FFFFFFFFFFFFβ€”

Stupid fungus gnats. Screw their pathetic week-long lives.😑😑😑🀬🀬🀬 [don't mind the fact that it looks slightly overwatered, i'm holding back on water now]

Currently i'm trying to cover as much soil as possible, so to prevent any more fascist gnats. I read that they seem to be attracted to compost-based soils. Is this true? If so i might as well spend more on soilless ones [there's a good local company for it anyways] #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #PestControl fungusgnats">#fungusgnats #AlocasiaAddicts #Alocasia #alocasiaplatinum

It is true! But also the autocorrect πŸ˜†πŸ’™ Fascist gnats!
@LittleSongbird what autocorrect?
@LittleSongbird i nvr said i had autocorrect on
@Araceae LOL It was intentional? 🀣 Love it!
I feel you, and what’s even worse is whenever you think you have killed them all there’s always that one that comes and restores the colony
@Plants_Galore i found a gnat yesterday, then there was another, then suddenly there's like ten flying around the room. I swear they fly like drunks
Have you tried biological methods? Specifically nematodes? You can buy them online, they just get added to your water when you water and they actually eat the eggs and larvae of your fungus gnats so it stops them reproducing
@WelsomeRhodotus they can't be bought here. I dunno why, maybe something to do with fear of infection or smt [that's the government here for ya, they banned most amphibians in fear of salmonella]

The gardening scheme here is also abit old school sometimes, we don't even use cabinets for our plants
Oh no!! I used to see this on my tomato plant. I dunked neem oil and peppermint soap water on them. It worked for me! But you can try those fungicide/insecticide from shengsiong. Add lesser than what stated. It worked as well
@Syxhd oh really? Like the horti brand?
@Araceae dang! I haven’t tried other insecticide methods (with the exception of diy sprays which I’m sure you’ve already tried) but just read this on bentjaz.com.sg (image). Another biological route that isn’t nematodes πŸ€”πŸ€”
@PoisedAlbo really? I don't have any moss [that's alive anyway, but it's not sphagnum or peat]
@WelsomeRhodotus this one I'm familiar with. Specifically you want the isrealensis subspecies. It's meant for mosquito control, but i think it can be costly
@Araceae is it worth a shot if it’s your last straw? I did wonder whether a mosquito method might work for gnats due to the similar lifecycle
@PoisedAlbo I have too! But not for fungus gnats, they’re used for targeting aphids, mealies, thrips and spider mites though! 🐞 Alas, it sounds from the OP that Singapore might not allow biological controls for house plants
@PoisedAlbo nice! @Araceae I’m guessing you’ve probably tried the method too?
@Araceae I’ve had them fly into my eye before I’m retry sure they are drunks
Only thing that works long term in my experience is the sticky trapsπŸ™ˆ It takes some time but in the end all the adults go there. And they really work, you just have to be a little patientπŸ˜… This plant is now gnat-free, and there are no more gnats drowned in my cat's waterfountain that stands nearbyπŸ˜‚
@WelsomeRhodotus @PoisedAlbo unfortunately i'm not privileged to leave my my random stuff around, i'm still schooling, and i have a toddler brother that loves to grab my stuff and run. I guess i'll have to wait to repot and maybe pick up some traps
@Plants_Galore @LittleSongbird @PoisedAlbo @Syxhd @WelsomeRhodotus @MockingJay thanks for all the wonderful suggestions!
@Araceae I have the same issue nothing can be left out or else my toddler brother grabs it breaks it loses it or doesn’t put it back
@Araceae those sticky traps are great for enticing and collecting the adult fungus gnats. They’re VERY sticky and always find them getting stuck to my sleeve if I’m not being very attentive 🀭🀭🀭
@Araceae hi! πŸ‘‹ I see everyone else has had lots of helpful tips, so I hope you are making out ok. I just wanted to add, bottom watering for the immediate future instead of top watering will certainly help kill those pesky gnats. They like the top of the soil to be nice and wet/damp. So if you use bottom watering you may eliminate their habitat. Also people say sprinkling cinnamon on top of the soil helps, but I have not tried this. And lastly, a very diluted hydrogen peroxide solution of peroxide and water can be used for top watering to kill insects. It works pretty well! BUT some plants are more tolerant of this than others. So, it’s important to research your plant and the proper ratio of peroxide to water for your situation. Also start with a weak solution when in doubt. I remember that I have used a solution of 1/5 peroxide to 4/5 water in the past. But even less peroxide to water may be effective. It’s also good for the roots. But like I said, must be diluted!
100% agree that the yellow sticky traps are invaluable. If you cover the soil then add a trap, you should do well.

Just be careful where you put them if you have pets β€” I’ve had to peel one off a kitten in the past 😹
If top watering then they lay eggs on top of the soil. If bottom watering, they go for the drainage hole and lay eggs at the bottom of the pot. Also, their life cycle is 1 month. So, whatever method you're going to use, be persistent.
