Can you repot indoor plants in the winter?
I've heard that the plant needs to develop new roots in the pot, but it is difficult to do in the winter because they don't grow much. Most of my plants are actually growing pretty quickly. Could I start re-potting them now, or wait until spring? Thanks Greg gang :> #happyplants #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantaddict #newgrowth #planttherapy
Where I am it doesn't get too cold (usually) in winter, so I don't see much slowing in growth. Therefore I repot year-round, if the plant needs it.
I also use grow lights on a lot of plants and keep pretty much the same cycle year round, so the only thing to really slow my plant growth is the cooler temps.
Basically, if the plant is actively growing, no concern with repotting. If it's "dormant", then you'll have a higher chance of rot as the plant is not taking up much water. If you HAVE to repot, try only watering it a little and letting it thoroughly dry before watering again. Keep this watering cycle until you see new growth.
Again, this advice is based on my experience in my own home environment with my plants. Every plant and environment is different!
Good luck and ask away if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it 😊
I'll be re-potting most of them then :))

@RaineStorm Hello 👋 Kat!
I have been repotting several plants indoors. I usually put down a huge garbage bag and get my potting mix and I keep my pots nearby. Always use a pot with drainage. I am now using all terracotta pots, I absolutely love them. @RJG can tell you.
@jaysjungle has a great explanation.

Yes. Keep them warm. Lay a fleece on top of any surface as long as the house is warm and then set a cardboard box that is flattened on top. Let it rest about an hour. Your plant should be warm from being indoors as well. Your home should be between 60°F- 75°F yo prevent the roots from getting cold. Same with the soil. Basically, acclimate everything and then plan to use a touch of room temp water after it is re-potted. I’ve never gone without reporting when they need it with this method. Just don’t be in a rush. Take your time and make sure your plant is pampered. I usually do it at night when no one can make noise or disrupt the process. I’m the kind to play classical music while it’s being done. If I turn on the calm app and pretend there is a slight rainshower outside. I’m THAT plant lady. I’ve never had a plant go through shock once I figured it out. Even my fussy Calatheas are ok with the method and change from one room to another when I do this.
I definitely don’t recommend repotting in the winter. It is not the temperature that poses a concern, but the short days and weak sunlight. Sun = plant food, and it takes a boatload of energy to reestablish their roots in new soil. Plants in the wild never have to do this so they haven’t adapted to handle it well.
I always suggest waiting until the days are longer so your plant can recover faster and stronger, and there’s less risk of losing the plant!
If you have grow lights you should be good to repot, but if not I suggest waiting until spring.
