Dry Majesty Palm

Hey plant buddy’s!πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸŒ΄πŸŒΏπŸͺ΄ I bought this majesty palm a little bit ago and it’s leaves are slowly going yellow. My guess is that she need more sun light, but I don’t have enough sun light in my room and I’m not able to move her elsewere so I was gonna get a grow light. But now I’m suspicious that it could be to much sun light and she’s burning😬πŸ”₯β˜€οΈ please educate me!
Thrive not survive!πŸ’ͺπŸ™Œ

10” pot with drainage

Yellowing leaves on a majesty palm can result from various issues, including inadequate light, overwatering, or nutrient deficiencies. Since you’re planning to use a grow light, here’s what to consider:
Choose the Right Grow Light: Opt for a full-spectrum LED grow light, which mimics natural sunlight.
Placement: Position the light 1-2 feet above the palm to prevent leaf burn.
Duration: Start with 10-12 hours of light daily, mimicking natural daylight cycles.
Monitor: Watch for signs of stress like browning tips (too much light) or continued yellowing (possibly not enough).
Other Factors: Check for overwateringβ€”majesty palms prefer slightly moist, not soggy, soil. Ensure adequate drainage and consider feeding with a balanced palm fertilizer.

Adjust lighting and care based on how the plant responds. Consistent observation will help you fine-tune its environment.
Hi Ducky πŸ‘‹

Does your palm turn brown as well or just yellow? Usually yellowing is a watering issue.

Do you check the soil before you water her?
@Livinglife101 @PlantMompy thank you so much this is all good information! Sorry I forgot to add pics! here looks like and the plant info
I definitely see how that could be interpreted as sun burn, but like you said likely not the case with how far it is from a window.

Does it get any extra humidity?
@PlantMompy My window is a north facing window so it doesn’t get as much sun light but it is a very large window so it gets a descent amount. I saw that this palm needed a lot of sunlight so I put it closer to the window, but it’s in a very inconvenient spot so that not it’s forever spot. But so I started turning the plant every 2week or so to give the other side of the plant but then I started realizing the side that gets more sun on the plant was browning so now I’m doubting my first theory.
No I do not have a humidifier for it but I’m getting two of those natural non-electric ones for my two ferns so if needed I can get on for my palm too.
Majesty palms, really any palm indoors really struggle. It is VERY difficult to provide the humidity indoors that is necessary.

They yellow and growth slows dramatically because of it. They need between 50-70% humidity to stay happy.

When people ask I always recommend not to buy them for indoors. They just don't like it. Your only option to increase humidity for that big of a plant is a humidifier right next to it. Get a cool air humidifier that gives you less risk of burn on the leaves. It takes time for the humidity to climb in the room enough for improvement but it can be done.

I would also buy it a grow light to supplement the light for log term health. Since they are quite needy with light run the light 12-16 hours a day.

The yellowing is due to the lack of humidity though 😒 I would invest in one of the ones that are automatic that you can set to your desired humidity. That way it keeps the plant in consistently humid air. I have one in my prayer plant corner and the work fabulous! A natural humidifier will unfortunately not meet the palms needs. It won't raise the humidity enough to make a difference.
@SuperbRaspfern thank you so much for the info! Does the automatic humidifier, make the whole room more humid?
@Plant_Cuddler Yes, it does increase humidity throughout the room. But it will be higher around the humidifier. But, overall the whole room does have a slight increase. Although I can notice a significant difference in a roughly 5 foot circle around it. The humidity is about 10% less of the far side of the room. Which is about 20' by 30'
@Plant_Cuddler I just noticed you are in Utah where it is very dry! I'm in a very dry area of CA. It took me forever to just give in and buy one. I tried every other way of increasing humidity that you can think of. I am very determined! But I will say it has been a real game changer for my plants. Even my parlor palm is finally happy after 7 years of struggle. She now grows because of it. It has been worth every penny. ❀️
@SuperbRaspfern yes it does get dry here! And it is taking a lot of trial and error to get my palm and some of my ferns to thrive not survive
I just looked at your oasis and see you have some succulents. I'd do too I have succulents and cacti. Just be sure to keep them on the opposite side of the room from the humidifier and they will be fine.

If you start to notice it is very humid near them, you can add a small fan to increase airflow around them. I have small 6 inch clip on ones that I use for my plants they were under 10 dollars on amazon. This will decrease the amount of humidity around them and keep them from getting fungal issues. Succulents and cacti really appreciate good air circulation anyway.
@SuperbRaspfern thank you so much for helping me! This is a lot of great information! Yeah I was gonna ask about that my room is only a 12’ by 11’ room is that enough room to keep the humidity on the one side of the room?
@Plant_Cuddler I imagine you are. You are fond of those moisture seeking babies!! ❀️ It's okay though you can get them to survive with some tweaking of their environment. I have had a good amount and trial and error through the years as well. I LOVE tropical they are my favorites. Life would be easier if I stuck to cacti and succulents but.... I simply cannot help myself!
@Plant_Cuddler I would add the small fan so the air flows around the succulents for that size room. Just point it right at them they won't mind. ❀️
You're very welcome. If you ever have questions don't hesitate to ask. We are all just her to help in your plant journey. If you ever want to ask me just tag me with @SuperbRaspfern I usually check my messages throughout the day. If not there are plenty of helpful people on here. ❀️
@SuperbRaspfern THOSE PLANT ARE BEAUTIFUL!!!! 😍🀩 that’s my goal in life! I love how they’re surrounding your tv! That make a it so magical! Do I point the fan towards the humidifier to blow it away? Or do I just point it at the succulents?
I may just need to do my research but I have a bearded dragon on the same side of the room as my majesty palm, they like the dry so do you have any solutions for that? I will definitely ask when I have questions!❀️
Placing it away will be best if it is toward it it will force the humid air into one spot which could be too much for your palms and cause fungal issues.

