How to fertilize Violet Prickly Pear
Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Violet Prickly Pear after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

#freshleaffriday My big Opuntia survived the cold and is back with a new bloom. Yah, that's corking lol.

#freshleaffriday I remember reading "the pads take over a year to do anything" after snipping and proudly potting Sydney's pups in a cement pot. That was two years ago, so...accurate. All the porch plants feature at least one clump of white dog hair. That Copiapoa has been through the worst times, but I can't bring myself to give up on it despite the constant mealiebug issues. I put it outside in too much heat, and it spit out pups. And my misshapen crested euphorbia. Do whatever you want, man.

#succulentsquad June 3rd vs June 28th, 2025. The two pads in a cement planter are pups from last year. I can confirm they are slowwwwww growers. Note that this was my first "big plant," and it went through all kinds of naive experiments - it also used to be a squirrel snack.

Would this be the beginning of a new pad growing? #PricklyPear
-
So, since I'm trying to propagate a pad that has broken off, do I need to keep the soil more moist than the cactus would normally require until it roots? #PricklyPear
-
Normally how long does it take for a prickly pear cactus cutting to produce roots? It's standing on its own now so I'm kind of comfortable with it but I'd like an idea if anyone knows.

I get itchy just looking at her, but this was $10 well-spent last year on my first big cactus. I pruned two ears to make more space, offered them to a Facebook seller who told me she was "on medication" and would get back to me that night, but eventually put them in their own pot. #succulentsquad #cactusclique

This is Sydney, who was my first big plant purchase. I immediately bought a new grow light and set up a table etc. The thing is, she just wants to live and will do whatever for that. (The Gratitude mug is ironic as I found it in a pile of trash after a really bad week.)

Is my purple prickly pear flowering? He’s put out 3 of these little shoots in the last 2 weeks!
