshooting a sad-looking houseplant, start by checking for signs of distress in its leaves, such as yellowing, browning, or drooping, which can indicate overwatering or nutrient deficiencies.
Inspect the soil moisture; too dry or too wet soil can cause problems.
Ensure the plant is getting the right amount of light, as too much or too little can stress it.
Finally, consider environmental factors like temperature and humidity, and adjust care routines accordingly to revive your plant.
