Want to try a new experiment for #WhatTheSuccWednesday? πŸ€”...

πŸ’‘Hi #Greggers! I came up with an amazing idea for #ScienceWithGreg! I’ve been doing tons of experiments for #Aroids and whatnot so why not have some fun experiments for the #SucculentSquad too? 😌

🧐I’ve been researching tons of propagation ways online and this one caught my eye. I haven’t been able to do it yet since I don’t have any leaves to propagate, but I figured #GregGang could give this easy and fun experiment a try! According to the interwebs: it’s an easy and fun way to watch succulent leaf propagations root without needing soil!

βœ…Here’s what you’ll need:
β€’ Plastic water bottle (8 or 16oz)
β€’ 1-8 leaves/cuttings/props of your choice
β€’ Water (can be Distilled, Purified, Tap, etc for more results!)

⚠️Be careful when placing props in the holes! I’ve been made aware it can damage the props! If it’s transplanting time, you can cut the water bottle with scissors to get your babies out, BE CAREFUL!!!⚠️

❗️Directions: Cut holes in the water bottle to hold succulents leaves in place (check images for reference). You may have to angle them and play around with it a lil so they don’t slip or fall through. After placing your #succulent props in their respective holes, fill the bottle with water (check third image), keep lid/cap off for air circulation and place near a sunny windowsill (if you’d like to use a #GrowLights, go ahead!) Give at least 4 hours of light a day (max 8 hours). Keep at room temperature. Do not change water unless it becomes muddy or yucky. Keep water at fill line throughout the experiment, if possible! ***trying to keep it as controlled as possible to get somewhat same results!

πŸ“ŒIf you’ll be trying this experiment, make a post with the tag #ScienceWithGreg and include in the title β€œSucculent Propagation Experiment”.

❗️Let us know what succulent(s) you’re propagating, start date of propagation, if under a grow light or windowsill (and what direction, how many hours of light), and what type of water you used! I’ll kindly ask those who do try, if you can update in a week (7 days)! 😁

Question? Concerns? More ideas for succulent propagation? Let me know what you guys think! 😁🌿✨

Okay I’m in! Sucker for science projects 😝 πŸ˜† #ScienceWithGreg #WhatTheSuccWednesday I’ll use an 8oz bottle and it looks πŸ‘€ like the water line should be at about the 4th line up. Scouting for leaves this morning. Will post later. Fun project @kscape !😁 🌱πŸ§ͺ🧫
Propagating Jade and not sure what else.
I want to do this to my #officeplantsandprops I have some succulent leaves in water there but this looks so much more interesting!! Thanks @kscape for motivating me to go to work today!🀣🀣
@PlantEsteem πŸ˜‚πŸ‘πŸ˜
I've seen this before too! Never tried it! Look forward to everyone's results!
I’ve done this before, looked very cool to try out…. Not too sure if the success rate increased but it was difficult trying to remove them once they formed a big enough pups. I also waited till the leaf shriveled up but then some of my babies dropped in the water and rotted. My suggestion is to be very meticulous with this project. Please share the results, y’all probably have a better success rate lol πŸ’š
I'm totally going to do this today!! I have had NO good success propagating leaves on purpose (except for tossing burro's tail back into the pot and ignoring them or picking them up off the floor with roots already sprouted).
@KikiGoldblatt one of those looks like a variegated jade plant! πŸ€”πŸ˜
@PlantEsteem Try it out! Let us know how it works! 😊😊
@MariansOasis Yessss! Thank you for reminding me that water bottles are 8oz πŸ’€ but you’re absolutely correct! Excited to see your results! 🀞🏽✨
@AguaViviente I’ve heard good things and neutral things from this method of propagation! Unfortunate that it didn’t work for you, but maybe give it another shot? πŸ€πŸ˜‰

I know people who didn’t have a high success rate kept them in cold rooms, props were too damaged/weak, constantly played/touched with; it could all most definitely affect the end result, but still fun nontheless!

