What's a good name for my curly redhead with freckles new...
Hi All,
So I saw her in a Nursery, her leavesπ± locked with my eyesπ and it was instant - we both knew we were destined to be together! But how?
She was a bit pricey π° and yet sad π’ and I was on a budget π
But it was fate! The kind young shop assistant kindly reduced the price and we were finally together and happy πππ€©
So I took her home, gave her a haircut (the dry pitcher) and a distilled water shower and she was happy.
But, there was a problem, she didn't have a name. Wait, I said, I have some friends on Greg app who come up with name π‘
So here's a little description to help:
- She has red hair (her pitchers)
- She has freckles (on her leaves)
- She has curly hair (tendrils)
- Below is a photo of what her pitchers should look like (after she recovers from her neglect at the nursery, she was the last pitcher left)
So can you think of a name for her? The best name (names) will be used but only one can be the best answer

@PlantJedi Good call Terrance! Straight out of the box, I'm impressed and already that is going to be hard to beat. My spider senses are already tingling.

@Nocturnal666 Not weepinbell?
Hii, may I suggest:
- Max (from Stranger Things)
- Nobara (from Jujutsu Kaisen, if you're into anime)
- Ruby (just because red lol)
- Nala (bc lioness from Lion King)
- Cady (from Mean Girls, which would make sense for a carnivorous plant if you ask meπ)
- Giselle (from one of my childhood movies, "Enchanted")
- Hinata (unissex name, in this case inspired by the protagonist of "Haikyu!!", also an anime)
and I also second @FlowerFairy 's idea, Merida is a very cute name for a pretty lady who's not to be underestimated!! ππ₯°
Best of luck, whichever name you choose she'll thrive and always look stunning ππ©π»βπ¦°π πͺπ»
*thought I might add a character from my country's (Brazil) folklore, her name is Caipora, a guardian of nature who makes confusing noises to trick hunters until they're lost in the dense forest (she's related to Curupira, this lil fella who has a hair made of fire and his feet backwards to trick poachers by creating a weird trail π)

@FlowerFairy There's no π here, I do consider every suggestion serious and then go and research the name on possibilities. So I do take Merida seriously and actually when I last did this a great name, I think, was the result of such good suggestions. So your contribution is anπand just makes it so much harder to make a final decision. I sometimes wish I had bought 12 plants but even this one was not planned and now I have to find her a nice spot so she will be happy and grow. And I like other people picking names. So thanks for your responses, Rebecca. I hope you don't mind but I even have Rebecca as a consideration even if not the final name as I am thinking eg Rebecca Ferguson would fit the bill. But we will see, l almost feel it is easier to pick a name out of a hat. ππππππππ
@CourtlyKingfern I confess I thought of Annie too, Evelyn, and she certainly fits the description well. Especially the freckles so she is on the list of choice names. I also like the photo so thanks for going to the extra effort.
@Merranda I know you are very good at picking names. But I didn't know you knew about frilled neck lizards. I've seen them, have you? I managed to find some very cute ones as well. And the association with the sun π is very apt when I look at her, she is so much more sun-kissed than any other Nepenthes I have. So i will give it some more thought. Thanks for always contributing but now I want to buy a little lizard π¦
@Seymour I haven't seen one in person, but I have seen videos of them. I'm pretty sure that frilled mane looking thing is a defense mechanism, but it's more adorable than scary lol. I just like reptiles π (especially Alligators.. but that's a bit stereotypical considering I'm from Florida π
- for context FL = crazy people and lots of Alligators.. Floridamanbirthday.org is a fun website)
Lizards are amazing. I have one (well gecko technically) and my family always says that I hate bugs because I have a ton of carnivorous plants and a gecko π Which, I mean, they aren't wrong

@PlantLord πΆ βPippi Longstocking is coming into your world. A freckle faced redhead girl. You oughtta know, sheβll throw your life into a whirl!β πΆ
@misya420 Hi Melissa, I have been to Massachusetts and I loved it, I wish I lived there! And we now have some "Wendy's" restaurants here which is exciting. One of my best friend's name is Wendy and so, from her, I know the girls name comes from the creator of Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie. You can ready more at the link below and the Wendy, Wendy Darling, also happens to have red hair so it's a very good name. And Wendy's certainly has freckles like my baby πΆ. So thanks for contributing!