So point it toward the succulents and definitely move your bearded dragon next to those succulents. Otherwise your bearded dragon will get breathing issues, we don't want that. I love those guys! He will like the airflow and it will help him stay healthy and he will be able to control his body temperature that way.
Plus I need a photo of the bearded dragon! ❀️
@SuperbRaspfern that sounds great, I will do that!
@SuperbRaspfern and here is that pic of my baby dragon!
What a beauty! I love the markings! Thank you so much for the photo I absolutely love her πŸ₯°
@SuperbRaspfern thank you! I love her so much, she is a unique little one😊❀️
Hey @SuperbRaspfern
My majesty palm’s leaves are now kinda brown with black dots on some😬 no I have not got the humidifier or grow light yet I’m going to the store today to get them thoπŸ˜„ is this a better indicator of what’s happening?
That is to be expected with the yellowing leaves. They yellow, then brown and can also get darker brown spots. I'm sorry 😒

But yes, that is a great indicator that the humidity is nowhere near where it needs to be.

I am hoping that with the humidifier, the new leaves she gets will not have any issues. The leaves that are already damaged will not improve. They will continue browning and eventually fall off.

After you get the humidifier, you can clean up your tree by removing the brown fronds. But try to leave the best ones on. You want at least 2 fronds to stay. Those fronds will help your palm to photosynthesize and improve. By cutting off the all brown fronds. The plant can focus its energy on new healthy growth.

The good news it's normal in low humidity. Hopefully once you get a humidifier, it will stop it from getting further issues.

I will be upfront and honest with you. A Majesty Palm is one of 3 most difficult to keep indoors. So even with a humidifier although it can help and will be better than no humidifier. Even that may not be enough to keep her thriving. I know you are not going to want to hear that. Because she's already there so it sucks. But I also want to be honest and upfront about how difficult they are.

I wouldn't give up on her though hopefully the humidifier will help. I just don't want to give you expectations of a quick turnaround. It going to take time, patience and changes to her environment to make it so she's happy.
@SuperbRaspfern thank you for being honest! It’s good to know, is it going to always be brown? Even after I cut off the brown fronds?and do you have any suggestions for a humidifier? I can’t find one I really like.
Also is the only two things I can do to help her is getting a humidifier and a grow light? Is there any other thing I can do to help her thrive?πŸ™‚
I will send you a link to the humidifier I use. It's from Amazon, it has warm and cool settings, use the cool. Plus a timer and will keep the humidity at a certain amount and turn off if humidity goes up over that amount and then back on when needed.

She won't be brown forever. In time she will start putting out fresh green fronds. It will just be a long journey to get her back to what she looked like when you bought her.

Since it's a smaller room, the humidity should increase pretty fast. With an automatic one you won't have to worry about walking into a sauna.

For my big room I did the big one but with your size room a smaller tank should be fine. I have to refill it around 2 times a week. Use distilled water.

The humidifier and grow light are the big changes that will make the most difference for her. It should help significantly, it will just take time.
@SuperbRaspfern thank you so much! I’m so excited to make her happier!❀️
@SuperbRaspfern sorry lots of questions but I was looking at your oasis and I saw your beauty of string of pearls, what is your secret? I bought one and after a little it just died on me. I didn’t have it in a good sunny spot but by the time I was gonna move her, she was goneπŸ₯Ί do they just need more sun light? I would love to start over again and get her do be a good big string of pearsπŸ˜ƒ like yours! She looks so happy! Also is the string of dolfines and string of rain drops just like the string of pearls? Just different species?
String of Teardrops
Ruby Necklace
String of Dolphins, I took a screenshot from my insta post.

No worries, so for all of my succulents and cacti :

Terracotta pots
Bonsai Jack Succulent and Cacti soil

They all love it and it's really just various types of rock and lava. Holds just enough moisture. I water every 2 weeks right now. I water once a month during winter. During our really HOT summers I will occasionally water them once a week.

But overwatering is the biggest killer. So that soil really helps. πŸ˜‰

And yes their care is the same for all of the strings of things. Although they are different species, I treat them all the same.
@SuperbRaspfern cool! Thank you! Do you pull the dirt out of the dirt it comes in and put it in those rocks?
Yes, work as much dirt as I can away from the roots, I sort of massage it out with my fingers, and the plant them in the mix
@SuperbRaspfern does that hurt the plants?
@Plant_Cuddler I've never had an issue and I have literally around 500 individual plants. It's always the first thing I do if I get one.

Just part of my collection. I think because I have handled plants and done so much with them through the years with bonsai and literally every kind. I have lost that fear of hurting them. They are much tougher than we give them credit for and can handle a lot.

If you think about what they go through outdoors with wind, storms extreme weather conditions and all that life has to throw at them. You change your way of thinking and learn they can handle it and come back from almost anything ❀️

I literally just repotted 3 of my bonsai trees this morning and cut off 1/3 of their roots. Knowing they will be just fine ❀️
@SuperbRaspfern wow! Well know I do know they’re tougher!🀣 good to know thank you!❀️
Your very welcome ❀️
