Show me ๐ธ your propigation progress #succulentsquad โฃ๏ธ๐ ๐ฟ...
This morning while having #coffeewithsucculents I admired my bowl of multi-headed graptopetalum leaf props while I gave them some water to butt chug ๐ ๐
[edit: last pic is the bowl of props cause #glitchygreg reordered the ๐ธ ๐ ]
They are so happy it's getting brighter outside! ๐๐๐
These are mostly graptopetalum paraguayense + some hybrids.
@WickedValkyrie
[edit ๐ธ pics 1, 2, & 3] are props that became double and even triple ๐ฏ headed because a base leaf was removed shortly after the leaf prop became a rosette - I've seen it happen when the leaf is still attached and sometimes right after it's become solo.
In another month they will probably need a new pot! ๐๐ฝ ๐

My hoyas are growing... succulents who knows?!
My hoyas are growing... succulents who knows?!
They're so pretty! I had a triple headed Jade leaf prop, but unfortunately it didn't survive because the various heads essentially grew out of the mother leaf in a little ball and it wasn't able to take root after the mother leaf fell off... I kept trying to help it, but I guess it just was not destined to survive... ๐๐คท
@dreamlettuce cute! ๐ I know propagation in winter is so hard ๐
My smaller props are finally growing steadily after all the wet, cold weather!

@Propa Wow! You are so organized! ๐ฏ๐๐ฝ๐ Very impressive.
I don't label mine...
Maybe I should, but half the fun is forgetting what they are and then trying to figure it out later!๐

@roxyvivien thank you! I have to, otherwise itโs total plant chaos in here ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ most of the time I propagate blindly and then when they grow up I find out what they are and they get a label๐
@WickedValkyrie ๐ฏ she was too ambitious for her own good that Jade!
But on a more positive note, there's never any shortage of succulent props around here!
Last summer I did about a hundred leaf/stem props from my #bonsaisuccs Jade plant, #TheAlmightyZeus... You can see a few of them here, two of which are being total showoffs. ๐
I'd say the one in the skull is by far my most successful #ChildrenOfZeus prop, but there's also one that started as a leaf prop and now even has babies of it's own! (Bottom left in the collage of four different props.)
I also have about a dozen (golden?) sedum props popping off, my beautiful aeonium balsimaferum is getting her variegation back, and while I seem to have terrible luck with tiscalatengo gorge sedum leaf props, I do have two little babies that aren't doing too bad! One is even double headed! (:

There's also #Pรคrlskogen (The Pearl Forest in Swedish)! We've lost quite a few pearls over the last couple months, but they've started pushing out new growth now so hopefully in the future the whole top of the soil will be covered again... (:
@roxyvivien Unfortunately this was due to not having electricity for 3 days ๐ญ๐ญ but itโs okay! Iโm slowly working on getting my oasis back ๐๐ฝ
@dreamlettuce Omg that's horrible! ๐๐ญ
I'm so so sorry! ๐ฅ

I have extras and doubles of things I would be happy to gift you! โฅ

SOP props are a challenge! ๐ฎโ๐จ
BUT... on a positive note, I've had good success with SOB's ๐ & SOH props! ๐
SOB I can just plop them into any arrangement and they grow really well! ๐ ๐
I just give them a tiny bit extra water right next to where the roots nodes are a couple times a week until they grow down to find it. ๐

Great news about the SOB's! ๐ Hopefully Turtles are pretty easy too
Great news about the SOB's! ๐ Hopefully Turtles are pretty easy too
I've actually had good luck so far with Pearl props, aside from this one. (I wasn't giving them enough water at first I think.) I usually just set them on top of the soil and then sprinkle a bit more soil on top of the stems, leaving the pearls exposed and then mist every three-five days until they take root. After that I go to watering every two-three weeks. I have my props in full/direct sun so they need more water than usual. My mama plant only gets water every three-four weeks, but she's bigger and in indirect sun. (:
I have a mess right now to where I can hardly tell you what is growing but I will share what I can identify: these are from Nike. She became etoliated and looked tired so I plucked off her leaves, left two on the primary rooted stem and left a few on the other piece to stick in a tray next her head. Theyโre all growing.
@Propa Your props look amazing, what medium do you put them in? And do you use any kind of rooting hormone?
@vvvelo Looking good ๐
@AnthuriumQueen OMG, how do you do that? You just put them on top of the soil and they grow roots? I thought one had to stick them into the soil, maybe thatโswhere I went wrong! Duh๐ค๐ ๐
@Ms.Persnickety you can put them in succulent soil with perlite or lite pumice. The leaves should face upwards as they are on the plants, mist once, make sure they get enough light and neglect for a few days. Thatโs how it works where I am. Itโs humid where I am but thatโs the general concept. Itโs easy!
@vvvelo looking good!
@moon_moss very nice!
@roxyvivien so pretty!
@AnthuriumQueen can you guess what I have there? ;)
@vvvelo Baron Bold, a few ghost plants, maybe a moonstone, Lola.. I canโt really tell.
@AnthuriumQueen you guess only moonstone ;)
@vvvelo Iโm not good at guessing with babies. Itโs very few I get right with adults as well unless Iโm around them regularly.
@WickedValkyrie
I'm using this Bonsai Micro Mix +Ivy May Succulent Soil for my sop props (see below for details) ...
For my SOP plant I previously used Hoffman Succulent & Cacti soil, but I don't use peat-based soil anymore for succulents so I mixed my own this time.
*1 part Ivy May succulent soil
*1 part Bonsai Micro Mix
*1/2 part coco coir mixed with 2 Tbs worm castings.
Oh, and I put a thick layer about and inch and a half of 1/8 inch particle size pumice on the bottom of the pot cause the SOP roots are so tiny and shallow they will likely not reach the bottom, but the pumice will hold a touch of water in case without making the dry out time for the entire pot too long.
"Ivy May Succulent Soil" is an interesting mix of a "soil" made from redwood, plus pumice & perlite, so not really soil at all ๐
So far used it with the soil mixes in my my SOH, SOP and Nanouk and a couple Echeveria w/ good results.
The Bonsai "micro mix" soil is a super fine particle size (1/16 inch) of bark, akadama clay & pumice.
It's perfect for succulents that have very fine roots or used alone for rooting propigations... But I mix it with other stuff (mostly coco coir and more pumice or lava) if it's not just a propigation.
Hope that helps! ๐

