Typically after a year or two a plant will need a bigger pot, usually 1-2β. So if the plant is in a 4β pot youβd go to a 5β or 6β pot. Looking at the root ball when youβre thinking about going bigger will help determine. Iβve had plants that barely filled the pot they are in, and some that thereβs no way itβll fit in something only 1-2β bigger. Roots coming out of drainage holes π³οΈ is a potential sign too. Roots may have circled the pot and are trying to escape looking for more room. Again look at the root ball to decide. My syngoniums are always trying to leave their pot, sometimes only a few months after a new pot! And I had an orchid that didnβt have any roots showing but when I checked on him the pot was nothing but roots!!! No soil left!! π³ Rule of thumb is generally 1-2 years to up pot if the plant is running out of room in the pot. Or repot in same pot with fresh soil if root ball still has room to fill in. There are some plants that donβt like being disturbed- Hoyas, calatheas, Christmas cactus to name a few. So I tend to leave them be until I find theyβre drying out too quickly. Hope that helps π
