Hello #thewateringhole friends! I was looking for a little humidity dome for my baby Alocasia Jacklyn today, and realized I could turn an old vase over and stick her under there until she grows a bit more. And as you can see, the bottom half of her semi hydro setup is currently a yogurt container- didn’t want to buy a whole setup when she will soon outgrow it. It made me think of other things I’ve repurposed for plants, such as the beautiful ceramic berry strainer for a little orchid I have, and a couple of thrifted bowls and plates I use as saucers, or to hold plants steady on a wire frame shelf. What things have you repurposed, on purpose or because needs- must? @Preciousplants1 it’s not weird at all! It’s taken me years to figure these out- and my understanding is rudimentary at best. I’m finding that after that initial set of blooms dies off, mine do better if I repot in orchid bark and give them a sunny, humid spot. They recover for a while and then bloom again! This is my current big bloomer who took two years of root growing to finally push out this set.
@MamaLinne maybe im@not repotting correctly, my roots just keel over and 💀. After the 3rd one died I said It hurt so much. I haven’t tried again:

@MamaLinne good approach 👍. I repot after blooms too. Not always because sometimes the medium is still just fine. And I’ll repot/up pot when it’s obvious they’ve outgrown the pot.
@MamaLinne I LOVE repurposing things! My mom was Yankee Thrifty and found a way to reuse things. Cool Whip containers became extra Tupperware containers 😆.
So I have a cupboard full of things that I couldn’t throw out because they might be useful one day 😆. I love to use containers for props. Old ashtrays become saucers, old tea cup saucers used here 🏡 too! 👍🙌

One of my other favorite things to repurpose are tin buckets! They make great cache pots. And I love thrift store crystal trays and dishes for drip trays and saucers!

I love this topic and the idea of using a large vase as a humidity dome. My husband has a standing joke - that would make a nice planter -because I’m constantly using things for my plants. One of my favorite things is those single use clear plastic clam shells you can get at Costco or at the grocery store for propagations and I’m currently on a kick where I’m using thrift store mugs to nurse pots. I will use sticks and branches from outside as my trellis. One of my very favorites is drilling a hole in the bottom of tea cups, and using the cups and saucers for smaller planters. And I’ve saved countless yogurt containers for plants. They’re great for starting propagations.
@MariansOasis oh I love this one too. When I go thrifting, I always look for things that I can use for Plant and get almost all my pods, there. I’m always on the lookout for crystal platers and glass plates for saucers.
@Preciousplants1 that doesn’t sound weird to me at all. I get very upset when I kill plants. I have overwatered a few orchids in my day.
