Hoya horror!!!
I’ve switched this Hoya wayetii to soil for close to a year now. I also added it to a veragated version! Every thing was going perfectly till of course the day I’m leaving for a long weekend. My sweet girls leaves just started to turn translucent and mushy!! So I quickly chopped all the good leaves to start to prop, and checked out the roots to see if there was some rotting and no, the roots were the picture of health absolutely no problem. And I did notice rot starting at the ends of the leaves. I never had this issue before with Hoyas their normally extremely hardy for me. The only think I can think of is the temperature change because we’re going into winter in the PNW but I’ve also never experienced such a extreme reaction. It’s also more humid during the winter here, anyways what do y’all think? #Hoya #HoyaHangout #HoyaHeads #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #PropagationStation #PlantTherapy #rot #hoyahorror #help

@hoyahead I did slow down a lot with watering waiting for the soil to dry 95% and roots are perfectly healthy? Can overwatering rot happen only on leaves?
@mars.is.mad hmm if it’s only on the leaves and there isn’t any root rot, I’m inclined to think it’s some type of bacterial infection as that tends to affect leaves over roots.
@hoyahead omg yeah! That’s a good point cuz there’s definitely no pests!
@noodles I try to pull the roots of and they were sturdy we’re was a couple stragglers that were dry but it didn’t look like it was spreading. The main system was nice and full and chunky when I snapped one sap came out. I’ll have to do a deeper look when I get home! I also didn’t smell rot
I think… this is defoliation. It happens when the roots get a bit dryer than usual and low humidity is coupled with it. It could have been caused by the sudden change in climate outdoors and your hvac condenser unit pulling the humidity out of the air that may have caused this. Defoliation with Hoyas happens fairly quickly but it could have possibly been remedied with raising the humidity and adding a water tray under the pot. 😬 Having a smart humidifier that can be scheduled helps when traveling.
I’m so sad and sorry to be the one to consider this to be the culprit but I went through this just recently! Sorry about your plant!

@mars.is.mad similar experience just last week where a few leaves looked like you describe. I was pretty sure I should’ve snoozed the last Greg watering but I went ahead and did it 🤷♀️. Right away I moved her to a sunnier window and after a few days those leaves started to look normal again. So I guess I got her before her turgor pressure went too high 👍🎉😄
@FitSedum I’ll definitely look more in to that! That sounds like the culprit! I was able to salvage some cuttings so hopefully by spring I’ll have her back!
@mars.is.mad I’d keep the roots and see if something comes back unless there are no viable nodes??? I’m hoping you can get something propagated! 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
@mars.is.mad I also agree with @FitSedum 💯.
