Not sure y’all are ready for this planty horror story…👻👹
I worked Memorial Day, so had a little extra holiday pay burning a hole in my pocket. 💸 I decided to use some of it to order a wishlist plant- The ✨✨ hoya heuschkeliana variegata✨✨ 🪴
Well…Anywho…. the flipping mailman put it ON THE GROUND against the GARAGE DOOR behind where we park!!! And my husband backed out and ran over it. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🙈🙈😭😭😭 Poor guy was mortified and texted me at work panicking. I finally unpotted today and it’s a mess. But as my dear friend @dreammachine reminded me, hoyas are rock stars of resilience. I dried my tears, repotted the best I could, and have her in a good spot with good soil, humidifier 💦 and grow light 💡. Fingers crossed, Hail Marys prayed, prayers sent up that she will hunker down and come soaring back like a phoenix 🐦‍🔥 rising from the ashes! 🙏🏼
Do you have any plant horror stories? #thewateringhole #mamalinne #hoya #hoyaddicts #plantfriendsarethebestfriends #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #GregGang
@MamaLinne “please don’t leave me!” 😂😂
@IWantThatPlant I love that line too 😂😂
@MamaLinne deep breaths 😮‍💨😮‍💨 it will be ok!! They are the bad*sses of the plant world. I picture hoyas with a slight glare, folding their arms, in a figurative sense, and saying, “yeah? So what 😒”

That plant has been on my wish list for a year, and even though this is a horror story, I think you’ve inspired me to actually go get one, with my Memorial Day weekend 💸😅
Oh my 🙏🙏🙏🙏
As long as it has roots, and even if it doesn’t 😂 it should be ok. My heusch variegated I got last year grows like a weed and blooms. With mealybugs!
My plant horror story is just: kittens.
@MamaLinne 🤭😝🤣 Please don’t leave me!! What a sweetheart 💞!! It looks like you did a great job of putting Humpty Dumpty back together again 🥹. Oh I haven’t run one over but I’ve dropped many a plant 🪴 🛘. And it’s never the cheapest ones 😝 or the ones we don’t care about that much 🫥. I ordered a syngonium wendlandii years ago from a shop in Florida. When it arrived i mistook it for an item I needed for a horse show so I put it in the horse’s stall bag. So it went from Florida to San Diego then to Las Vegas before I realized what happened 🙈. Fortunately it survived the hotel stay and the car trip back to San Diego ✈️ 🛻 🚗 🗺️ 🙄 🏡
@captainstardust omg so cute 🥹🤗🫠
@captainstardust soooo cute!!! I have an ahole kitty who chews up my plants. Doesn’t eat them. Tears them up to get my attention. He’s a jerk.
@IWantThatPlant that cracked me up too! Glad I have him appropriately terrified. 🙂‍↕️😆
@DreamMachine yes! HHV twinsies!
@PricklyThumb oh, I love to hear that! (Well not the mealy part)
It did seem pretty sturdy, unlike a lacunosa I got a few weeks ago that had tissue paper roots. 🫠
@captainstardust it’s not their fault! Justice for the kittens!!
Howie has decided the prop heating mat is HIS, of course only after he chews holes in all of the baggies. 🫠
@MariansOasis HAHAHA oh no!!! That’s totally something I would do lol!! 🤪 And, you have just named this plant for me…”Humpty!” 🤣🤣🤣
@PricklyThumb it’s your fault for having plants, tbh 🤷🏻‍♀️😂🤣🤣
@MamaLinne I’ve got a jug of purecrop1 and time off in a week or so. Going to get them all treated. I’ll get those mealies yet. If I have to have a pest mealies are my pick 😂
@MamaLinne

Oh no dear Deb!
I can imagine how mortified you and your hubby were.

I feel that it in this modern age, because of technology, things move too fast and humans are racing to catch up.

Your mailman probably didn't even think to put your beloved plant newbie by your front door.

When you next see him, I'm sure a gentle reminder will deter future calamities!!!

But... from our very awesome Community, 👌 you've been given 😀 😊 😄 lots of love and encouragement that there is hope ❤️ that your long-awaited Hoya will grow with your loving care!
@CutePolypremum I agree- I hope I’m calmed down by the time I see him lol!! But you’re right, and thanks for that perspective! I know they’re worked to the bone and I’m guessing he thought he was doing the right thing by putting it where we could “supposedly” see it. 🫠😂
Awwwww...
I've learned from experience how the drivers from UPS, FedEx, the mailperson, etc. are often frantic because of the crazy schedules they're on.

