Etiolated or not?

Question

I’m having some issues over here in the desert and was wondering if any of you would be able to help. I’ve had this balloon cactus in the same spot for three years. The only thing that has changed is the pot size. (I up potted it about 6 months ago) Anyway, all was well (it was growing out not up) until I noticed it started growing like this out the top. Is this how they grow or is etiolated? If it is etiolated do I lop the top off? Hello! So it is a bit strange that the ridges on the new growth aren’t unified and in line with the older growth. For etiolation you can look at the space in between each areole. If the space between is widening in the new growth compared to older growth; it’s likely etiolated. I hope this helps!

Hi Nikki! The top of your balloon cactus is not lined up because the apical meristem (the growing tip) naturally twists and slants as the plant matures. It’s totally natural 🪴💕
