How to fertilize Fabian Aralia

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Fabian Aralia after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

New plant with black spots on leaves? I just received a new plant two days ago - a Fabian Aralia, which looks super cool, and I really want it to last a long time. Unfortunately I was checking the leaves today and noticed some black spots on them. Is this black spot fungus? Or sometime else that I should be concerned about? Appreciate any help, thank you! #Fabian #FabianAralia

Can someone guide me? Suddenly my plant just started to "faint" slowly one by one and then dry some branches. I changed the soil, put some liquid fertilizer and nothing keep in the same dying direction 🥺 #NYCGregGang

Pest identification help! I saw this little creepy crawly in my plants drip tray today . It kind of curls up when disturbed then unrolls and crawls slowly. What is it!? Don’t notice any plant damage or bugs in the soil. #PestControl #pestID #PlantAddict #PlantsMakePeopleHappy

I got this guy yesterday and I’m obsessed! I hadn’t ever heard of this plant but needed to have it as soon as I saw it. What are some of your wishlist plants? Thankful for my apartment hosting a plant sale in the lobby twice this week!! #PlantHaul #wishlistplant #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #NewPlants #GregGang

Leaves are falling #NewPlantMom Please Help! He’s dropping a crazy amount of leaves, almost half now. I bought him 3 months ago and had him in front of the south & west windows in the corner of the room where he was doing fine. Then it got cold out and the windows are drafty and cold and he’s started dropping leaves. I moved him across the room where it’s warmer, but he wouldn’t stop dropping leaves. So I got him a grow light. Still dropping leaves. This has been over the course of 8 weeks. I worry I’ll lose him if I can’t figure this out. Please advise, I really like this guy and I don’t know what else to do. 🙏 #PlantAddict #NewPlantMom #BalfourAralia #GrowLights

Fabian Aralia is generally easy to care for, though some plant parents report facing challenges with growing it. Check out the reviews down below to read more about their experiences!
💦 Water Needs
Fabian Aralia prefers for the soil to dry out between waterings and should be watered regularly. Use our water calculator to personalize watering recommendations to your environment or download Greg for more advanced recommendations for all of your plants.
☀️ Sunlight Needs
Fabian Aralia may have difficulty thriving and will drop leaves 🍃 without ample sunlight. Place it less than 3 feet from a window to maximize the potential for growth. Select your region to see how the current weather in your area affects the placement in your home 🏡.

💨 Humidity
Fabian Aralia doesn’t require additional humidity. Plants absorb most water through their root system rather than their leaves, so the best way to provide humidity for your plants is through watering the soil.
🪴 Soil
Fabian Aralia does best in well-draining soil. A good soil will contain lots of organic matter such as coco coir as well as perlite or vermiculite to help with drainage. Adding a handful of perlite to regular store-bought potting soil should do the trick!
💩 Fertilizer
Fabian Aralia should be repotted after it doubles in size or once a year, whichever comes first. Fresh potting soil has all the nutrients your plant needs, so as long as it’s refreshed yearly, you shouldn’t need to use fertilizer. Remember, plants get their energy from sunlight, not fertilizer!
🌎 Native Region
Fabian Aralia is native to Pacific Islands.
⬆️ ⬇️ Growth Pattern
Fabian Aralia grows vertically and new growth will emerge from the top of the plant.
🌦️ Growing Outdoors
USDA Hardiness Zone
Fabian Aralia can be grown outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 10-12. Find your local hardiness zone here.
🌱 Propagation
Fabian Aralia can be propagated by the stem method. To propagate:
- Make a cut just above the node. The node is the break in the stem where the leaf emerges.
- To get the cutting to root, you can either:
- Place the cutting in water until roots emerge and are ~2” long and then transplant into well-draining soil, or
- Place the cutting directly into well-draining soil and water when dry.
🧐 Troubleshooting
When troubleshooting a sad-looking houseplant, start by checking for signs of distress in its leaves, such as yellowing, browning, or drooping, which can indicate overwatering or nutrient deficiencies.
Inspect the soil moisture; too dry or too wet soil can cause problems.
Ensure the plant is getting the right amount of light, as too much or too little can stress it.
Finally, consider environmental factors like temperature and humidity, and adjust care routines accordingly to revive your plant.

What other plant parents say

I’ve had this aralia for almost a year now it’s still a baby plant. It grows slowly indoors but seeing the leaves get bigger is worth it.
Needs humid warm air. Mine lives in low light and near an A/C and it’s doing just fine.
It’s watered infrequently and thanks to Greg I can remember when to do so. It’s just super dramatic when it’s thirsty 😆