If it's wicked hot out, and I'm home, if I can,I make a to go cup filled with ice and water.
They're so appreciative.

During snow and ice season, I let them fend for themselves...lol

Please keep us posted with updates of your Hoya...
I
Ohh no! 😣 I am so sorry! 😞 Putting it right behind the cars is terrible! I hope it pulls through, and maybe you’ll just end up with like 4?? I mean that would kinda be a great ending to a not-so-great start?? 🤞🤞 If it doesn’t for some reason pull through, let me know and I have a couple I can send you some cuttings or something. I hate when great people have terrible things happen and your poor husband I’m sure he’s a wreck about it; you can tell how much he loves you and knows how much you love these guys 🥰
@captainstardust omg, I have one too!! A “sitter on plants,” that is 😂😂😂
@PricklyThumb ooh! I was just looking into purecrop1! Have you used it long? If so, how do you like it?
@PricklyThumb I have a cat who uses my admittedly overly dramatic reactions to cats going near my plants as a tool to get my attention. Sneaky little sh*ts! 😂 Fortunately the main offender cat doesn't usually go so far as to start munching on them. No, she's figured out that all she has to do is jump onto the bottom shelf of my grow light rack (where I keep all of my Tradescantia) and like magic I'll come running. Every. Single. Time. They train us very well, don't they? lol
@DreamMachine I just got it a few weeks ago. I’ve been watering all my indoor plants with it to start. But once I get my time off I’m going to spray everyone with it after I remove visible mealies. And keep spraying them every 3 days. So🤞it’ll do the trick!
@MamaLinne @princesspitstop @debbiedo @CutePolypremum @MariansOasis okay it just took me a few hours, but I’ve got your horror story right here.

Remember how we were talking about how to sterilize perlite? And we said hydrogen peroxide but don’t put it in the oven like soil because it might pop because that’s what it is?

Well apparently I COMPLETELY forgot about that and I was emergency drying out my lithops soil that’s mostly rock and perlite because I finally watered but realized he’s splitting. 🤫🫠

“I’ll just dry the soil out for a little bit!”

…4 minutes later and explosions from oven cause me to shriek and dodge for cover. I managed to realize what it was and turn the oven off. Not before several more perlite popcorn incidents.

If you need me, I’ll be head down in a pile of pillows like emu. 🥴🥴
@MamaLinne 🙏🏽🙏🏽🤞send happy thoughts of healing and new growth. Hubby is great he knows
@DreamMachine I agree
@MamaLinne You’ve got this! Looks like some of those pieces have roots. I bet you’ll have it growing in no time!
@captainstardust my daughters cat does that it drives me crazy🤑
Can’t remember how long ago I dropped this pot. It was a work morning, so no time for repotting, I pieced it back together and held it while my hubby taped it with packing tape. Got as much spilled dirt in as possible. Left the hubby to vacuum up the mess. Intended to repot in a new pot the following weekend. Didn’t get around to it and the plant has thrived.
@MamaLinne Howie looks so handsome sitting under that healthy plant. 🌱 He probably thought you bought that heating mat just for him!
@DreamMachine Oh no NADIA!! I was wondering who was going to volunteer to see if we really couldn't oven roast perlite. Thanks for taking one for the team!! 😁 I'm glad you're still here to tell us about it. 🥰 Can you just imagine that eulogy??
@DreamMachine Thank you for ensuring that I NEVER try putting soil in the oven since most of my pots have lots of perlite mixed in!
@princesspitstop, @DreamMachine that would get a good laugh from hospital employees reading about it in a physician’s history and physical report! That’s one I haven’t seen yet in my 40 years of hospital experience.
@RefinedSandwort ha! If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!….wait…
@DreamMachine 🙈☄️🧯🎆🧨
@RefinedSandwort @princesspitstop @MamaLinne

Yes, yes, you’re welcome everyone! Now we know for SURE. 🫠😶

“Here lies DreamMachine, whom miffed it in her kitchen, doing what she loved…making popcorn 🍿 out of volcanic rocks.“

I can imagine the reaction of the hospital employees 🤣🤣🤣
Oh my. What a catastrophe. And truly, love all "cat"astrophic stories following this post. (Even though, once again without pictures I can only extrapolate and imagine those) makes me miss the thread and think we need to dust off the #petsofgreg tag more often.

