Where do you all find large terracotta pots without break...
I feel like Iβm losing my mind trying to find terracotta/clay pots bigger than 12β without spending hundreds of dollars.
For context:
β’ My parlor palm is completely root bound in a 10β nursery pot. Its roots are already about 5β out of the bottom, so realistically I need a 12β14β diameter pot with ~13β14β depth.
β’ My monstera deliciosa is also overdue for an upgradeβneeds at least 12β diameter and 10β12β deep.
β’ I refuse to use glazed ceramic for large plants after losing a majesty palm and an older monstera to root rot in one. So itβs terracotta/clay or nothing.
The problem:
β’ Up to 12β, terracotta pots are everywhere for $20β$40.
β’ But the second you go above 12β, they either vanish or suddenly cost hundreds.
β’ Iβve scoured online shops, big box stores, garden centers, local mom & pop nurseries, resell/thrift stores, even Marketplace/Goodwillβ¦ no dice.
So my question:
π Where do you all find your large terracotta/clay pots (12β14β+)?
π If you donβt, what do you do for your big plant babies?
π Is this just a universal struggle I didnβt realize was so common?

Any recommendations, tips, or secret sources would be so appreciated. π

I have found larger terracotta pots at hobby lobby, walmart & tractor supply for cheaper prices then Homedepot & Loweβs, only problem is they are going into Christmas season & taking out all the garden supplies in place of it.. if you canβt find any terra-cotta pots for discounted prices now, Iβd also look out between January and February when they get them back in stock! itβs a hit or miss, but I have found them at thrift stores too. If they arenβt on display it never hurts to ask if they have any in the back. Hope you find what you need βΊοΈ
Real terra cotta goes up drastically over 12 inches because he wall thickness goes up quite a bit equaling alot more material to produce. You can get these new terra cotta pots that have recycled material added to make em stronger and less expensive and they still work great. I got this one at lowes for 25$ like a year ago. It wicks like terra still. But an option is always unglazed interior clay to which you might find for cheaper than terra cotta. Like the second pic it was 65$ but its a really nice huge pot
@Artistic_Stoner Hobby Lobby!! I hadnβt even thought to check thereβdefinitely giving that a try :) And yes, Walmart really is surprisingly solid for pots, but they seem to cap around 12β (at least where I am), and I need just a bit bigger. Same with Tractor Supply.
Thrift stores around here have been slim pickings tooβIβve heard terracotta gets snatched up the second it comes in.
Thanks so much for the ideas, really appreciate it! βΊοΈ

@TheConservator Your pots look perfect! Iβd happily pay $65 for anything over 12ββhonestly, anything under $100 feels fair for the size I need.
I hadnβt come across the recycled options before, but Iβll definitely keep an eye out (and maybe do some digging online). As long as it wicks like terracotta, itβs gold in my book. Doesnβt even need to be pretty, just has to keep my plants alive π

@TheConservator May I ask where about you live? Given how hard these are to find, Iβd seriously be willing to drive a distance to get one at decent price
@SucculentSavant I had luck for 12-14 inches at hobby lobby but it was short lived them moving all the Christmas stuff in.. but I truly hope you find some! Same here with Walmart.. & yes like I said itβs hit or miss with thrift stores on pots & plant stands(Iβm ALWAYS looking for π
), they get snatched so dang quick. I always ask if there is any in the back, Iβve also had success by asking thrift stores to keep me in mind & call if pots/stands come in.. If you can wait, look for sales on Black Friday or cyber Monday & even Christmas sales online.. you might hit a good sale on some! Good luck my friend, hope you find the motherload π¬
@SucculentSavant I have a 16β inch my hubby found and itβs beautiful shape. I donβt know what the shipping would cost but would would be willing to send for that if you check into it . No drip tray though
@ILoveMyPlants plants like her Parlor Palm do much better in Terracotta pots because porous material allows soil to dry out more quickly, which helps prevent overwatering and root rot, a common issue for these plants.
@ILoveMyPlants terracotta bc I own mostly moisture-loathing plants and have the worst track record with anything other than clay or terracotta. π
I currently (still) need pots for my parlor palm (needs ~14β) and my two growing monstera props (need 11-12β).
I know this response is super late, but if you still have the pot you mentioned, Iβd love to see it! I love finding unique pots and would be willing to pay a little extra for shipping if it fits my aesthetic !

@smushface I have no idea how I missed Home Depot having XL pots for so cheap! They mustβve been sold out around the time I was looking π
14β for $18 is nuts! Filling my online cart as we speak ππΌ
@rcuriel84 Thatβs an amazing deal! Thanks for the heads up. Seems like fall is the time to find these babies β¦ finding deals everywhere all of a sudden
