Orchid experiment.....
She's in a self watering pot but it's not set up like a self watering pot. No wick. I'm using the bottom part to catch the water. I'm using distilled water. I put a layer of the chunky bark and then a thin layer of leftover live spaghum moss i had leftover. Then a layer of the chunky bark to hold her in place so she doesn't fall over. I left some of her roots exposed so I could keep an eye 👁 on them. After doing some Google search I see now they use moss and bark. I thought they only used bark. I want to see if the live is better than that other dried up stuff you buy from Lowe's. I hate that stuff. #orchidlovers #happyplants #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantcorner #newplants #plantlove #plantlovers

@planthoe40 Hi Misty most of my roots are exposed. I’m not sure about the spaghum moss it retains too much water . They are more like air plants growing in trees. I use perlite and orchid bark .
@planthoe40 excellent Misty! 👏 I’m so proud of you! Moss and bark is a *wonderful* orchid substrate, given that the moss is nice and fluffy, and there are plenty of air pockets.
While they are epiphytes, if they were put only in bark we’d have to water them every day or every other day like it does in the rainforests and tropical regions they’re native to. Putting moss in there ensures that they have humidity around the roots, and means that we don’t have to water so constantly! You can also use the moss on top as a kind of water measuring tool. Once it dries out you’ll know it’s time to water again. Did I read that right that you’re using live moss? 😍