I also agree with everyone else here. While it would be extremely annoying to buy a mature plant, looking nice and full and maybe hoping for soon-ish blooms, the absolute worst case scenario probably would be you ending up with a *lot* of smaller heuschkelianas either already rooted or from cuttings. And with enough light and water they can grow decently fast. So you would end up with a home full of them. Wouldn't that be nice.🙃
@captainstardust your first comment made me grin from ear to ear and look over at my dog at "his" spot at the window sill. I can count myself lucky when he just pushes his head through the plants and damages some leaves. The amount of times I've had to pick up and repot several different hoyas and orchids (a heuschkeliana among them as well, btw, @MamaLinne) because they obviously were hindering from people watching...
So again, I can just say that with maybe two exceptions for now, at least the hoyas I've collected have proven to be amazingly resilient.
@DreamMachine 😂😂😂
Aaaah that's what happened to my perlite-heavy hoya mix last time. Not quite as bad, maybe. And I wouldn't have been able to put it into words quite as beautifully 😅 and love the epitaph.
@Idplantthat you are SO kind to offer! Thank you! I think she will be okay- those pots are usually a bunch of separate rooted cuttings anyway. The main root ball is a lost cause, but thankfully, not too much leaf damage and they all had some semblance of roots.
@MusicalRedmint 5 different heuschkelianas..oh noooo whatever shall I do?? 🙂‍↕️😌
Just had a short precious moment with pictures loading. Love love *love* the cat pictures. And the cats. Very creative in the way they use your jungles.
I'm adding Mr Sleepy to the mix. He is not always the resting type, and maybe those pics can show the slightly precarious situation I've been describing.
It is even better when I close the curtains a night I usually use a clip in the middle and he blindly and determinedly pushes his nose through the remaining opening, bunching the fabric all around him - and the plants. But what would a true jungle be without wildlife, right? 🤷‍♀️
@MamaLinne the horror!
@MusicalRedmint ahahaha, Mr. Sleepy ☺️ What an expressive face! My Emerson does this too, and then stands up on his hind legs and paws at the glass…and he is not a small kitty. 😆

Glad you like my epitaph 😂 And what really hits home to me yesterday, was that I was making gyoza 🥟 on the stove and waiting for water to boil and I almost left the room to do something “real quick” and I told myself firmly, “no. You’ll get distracted. That’s a sure way to burnt gyoza.” And meanwhile the perlite was in the oven heating up and I had already forgotten about it. 🙄
@MusicalRedmint what an adorable pup!
@PricklyThumb my Mimsy likes to climb the moss pole in my monstera for the same reason. As if she can’t just come sit next to me for attention?!? The screen climbing is just for fun, apparently.
@captainstardust HAHAHA naughty girl! 😍
@captainstardust @DreamMachine @stephongreg I thought that maybe Howie wanted his cat heat mat, which was under the plants. So I ordered seed heat mats, and noooope, caught the little stinker on the new setup today! 😂😂
@captainstardust omg though, what a GREAT picture 😂😂😂
@MamaLinne I only sit on plants— Howie 🐾😂😂
@MamaLinne OMG Deb, I’ve had a cold this week and am late to the party, but this post made my day! Clearly your hubby understands the seriousness of plant mishaps 😂

My most recent plant horror story is my plant curtain bar falling down not once, but TWICE before we got it sufficiently secured. Those plants are just now coming out of shock and getting lots of new growth! 🤦‍♀️
@RefinedSandwort If i didn’t know any better I would say that was a great attempt at Kintsugi,, and wabi-sabi. What we nowadays call recycling the Japanese culture has a long tradition! Kintsugi is more than just a repair method; it is deeply rooted in several traditional Japanese philosophies:Wabi-Sabi: The aesthetic philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and the incomplete.
RAGAGAHAHAHAHA IT S FUNNY IM SORRY FOR LAUGHING. Well I have one too. I was mad at my mom and she brought me an ice pack. She has no plants keep that in mind. She saw smth on instagram and told me “ you can open it and dilute it in a BIG BOWL with water and pour it on your plantsies, it works like fertiliser . “ I didn’t hear the big bowl part and diluted it in a water bottle. Mind you, I HAD JUST BOUGHT NEW SEEDS. And they were MANY. So I angrily diluted it and poured it to all my plants and most of them were plants that don’t want fertiliser and I kinda killed most of them and burned the seeds …
@Jujube oh nooooo 🫨🫨🫪🤣
@MamaLinne , I had the USPS deliver a plant and leave it on top of my fence post over 300 feet from my front door. They then proceeded to wipe out my mailbox and it was laying in the street when I returned home.
@Malagueña oh my goodness! The mailbox didn’t do so well- how did the plant fare?
@MamaLinne , the package was in the mailbox. The mailbox was on the ground. 🥺
