How to fertilize Heliamphora Hybrid
Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Heliamphora Hybrid after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

New Year New Growth Happy New Year Everyone, For those who have expressed interest in Aelius, my heliamphora, I wanted to share this fun observation. I can see when a new trap is growing before it emerges! There it is in silhouette inside the latest trap. Aelius has finally found his happy place. All the old unhappy traps have been replaced with healthy new growth. As soon as a trap opens, reddens, and flattens a new one will appear just like this. I remember reading these guys can be very slow growing but now that he’s established I’m getting new traps every couple weeks. Maybe it’s just his active season? #CarnivorousPlants #CarnivorousClub #HappyPlants #cpclubthursday #heliamphora

PSA: Distilled water and pathogens As I clean algae out of my humidifiers (again) it seems like a good time to remind everyone that while distilled water is free of the chemicals that are harmful to your plants it is also free of the chemicals that keep pathogens at bay. Your distilled water is only as sterile as the contaminants it comes into contact with: your watering can, humidifiers, hands, tools, vases, roots, soil, etc. Even particles in the air can settle into an open container and cause contamination. This is especially important during warm weather, in window sills and on heating mats. Pathogens loooooove warmth. As a bonus, please enjoy these pictures of Aelius enjoying a free lunch- the algae eating midge I found on my humidifier. (Thanks for your service, little dude.) #TipsandTricks #CarnivorousPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #HappyPlants #

Heliamphora browning around opening? Trap Queen outgrew her tiny bog so I recently built her a bigger one and got her a roommate. Aelius is a heliamphora and he’s brand new to me (in terms of experience and recency). I hope the #CarnivorousClub can help me make him happy. TQ was heat stressed before I replanted her, so she’s obviously going through a lot but she’s putting out some new traps. I think she’ll make a fine recovery. (If she doesn’t she was a #GregPlantShop purchase so I can replace her) Aelius is starting to brown around the opening of his oldest traps. He has one young trap that has yet too open that looks fine. I have no idea how old his oldest traps might be. I have read these grow very slowly, so it’s possible they are aging out or maybe less resilient to transplant shock. I have also read that these guys like less water than other #CarnivorousPlants so it’s possible he just won’t do great in a bog. I have seen successful co-plantings of heliamphora and VFT though. I recently shuffled the planters in this spot so these two will get more light, but they’re in basically the same spot. (The picture of the group is the old arrangement). Any ideas? Should I take some action or wait and see? #cpclubthursday #cpterrarium
