#newplants ! Yesterday I went to the annual plant sale at Leu Gardens in Orlando (btw if you want to go but haven't it's still going on today -- March 9th!). It was super fun, and the gardens were absolutely stunning. So so so many vendors were there, it was huge! Of course I had to immediately make my way over to the carnivorous plant tent. He had more plants than usual, which was of course, amazing! I ended up getting 2 nepenthes, 2 drosera, and 2 sarracenia. Spring is on its way!! The days have been warming up here in FL. My Sarracenia, venus fly traps, and temperate drosera & pinguicula have begun coming out of dormancy! It's so nice seeing them growing again - I always miss them over winter. My Nepenthes have also been going crazy with pitchers. I've been struggling to find that perfect environment, soil, and watering schedule for them, but I think I've finally got it! I can't wait for all of my temperate plants to be out of dormancy fully. #Nepenthes Hybrid - Amazing! Meet my new carnivorous friend: Nepenthes Mirabilis Winged x Ampullaria Black Miracle. This is a hybrid I was lucky to find at a very, very reasonable prince. It is stunning. The color palette from the leaf to the trap is simply outstanding, and in one week it already gave me a new leaf. It's my first Nepenthes, I'm not going to grow it hanging, and I will admit humidity doesn't always reach the necessary levels - as always I'll make do. This weekend I received #plantmail ! I ordered from a new place, so I was of course a bit worried about shipping (especially during winter). What didn't help was my package getting held due to a winter storm. Luckily, my cephalotus and nepenthes spathulata x veitchii arrived healthy! Well, mostly healthy. The cephalotus did arrive with some yellowed pitchers and leaves. Though, it has one huge pitcher! This is my 2nd cephalotus, and compared to my first one it's huge. Definitely excited for it to get some color as well! The nepenthes is super pretty too, the pitchers are a lovely pink. I also found some tissue culture plants that were being sold and impulsively bought a Drosera. I have absolutely no experience with tissue culture plants, so any advice on transferring it from the gel to soil is greatly appreciated! I also don't know the exact species of Drosera that it is, as the only label is "sundew". I asked the ladies who were selling it and they pointed at the screen, which showed a Drosera capensis, but it doesn't quite resemble one. I'm thinking that maybe it's just because it's super young? Also, some bonus photos of a swamp area. Hey y'all! I've been busy the past few days, so first off happy (late) holidays to everybody 😀 Aside from family stuff, I've been primarily busy with plant stuff. This past Thursday I spent a while dividing 2 of my venus fly traps! Goodness, they had really multiplied in those pots!! I decided to split them up into several tiny venus fly traps instead of leaving bigger clumps so I didn't have to repot them again for a bit. They do look a bit sad at the moment, and that's mainly because they're all pretty dormant at the moment. Majority of them do have larger traps, they just shed them for the winter :) I now have a crazy amount of venus fly traps, but it'll be fun watching them all grow over summer! 😆 I've also managed to keep my Heliamphora Minor alive so far. I made a little mistake with the watering (didn't realize it in fact is not watered like a Nepenthes) but it has recovered since then luckily. Another little update is on my Sarracenia seedling!! It's definitely one of my favorite plants at the moment just because of how absolutely adorable the little baby pitcher is! It's so tiny too!! It's grown a lot since it first sprouted roughly 2 weeks ago. And, my Nepenthes Alata is also growing super well! I don't post my nepenthes often, but they are up there with my fav plants. #cpclubthursday CP CLUB THURSDAY for November 28, 2024 “Because if it’s Thursday, it’s Carnivorous Plants Club! “ Welcome to #cpclubthursday 🌟NOW OVER 235 MEMBERS !🌟 FOCUS: Unboxing lots of VFT varieties I found this video and thought it might be worth a watch for anyone who wants to consider different cultivators of VFTs (no, not my video or VFTs…pity 😞) https:// Some things to consider if you plan to expand your CP collection: * check the mineral levels in the water you are using eg TDS meter (unless using distilled etc). Cheap TDS meters can be found on eg Amazon * check the light eg light meter app (eg Photone) * check the humidity (all CPs like high humidity) so a terrarium can be fun for some CPs * check water access (bog plants like VFTs like sundews and VFTs like constant access to water, Nepenthes like regular watering) * consider how many hours of light per day (eg VFTs can handle 16 hours under grow-lights), cut back during dormancy periods * remember dormancy periods (drop in temperatures etc) as it allows your CP to rest consistent with its natural location (hence why Nepenthes, being tropical plants, don’t have a marked dormancy period like VFTs and sundews) I have seen some great CPs being shared by #cpclubthursday these weeks so thanks for including the hashtag to alert other members to your posts! It’s amazing to see some many Cephalotus under one roof. So I was able to take some photos of the terrariums and other Cephalotus. These can be a bit tricky to grow but under the right conditions (like all CPs) they can thrive. And something rarely seen - a Cephalotus with a flower stalk! They can be tricky to pollinate and even to get seeds from but this Cephalotus owner managed it.