I figured if the props get too big, some people will take scissors and cut the bottle but sometimes I forget that not everyone has the crazy brain I have so I may have to put that in the post πŸ’€
@sarahsalith Yay!! I can’t wait to see your results!! About the burros tail, yes I agree. That’s how I ended up with 16 🫣
@discreetwildyam Im sending GOOD VIBES 🀞🏽🀞🏽✨✨
@kscape πŸ’š me going to get that bottle I threw away lol πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ
Well if I wasn’t on vacation 5 hours away from home I would TOTALLY jump on this!! I’m hoping to see some amazing results from some people!!
@kscape got em ready to go!! Almost makes me wish I worked day shift so I could get there sooner🀣🀣 But then I wouldn't have seen your post....πŸ€”
So cool! Will defiantly be trying this. I do wish Greg had a bookmark option for awesome post like this.
Ooo I'm gonna try this with a 12 fl oz bottle but I'm not sure what type of succulent it is, here's a pic
Ooooh I might try this! This looks fun! My kids leave water bottles everywhere so that's covered and i have succs to prop..i might not know what some of them are 😬 but I'll stick em in there!
@ManyLime #mysterysuccs! it’ll be fun to see what they grow into 🀞🏽✨
@DazzlingOasis looks like an echeveria β€œcoral glow” maybe?
Im thinking that's a 16 oz bottle? My 8 oz bottle is one of those mini ones... @kscape DEFINITELY #mysterysucc 🀣🀣
@MariansOasis @ManyLime i wrote this at 3:17am πŸ’€πŸ’€ yes a 16.9fl oz regular drinking bottle will work. If you use a 8oz, just make sure to document it in the post! πŸ’•πŸ’• much love to y’all and bear with me! πŸ₯Ή
@kscape no worries! I have both! And I did it! A couple of casualties 😬 that plastic is SHARP and can saw into the tender flesh of the succ but it's done. Just trying to figure out where I want to put it.
No full sun?
@ManyLime East or West window! 😌 also, I didn’t think about the plastic being sharp 🫣🫣 oh no I’m so sorry 😩😩 what have I doneeee
@kscape oh don't worry about it! I realized I needed to make the holes bigger instead of trying to cut to size. Just a word to the wise. I figured I could cut to size and slip them in but then any movement cuts into the succ.
So anyone doing this, make the holes a little larger and slip in and adjust.
If you see how many I have in this bottle, only losing a few is a miracle 🀣🀣🀣
@ManyLime I added a warning in the post, tysm I appreciate u!! πŸ₯ΉπŸ₯Ή
Any time!
Oh. Here's a pic. I ended up doing a big AND a small because I found more succs I forgot on the front porch AFTER I put my bottle in the window πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„ and there's no more room left in that bottle. I only got a pic of the one bottle. Im sleepy lol. I'll take more pics later. But it's in an east window next to my window box full of succs.
@ManyLime girl pls make a post with the #ScienceWithGreg! πŸ’•πŸ’•
Ok ok ok. I'll make the post and add more pics after I take a nap 🀣🀣
This is so interesting! I'm curious as to what everyone's results will be!! πŸ‘€πŸ‘€
@DazzlingOasis those are pretty awesome and easy to care for. Haven’t tried propagation with mine yet.
@SirLiquorice the only reason I'm propping it is because I don't own the mother plant, it's for sale at the grocery store I work at.....does that count as stealingπŸ˜…
@DazzlingOasis lol yeah many stores call it proplifting
@DazzlingOasis I was able to find mine on close out sale at a grocery store in the abused and neglected section. It was only $4
@DazzlingOasis it looks so good and healthy now. It was already bad looking when I got it and then it was attacked by mealy bugs so it got really bad. The sprays made it even worse. After using the bonide systematic poison in the soil it now looks better than ever and has recovered it just took awhile. There’s no way it would’ve been on sale for $4 if it looked like this when I bought it. You can’t even tell now how bad it was at one point.
I wonder if you could do this with Jade cuttings? I already have one Jade cutting in water with a pothos cutting. I do want to chop and prop a Jade that's getting leggy @kscape
@Sassylimey Yes! You can most definitely do this with Jade cuttings! I’ve done it before, not this way exactly but placed moist moss and β€œhovered” the cuttings by stabbing a toothpick through 3-4 leaves, above the moist moss, giving it humidity only and not making contact with moss. I can’t imagine it wouldn’t work!
Thank you Dariana, I'm thinking of trying to "hover" the cutting above moist moss. The Jade cutting in water with pothos has a tiny root already, only 3 days 😁
@kscape lol I posted too early evidently tooπŸ₯±πŸ˜΄! Meant 16.9oz. Not little pony bottle πŸ€ͺ😜😝
Annnnndddd......done. @kscape you want updates next Wednesday right?
Hope I got some signal for these pics...
@PlantEsteem woooo you did great!! Yes! Please :)
@PlantEsteem so cute!
@kscape @MariansOasis Thanks 😊 I'm looking forward to Wednesday Succ science
@MariansOasis ooooh I'm jealous of your cooler Poland springs bottle lol
Great job!!
Omg 🀩I should participate! I have too many leaves! And I don’t really care if they will propagate but this is a good way to try new method! 🀩🀩🀣
Can't wait to try
@ProudKeylime Hey! Welcome to Greg! You’ll love it here 😊🀍🌱

If you do decide to try, make a post with the tag #ScienceWithGreg!
Do updates please
I tried this once. It went poorly. But heck why not?! Maybe this is a sign to try again 😹
wow! i have done something similar with a mason jar and cling wrap rubber-banded over the top (i cut holes in the cling wrap & put the props in). i had some success with happy white roots & some roots that turned brown so i’m excited to see the results of this !! :-)
How's it going
Whaaaaaaat, this is way to cool! Can’t wait to give it a try!
