Black Velvet Alocasia New Leaf #BlackVelvetAlocasia

I recently had a new black velvet Alocasia leaf unfurl and I only just noticed it is significantly larger than the leaves that were on it when I bought it.
Is it common for the new leaves to be larger or is there a reason for this? It’s the first leaf it has grown while in my care for a number of months now. I’m just interested.
This was the Black Velvet Alocasia that came with my large martini glass terrarium 🍸

From my expert: It’s common for the new leaves of a Black Velvet Alocasia to be larger than older ones, especially as the plant acclimates to its environment. The size of new leaves can be a sign of good care, with the plant receiving the right balance of light, water, and nutrients. In your case, the fact that the new leaf is significantly larger is likely due to improved growing conditions compared to when the plant was in its previous setting.

Alocasias tend to produce larger leaves when they are thriving, particularly if they’re getting sufficient indirect light and consistent watering. Over time, as your plant matures, you may notice each new leaf growing slightly larger than the last, which is a positive sign of healthy growth.
My black velvets newest leaf is significantly larger than all the older ones. I didn’t notice until it was completely unfurled. It’s just getting bigger as it matures. I’m away from home but I’ll post some pics later this afternoon so you can see. I flatter myself that I’m just taking particularly good care of it and it’s maturing into a larger plant. It was quite small when I got it.
Absolutely normal for the new leaves to be larger if it’s getting the proper treatment that it needs. My bop has a new leaf coming in and it’s going to be bigger than the previous one and I love it 😍
Here’s mine
@Gustavo Hey Gustavo, it very interesting πŸ€” the more I look into Alocasia, the more fascinated I become. Thanks for your information, I’m taking it as a good sign and it was interesting to watch it unfurl. It’s only after the new leaf was out a few days, I noticed how much larger it was compared to the previous leaves
@Herbologybadger Wow Ashley, that’s a nice looking BVA ! And same thing with the latest leaf too ! I hope you enjoyed it unfurl as much as I did with mine when it decided to stop being shy ☺️
On a separate post, about yellow leaves, a few people commented about this guy and I was intrigued by his video about Alocasia leaves. For what it’s worth, you may enjoy it

@Ninabeena @Gustavo
Nina and Gustavo, you may like this video too although I’m not sure how true it is about β€œonly 3 leaves”, still entertaining πŸ˜€πŸ‘
@Herbologybadger By the way, Ashley, if I remember the photo correctly, your BVA was pride of place in your β€œinterior decoration” in the middle of it? I am also intrigued that at least one of my leaves is inverted so its edges flick up and not down like most leaves and it looks like your smaller leaves are doing a similar thing.
@Seymour you have an excellent memory. Yes, all my Alocasias are on the top most level where there is the most natural light and my humidifier gets to best. You know what they say, β€œthe squeaky wheel get the grease.” They are certainly the squeaky wheels of my collection. Thanks for sharing that video! I did enjoy it.
@Seymour you’re welcome! I’m no expert in Alocasia as you know but I’m enjoying getting to know them, so I’ve been having thorough conversations with my usual vendor/consultant. I thought he wouldn’t mint me asking and he didn’t. He’s a very good guy and I vouch for him, and did some further research as well.

Im going to look for leaves on my Alocasia and how they further develop now that spring arrived here in Brazil. Here’s hoping they’re larger!
I fi ally got one from a corm started. Yours is so happy and beautiful 😍
@COPlantMom Thanks StaceyC, that is kind of you to say. It sits in a large martini glass 🍸 with a few other plants and seems happy 😊 Apparently the larger new leaf is a good sign πŸ˜€ πŸ‘