@roxyvivien Yeah, I donโt know what Iโm going to do with those. I have 5 pots that have the mother plant in them. And sheโs already dropping leaves in those pots too. I think I have maybe 60 in that one tray. Itโs 20 inches and Iโve given away so many leaves already.
@Ms.Persnickety
Yes, it's pretty amazing you can just set in a pot and "leaf them be" ๐
Most succulent leaves prefer just to be laid on top of the soil.
There are a couple species that like to be slightly pushed into the soil but not too many.
You can put them in a pot with another plant & do nothing but the normal water schedule and see what happens - often a good way to start...
Or you can water or mist them 2-4 times a per week very lightly.
I've tried out every method of leaf prop, & I prefer to lay them on a thin layer of Coco Coir that's in a shallow terracotta saucer or bowl (no more than 1-2 inches thick of soil) and water the soil w/ a little squeeze bottle (not on the leaf or the prop) very lightly a couple times per week (or every 1-2 day in summer because I prop outdoors! )
Sometimes, I put my favs in little tiny Nursery pots like these and bring them inside under a grow light. ๐
Hope that helps! ๐ ๐

@fitsedum quality problems!
@Ms.Persnickety P.S. I just read @fitsedum leaf prop tips, and forgot to mention, as she did yes, it really depends your location/temp/humidity! ๐ฏ
So my tips above are more for dry locations...
I'm in Los Angeles where it gets dry and hot so my watering habits are more frequent than others. โ โจ๏ธ ๐

@WickedValkyrie I just have a tendency to get heavy-handed with the watering can, so I prefer to give them something more soilless lol ๐
But for ones I know I'm going to keep outdoors where it gets hot and dry in summer I add more coco coir or put them in glazed clay pots.

@WickedValkyrie Awww, you don't suck at all @fitsedum does a lot of plastic too - I just have a thing for design and ceramics!
@WickedValkyrie You gotta do what you do!
Lots of ppl Gift me pots for giving them plants... I don't take money for my plants but I will always take pots and soil ingredients! ๐

@WickedValkyrie your plants being in plastic pots doesnโt mean you suck. Mine are in plastic liners because Iโve experienced fast growth (not that @roxyvivien doesnโt). It doesnโt make sense for me to buy ceramic or porcelain pots to make all of my plants look good when they are being moved from one pot to another every two seasons. Not to mention that per my aesthetic, I prefer black pots that wonโt calcify or stain after several waterings (Iโve found black terra cotta pots. Cute but they leach water which is fine but not on my finished wood surfaces). The only ones I gave in nice pots are in my design office. The rest cater to my are utilitarian side which is a modern industrial style. Can you imagine ordering 400+ black terra cotta pots in a matte black with sizes between 2 inch wide by 2.25 tall through 20 inches wide by 32 inches tall? I also get snow where I am so imagine moving the largest ones indoors every year. ๐
Thatโs not going to happen. Plus, using plastic liners allows me to water from the bottom and popping them into their cute porcelain pots as soon as the water is soaked up in my office. And it makes it easier to go from one size to another. The point is you donโt suck just because you have plastic. You may have been trying to figure out what your style is going to be for your plant collection and itโs taking a bit longer. Thereโs nothing wrong with that.
@Ms.Persnickety thank you! A few months ago I made a large batch of Willow water- very similar to pothos water. I used that for awhile as a rooting simulator for a lot of these props. Then I generally use soil/perlite as a medium although some have graduated to Pon (Iโm experimenting ๐)
@roxyvivien I wish I had friends I could gift plants to... ๐
@AnthuriumQueen I can't even imagine what it would be like to try and order that many terracotta pots!! And think of the $$ that would take! ๐ฎ
I do also generally prefer a black aesthetic so that's why most of the pots I've purchased are just liners/nursery pots, but my hubby doesn't like the way they look. He would prefer I had cover pots on them. I told him if he wants to buy me 100+ cover pots, he can, but otherwise he's gonna have to deal with it. ๐๐ค
I've also recently started using clear things from our recycling which is fun cuz then I get to watch the roots do their thing! (:

@WickedValkyrie I would have to have them made for me. I have found some that are rubber and I love their lines however at $135 each and I need 10, the next step down being $109 and I need 20, etcโฆ, I could just go with plastic for now. I only put a few in pretty pots and I need to go buy 40 today. Somewhere, Iโll find 40. I donโt know where but Iโll find them. Maybe EAS has sone. Or Rainbow Gardens. Iโm ok with some local ones but Iโm not into all the colorful pots since they need to take a backseat to the rest of the office. See pic below. Itโs a matter of personal style. I love the cute fun pigs however they donโt work in my own office. I wish they did but they donโt. ๐
@AnthuriumQueen Ohh I love those beaded pillows!!
@PurpleSucculent Omg I love the two rosettes on your stem! ๐
