Dun dun DUN.
Happy Saturday (or Sunday) everyone!β˜€οΈ
repotting day is finally here for my huge pinstripe calathea. (Or night, as it is 2.30 am here rnπŸ™ˆ).

And girl, holy shmoly MACARONI🀣🀣πŸͺ΄
I knew she was rootbound, but.. like.. how were you happy in there??🀣

Crossing fingers she will be happy in her new home too🀞🀞

Also, she has a new leaf coming in, I didn't even notice. I usually try to repot when they are dormant to not damage new leaves πŸ™ˆ Fingers crossed everyone🀞🀞

@MockingJay @RefinedSandwort Right you are, Iβ€˜d say thatβ€˜s some serious Root Porn!
@RefinedSandwort @Ms.Persnickety spot on 🀣
@MockingJay wowee, what a beast!
@MockingJay WOW 🀯 😱 That is some serious root porn, thats INCREDIBLE! She’s going to love her be pot πŸ₯°
@MockingJay holy moly that’s a root extravaganza!! πŸŽ‰πŸŽŠπŸΎ wow 🀩!! Gorgeous plant πŸͺ΄. How long have you had her?
Woo hoo πŸ™Œ girl that’s some sexy #RootPorn it must have been busy under that soil . And the plant is sexy too 😎
@DreamMachine @debbiedo @ILoveMyPlants thank you guys😊
@MariansOasis I bought her as a small plant december 2022. And we have had our differences πŸ˜‚

She has always been growing, but has given me lots of ugly leavesπŸ˜…
During fall 2023 I did a rage-split and got 2 dramatic plants instead of 1πŸ˜†
6 months later with still no changes I transfered to pon. Which didn't seem to help either (start of 2024). But she has been standing in that same pot and same substrate since. And about a year ago she decided she was OK after all, and started giving me healty leavesπŸ˜‚

It might have been she was more happy in pon than soil after all, but it really takes some time before you know with these guysπŸ˜…

Her sister is nowhere near the same size as she is, but she has had the same progress with unhealthy/healty leaves (pic of her now)😊 She is in need of a repot too, but I am waiting for her new leavesπŸ˜…
@ILoveMyPlants your comment made me πŸ˜‚ Plant is getting biZZZZAY πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
@MockingJay She looks gorgeous!!! Im trying to wait til after the 20" snowstorm to repot my Majesty, Cat palm & others over a yr beyond repot date so pray for me cause its gonna take an army here!! U did good tho girl!! U r much braver than i!!!!

WHOLLYGWAKAMOLLY! What a beautiful plant! It’s going to love to stretch its roots!! πŸͺ΄πŸŒΏ
@MockingJay Thanks so much!! What else to do when the snow is 10" deep and still falling? Right?🫢πŸͺ΄
@BuffCaperspurge I know what to do! Do you want to build a snowman?πŸ˜πŸ˜β˜ƒοΈ
@ZestyWhiteghost 🀣🀣 Fingers crossed there will be no drama this timeπŸ˜…πŸ€ž
@MockingJay OMG!! I ALMOST said that!! GMTA!!

Ha ha ha πŸ˜‚ wow, that’s some serious rooting going on! That fat little buddy looks like it’s about to go wild! 😜
Oh my word! What a beast! I’ve never seen such a big healthy before πŸ˜πŸ‘
@MockingJay oh wow yes plenty of roots. I’d say repotting is in order πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ«ΆπŸΎπŸ™πŸ½
Just today I have been severely tempted by a pinstripe. Don't do that to me. And wow, that's some rootporn. Had immediate bow-ckicka-bow-wow tunes going through my head at the sight of it.
@MusicalRedmint If you need a deterrent, just remember it took 3 yearsπŸ˜‚
Don't need extra deterrents. I just need to go and curse out my baby Dottie from time to time to get a reality check.
What's more, I was lucky enough to stumble upon it while browsing an online shop with a big enough calathea selection to paralyze me completely. They had the pinstripe and two or three similar ones. Couldn't decide, remembered the state of and frustrations with my Dottie .... and left the site - for now. πŸ˜…
@MusicalRedmint oh but the Dottie is waaay worse, I haven't been able to keep one yetπŸ˜…πŸ€£
@MusicalRedmint I reccomend the Makoyana, or Freddie as some the most viable onesπŸ˜„
Nah. Dotties are great. A breeze! I went for the baby one to give me a challenge, I guess.
Or, the more plausible explanation for it:
I once had a reasonably happy, bigger Dottie, which made me think at some point, she would allow me to repot her. Pft. The hubris. She croaked in a matter of days after that. No idea what happened. And since I don't like backing down, especially not when my opponent just doesn't communicate well and up and leaves like that, I obviously needed a replacement. But I also thought chances would be immense, I'd kill the next one too and I hate wasting money. So the baby it was.
And just to spite me, that very baby Dottie now has been muddling along for the last year. Stressing me out, dropping leaves, growing leaves, staying small and annoying.
So yeah, for now no more drama queens. Not even sexy pin-stripie ones
@MusicalRedmint haha ROFL 🀣🀣 They do make for funny stories though!🀣🀣
That they do. Enjoy yours - hopefully with less annoyances
I was going to ask what you use as a substrate! I lost my pinstripe, it just hated everything I did. I would love to try again but I’m seeing how it goes with my new #CalatheaMusaica (so far, it’s very happy!). I’ve never tried pon before and I think we’ve talked about it before! Lol. I have to find out where to get it because clearly, your plants are very happy in it! 😍🩷
@BabeVila yes I first bought a plant that was already in it (my Yellow Fusion). So I thought I had to keep it in what it was used to so bought a packπŸ˜† Turned out the Yellow Fusion was more happy in soil after allπŸ˜‚ So each plant their own!
In theory you need to be more in line with the fertilizer with pon (but I don't really have a clue, I just give it some liquid fertilizer like the rest now and thenπŸ˜‚). I have bought the "clean" pon ("basicpon"), as they also sell ones with fertilizer "lechuza-pon", and I have been afraid that will burn the calatheas πŸ˜… I have also rinsed it in rainwater before use as it is quite muddyπŸ™ˆ..
