WHATāS MY NAME? Join #HelpMeNameMyPlant Can we get more than 80 members of #HelpMeNameMyPlant ? I hope so !!! Another #plantnamesunday for me as I demand #HelpMeNameMyPlant (over 75 members!) as created by @Corinne. So hereās a new plant with another Nepenthes (bought at the same time as the Nepenthes Gothica recently seeking a name) This Nepenthes is known as a Red Leopard (hybrid of ventricosa x maxima) and it has some lovely coloring so I am open to all suggestions although I do like the idea of a red leopard so leopards or spotted cats might be a nice idea. So bring out your cat spritiual animal! Know any good leopard names? So over to you all with the best answer going to the first answer which leads to the eventual name chosen. Thanks for finding some great names for my plants already. And more needing names too⦠Wow, we are also nearly reaching 155 #cpclubthursday members so can we make 155 members before this Thursdayās Carniverous Plants Club? #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #PLANTMAFIA #PlantTherapy #GrowLights #theamigos #Seymour #HelpMeNameMyPlant #GregGang #Greggers #Nepenthes #cpclubthursday

WELCOME to #CPCLUBTHURSDAY for August the 1st, 2024 #cpclubthursday Welcome to #cpclubthursday Thursday August the 1st, 2024 (the horsesā birthday) šNEARLY 150 MEMBERS - so close (148) !š FEATURE: CP Records and Pings for Fungus Gnats Today I was looking at some interesting records when it comes to Carnivorous Plants (CPs) and here are just a few: * Largest CP is the giant montane picher (Nepenthes rajah) which can contain up to 118.3 fl oz (3.5 litres) of water or 84.5 fl oz of digestive fluids (2.5 litres), thats more than a usual container of milk ! One pitcher was found which was 1 foot 4.1 inches (41 cms) on 26 March 2011. *Venus fly traps can live up to 20 years in the wild (they only occur within 75-mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina) *Largest VFT was recorded as 2.4 inches (6.1 centremetres) across the midrib on & June 2021 from the āAlienā cultivator grown in Colorado Springs, Colorado USA by Heremiah Harris. https:// https:// and here is an article about how good Pings (butterworts) are for fungus gnat infestations: https:// Add any interesting Carnivorous Plant (CP) facts, photos, or anything CP-related for this week. FEED ME, SEYMOUR ! #cpclubthursday Welcome to CP Club Thursday July 25, 2024. āš¦140+ MEMEBERSš¦ā So I often get asked about feeding CPs and I just want to firstly summarize a few things: 1. CPs can survive without feeding! 2. CPs rely mostly and heavily on photosynthesis for their main energy source, NOT their caught food! Over 70% of their āfoodā is from photosynthesis hence why light and water are so important to them 3. VFTs are misnamed as they principally eat ground-bound pray like ants š and NOT flies! 4. VFT have trigger hairs that need to be set off (see previous #cpclubthursday post) but thatās just the initial setting off the trap. They then need further movement or āmassagingā to cause further construction and activate their digestive juices 5. Especially for VFTs, live prey is best. 6. Pet Shops often have live insects available in their live reptile š¦ sections eg mealworms š and crickets š¦ 7. You can also give your CP dried food but it is not usually as nutritious (itās like swallowing dried bread š without water) In a further post today for #cpclubthursday , I will set out a dried CP food recipe I made up and my VPs love it even thoughthouh I only feed them as an occasionaloccisonal treat. Competition for #cpclubthursday Beginners Guide To Nepenthes Amazon Kindle ebook Welcome to CP Club Thursday #cpclubthursday for this first week of July 2024 šOVER 135 MEMBERS !š Best comment will win a Beginners Guide to Nepenthes by the Windowsill Nepenthes YouTuber, Remi FEATURE: CP Workshop Talk So I have already posted about the Carnivorous Plant (CP) talk I attended today and I just wanted to add some useful information I learnt from the speaker, the owner of a CP nursery who was open to being interviewed for the podcast being worked on and soon to launch for those interested Greg community members. * he uses a substrate mix of 70% per at moss, 20 % perlite and 10%sand for this ābog CPsā (eg VFT, sundews, sarracenias) * while most plants like slightly acidic soils, if the soil is too acidic it locks up the nutrients and denies them to the plant. However for CPs they prefer more acidic substrates as they also do not like minerals and nutrients in their substrate * he recommends water that is less than 50 ppm even if Nepenthes can tolerate more minerals in their water than bog CPs. While Nepenthes can ātolerateā tap water it should at least be less than 100 ppm. * treat ābabiyā CPs like babies so give them more attention and take more care of them. As the plant grows, it can tolerate more and is less sensitive (in part as the greater amount of substrate acts as a better insulator at protecting the plant. * Nepenthes substrates can be fertilized and tolerate fertilizer better than bog CPs. However the fertilizer should be a milder one eg orchid or native fertilizer which is less potent and strong or high in nitrogen * high nitrogen can lead to more leaves and bulkier or bigger plants while high in eg potassium like flowering or fruiting fertilizer will lead to more pitchers. * recommends repotting every 1-2 years and to use a mix which encourages oxygen eg adding perlite or large particles like bark pieces or LECA, even gravel. I anticiapte more tips and tricks well be included in the podcast interview or the accompanying blog. For more information or suggestions email me at my profile email And so many new CPs and CP owners, many of whom I have got to know personally as they ask some great CP questions. And great photos and comments. Welcome our new members! Add any interesting Carnivorous Plant (CP) facts, photos, or anything CP-related for this week.