@Merranda Now you are talking my language, Merranda! I adore geckos and when it rains, they used to walk up the glass windows with their sticky feet πΎ We have a lot of different geckos so I thought I would share some photos of some. And I love seeing them eat insects with their tongues. So I think maybe lizardsπ¦ and CPs are a good match. I think I would call mine Gordon Gecko if I ever get one. But with so many good names for my Nepenthes it's going to be hard to pick...but it's nice to find out people's other interests so I don't mind. How's your Ceph going, I might send you some photos of mine as it is growing a nice pitcher...bigger than the rest, which is a great sign. I wonder what your family think of Spike?
@Macstracks Yes Chris, I just have to give her some love, distilled water of course, and a name. And all these choices make it hard. Any word on your Nepenthes arrival day, I am counting down and I think we might feature a particular plant each week but if you have any other ideas let me know. I don't know how you manage with all that plant mail but it doesn't seem to stop LOL Anne is a strong contender when I consider it...oh so tough but fun as well! Keep trucking π ππ

@Seymour She has shipped but looks like toward the weekend! I love that idea man of a plant feature each week since I know I had no clue there were so many carnivores plants out there. You may just have to take all the names put them in a hat and draw lol thereβs a lot of good ones in there! ππππ 10-4 and Keeep on Truckin Brotha!!! ππποΏΌ
@HeraMonstera @PlantLord
Hi Mike
Hi Hera, I wondered when someone might suggest her, she certainly fits the bill and her hair sticking out is like the plant's tendrils so that has really thrown my life into a whirl...but a good one! Thanks for the great suggestion, Hera & Mike

@eeriewoodlander Hi CF, I am really going to have to take some time to consider all your suggested names but I love your contribution so much I might need a Guinness to recover from the research! I love your Brazilian suggestion as I know some on Greg who is in Brazil. I might even mention the name to him in case he wanted to use it for his plants, he has some lovely ones.
You could have the best answer, "Stranger Things" have happened ππππ Like Kate Bush making the charts again by Running up that Hill (not the original title by the way), love that song and a great show ππ€© as for mean girls, i may need to sleep on that suggestion! Thanks CF, really appreciate it

@Seymour oh no, Iβve seen Jurassic Park. Donβt let em fool ya!
@Seymour loool glad I could be of help, cheers for the Guinness π»
interesting about Running Up That Hill, I had no idea π I think Max would be a nice inspo if we're looking for the "sassy/feisty" vibe lol but there's so many great options here, I wouldn't wanna be you rn, despite your beautiful plant collection ππ I hate being indecisive...
Best of luck, and perhaps a pint of Guinness will indeed provide some enlightenment ππΊ lol keep us posted!

Hi All
Please accept my delay in coming to a decision but thanks so much for making my task so much more challenging than I had anticipated as i think it helped me to come to a decision i am very happy to announce.
And i think if you read the character description below you may also consider it an apt name. I think he had more to do with her wild curly locks than the freckles at the end of the day. But i would be interested to know if you like the decision.
I can honestly say i would not have even considered or researched into the name without it being suggested here.
So the name of my redheaded Nepenthes (or at least her first name, I still may add others) is
Merida!
From "Brave"
Congratulations Rebecca as you first suggested the name which was also supported by CF, at least.
She may end up as Merida Rebecca Ferguson to add some more beauty and freckles to her name.
Here's a description of the character of Merida
Personality
Merida is a very bold, brave, daring, courageous, stubborn, rebellious, and headstrong girl who does not fit the stereotypical princess role. Rather than being a damsel in distress who is subservient to the customs, traditions, and social restrictions her society places on her and expects her to follow, Merida openly rebels and defies her heritage as a princess and would like for nothing more than to be a normal girl. She is very athletic and enjoys nothing more than riding her horse Angus and practicing her archery, of which she is the best in the kingdom. She also seems to be skilled in sword fighting, as shown in the Brave featurette "Cutting the Class". Merida tends to be ungraceful and has bad manners, and is extremely tomboyish.

