What do you use for chunky soiless mix? I always love when you put your mixes up! You always have such beautiful planties! Personally, I use a couple of different mixes, but my core mix generally is this: FoxFarm Happy Frog, FoxFarm Light Warrior, Fluval Volcanic Substrate, Harvest Hero. Then, depending on which Iβm potting, I use Tezula Medium #5 or #7 as well as their #4 perlite, which is chunky and great! But otherwise, both of these mixes are great but hold water differently. Itβs been a great mix for me. Itβs similar to what you are doing. βΊοΈ
@Popcornjoness I love seeing pictures like your mixes! My brain demands simplicity:
1/3 coco coir
1/3 perlite
1/3 orchid bark
If Iβm feeling absolutely WILD, I might throw in a couple handfuls of horticultural charcoal or biochar.
Thatβs it! Easy peasy lemon squeezy, plus light on the wallet π

@WormWarriorFarm I think itβs wise to start simple Rob! Then you really learn what and how each ingredient effects (affects? π€) the others, and get a solid basis of understanding. Then, if you want, you can add other substrate components (like coco chips vs bark, or do you get more air pockets from perlite or leca) but one at a time, and see how it changes things. Itβs all to easy to end up with a failed chemistry experiment in your pot. Ask me how I know π
This is why I add nothing else to my water except for superthrive foliage pro fertilizer. I learned my lesson. π₯΄
@DreamMachine affect (verb) actively/directly influences something (nuts affect a person with an allergy, light affects growth), effect (noun) is the resulting impact (cause and effect). Hunger adversely affects mood, but eating has a satiating effect. An ingredient would affect other ingredients because it influences them, the effect would be the result of that influence (vinegar affects baking soda by creating the effect of fizz)
@smushface thank you! π π
I swear I will remember thatβ¦THIS time
@BuffCaperspurge I actually base my mix off of Mollyβs!! I want to try them, but theyβre so expensive. It would be so much easier to buy Mollyβs versus buying all of these ingredients separately lol
