Typically after a year or two a plant will need a bigger pot, usually 1-2”. So if the plant is in a 4” pot you’d go to a 5” or 6” pot. Looking at the root ball when you’re thinking about going bigger will help determine. I’ve had plants that barely filled the pot they are in, and some that there’s no way it’ll fit in something only 1-2” bigger. Roots coming out of drainage holes πŸ•³οΈ is a potential sign too. Roots may have circled the pot and are trying to escape looking for more room. Again look at the root ball to decide. My syngoniums are always trying to leave their pot, sometimes only a few months after a new pot! And I had an orchid that didn’t have any roots showing but when I checked on him the pot was nothing but roots!!! No soil left!! 😳 Rule of thumb is generally 1-2 years to up pot if the plant is running out of room in the pot. Or repot in same pot with fresh soil if root ball still has room to fill in. There are some plants that don’t like being disturbed- Hoyas, calatheas, Christmas cactus to name a few. So I tend to leave them be until I find they’re drying out too quickly. Hope that helps 😊
When it’s roots feels way too cramped or it’s height is too much:)πŸ©·β˜€οΈπŸŒ±hope this helps😁
