Vine Maple likes soil that is good at retaining moisture. Your plant shouldn't need added fertilizers if you repot each time it doubles in size.

How to fertilize Vine Maple

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Vine Maple after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

Not as upright and straight backed as it was. Leaves limp and turning green. Not quite as happy as it was 6 weeks ago, although still growing. #JapaneseMaple

If you saw my last post, you’ll recall that I have a mystery #pest. It’s been chomping on new and older growth and is showing very little mercy. Today I sprayed some #NeemOil on my tree. Here’s to hoping it’ll help!

Japanese maple recently adopted from Lowes… suppose to be able to plant it immediately and my contractor parked his trailer where it was supposed to go . He left it there for 3 days.. finally got it planted tonight so the picture is dark… how do I get the plant to its glory??

Anyone know what might be eating my plant? UPDATE: potential culprit added to pictures. Closest set of ids I got are #woodlandfuzzyant, #maskedhunter, and genus Trypoxylon, a species of #wasps. Any help and suggestions on how to divert the #pest (without killing it if it’s a native or beneficial species) would be greatly appreciated!! I’ve been checking for a few days not and haven’t seen any caterpillars, but I haven’t seen any bugs around it either. Thoughts? #damage #plantdamage #mapletree #michigannative #PestControl #pestID #bugID #identify

Does this look like root rot? My acer palmatum pre-bonsai had been growing well, but at some point the leaves started browning heavily from the edges inward. At first I thought it could be leaf scorching due to too much sun, so I put it somewhere else where it would only get sun in the morning and just a little bit at noon (just didn’t have an even shadier spot available). Other than that, in bonsai class they said: “acer is a tree that loves humidity, and as a bonsai, it should be watered every day”… at the beginning I watered it fully everyday because the soils would always get dry, eventually the temperature started dropping a bit, and sometimes soil would still be slightly moist, so I would only spray it a little bit, assuming the next day it would get dry. Anyway, my tree started looking worse and worse, so I decided to check the roots, took it out of the pot, rinsed the roots, they’re not completely dry yet, but I took this pic before deciding to repot. I’d like to make sure first.