@Seymour I love it! And your post has given me an idea! I just created #HelpMeNameMyPlant! Your naming posts have been a really fun way for us to interact, get creative, etc. And, since itβs not a plant species specific group, we might all find a new plant that is missing in our oasis! π Whatcha think?
@Seymour Yayyyy congratulations good sir! π₯³ Thatβs a gorgeous name, it really suits her βΊοΈ Great job @FlowerFairy for the excellent suggestion! π€©πΏ And thatβs such a great idea @Corinne! Sounds like another wonderful way for Greggers to be able to come together and share the plant baby love βοΈβ¨
@Corinne
I think i created #namemyplants or #namethatplant or something I can confirm after I send this.
I am so pleased Corrine, the thought had occurred to me but i create so many groups i don't want to be greedy. I will support you 100%, i assume you are happy to be the "face" of the new group! Anything i can do to help, just let me know. I have a few more plants to be named as well. I think the idea will take off. Great minds think alike
Glad you like the final name, we had a lot of fun as I Love Lucy...but she not a redheaded comedian, this Nepenthes, she's already showing she is a bit wild and feisty!
And I have tried to at least double the membership of some of your groups, i hope you don't mind. But i loved some of their names as well.
So let me know about #helpmenamemyplant
It's membership will be doubling before you know it π€©ππππ€£ππππ
We could just go with #name

Are you planning an announcement post? If you need a willing first "victim" let me know, I have a VFT that could be named. But i assume you will just do something like this or Pinky Gossamer to get the ball rolling and create some interest.
I do have a Cephalotus which might encourage people. As I say anything to help my meme tennis πΎ player

@Seymour love that movie I have watched it.. cute..
@CourtlyKingfern yes I like Annie and had it one my list but when i researched Merida every other name fell away. It is fun though...not easy to decide but fun to participate
@Seymour aww thank you for your support π i didnβt realize you had created a group! I checked your tags before replied to you. π₯Ή If youβve already got one we can definitely use yours! Otherwise, I just got in from creating a few containers so I start a post shortly! I got some #plantmail this week so I might have a few to sacrifice as well ππ₯³
@Corinne I had issues with Greg again trying to type a reply so gave up and am trying again now.
Let's go with your suggestion, I don't even know where I find all my tags, I really don't know my way around this app very well.
And looking forward to your future post, I can leave off any memes if your prefer...I don't want to railroad your posts but I do enjoy our meme banter some times.
If you can show me how to find my tags, I would be grateful.
So let me know how or if I can help me name my plant. Love it. And it will work! These posts have proven the model works!

@Corinne here's some totally unrelated to plant memes. I am at the stage now where I forget what I have sent to whom so I may have already add them for you. Hope you have a good Weeknd! And thanks, any issues I will happily delete if notified, sometimes I don't always let political correctness stand in the way of a good joke.
@FlowerFairy Hi Rebecca, I have to concede I didn't know a lot about Merida when you mentioned her. And I am glad you won as form your suggestion you felt it would be an automatic πwhen, & I didn't anticipate it, it ended up being a big π. And fortunately Merida Rebecca Ferguson just works in my mind. Hopefully you will be participating in any future namings. While the best answer and plant name may not seem much, I now have a much better name than I could have done on my own. I have already renamed Merida and she is definitely living up to her character name so far. Enjoy your weekend! I may post some photos of Merida. I may have to watch a certain πDisney movie in the coming days if I am Brave enough βοΈππππ
@Corinne hahahhaha, that first meme is so me, and the second one is, well touche...thanks for them.
I keep losing replies, maybe Greg knows i post non-plant memes some times .
I have more ones like the two nostrils conversation ones, I find the humor funny particularly as one party is out to impress and the other just kills the moment π π€£ π
I don't take any credit for your new group but I am happy to be a major sponsor at least. And already some friend gave joined. I added a few name suggestions just in the spirit of it.
I will post below what I am doing as entertainment today but here's some more nob plant ones I poster elsewhere on Greg

No guess for what I have lined up for my lazy Sunday afternoon (here) entertainment π
I love Pixar and I need to learn about my new Merida Rebecca Ferguson Nepenthes. I tried to find some freckle shots of the other Rebecca Ferguson.
I love the Scottish accents, I may have to watch Brave a few times.
Thanks Rebecca, it was a lot of fun and now Corrine has created a naming group so I hope you can join and enjoy there too

@eeriewoodlander Thanks CF, I think everyone won from this exercise, I know I and Merida Rebecca Ferguson π§βπ¦° benefited.
So thanks for your participation and comment. It ended up being a long post and you provided a challenge with all your suggestion. I even referred the Brazilian name to a Greg friend. So lots was gained and it was in part due to this post that Corrine created a new naming group...so everyone won !!! π₯³

@FlowerFairy Brave was brilliant, Rebecca, I can't wait to watch it again. It is top shelf Pixar and I can't figure out why it wasn't extremely popular when it came out.
So I really gained from your suggestion as it was a great watch and I think it confirms how good Merida Rebecca Ferguson is as a name. It can't be topper! Thanks so much ππππππ¬
