Why is yellow?

I’ve had this tomato plant since spring, and he’s been doing great. Lovely tomatoes. But he’s turning yellow on some leaves. I know he needs a bigger pot, but is that the only cause of yellow leaves?? (Ignore the pots) #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #NewPlantMom #PlantAddict

okay i have some questions.

- what kind of light does it get?
- what kind of soil are you using?
- do you prune it?
- how often do you water it?
- does your pot have drainage?

and i also have a few things that may be able to diagnose your problem.

yellowing is often due to over or under watering, too much or too little light, and becoming root bound.

So, he’s outside all day. No real shade.

As for soil, it’s some general potting soil and perlite.

I try to water everyday because it’s so hot where I am. The soil usually dries really fast. But lately it hasn’t been so I’ve been watering it less. Just whenever the soil looks dry.

I believe it has drainage, but I don’t remember since I haven’t picked him in a long while. I’d check but I’m not home.
@newplantgirlies I prune the yellow leaves
@NatieBrea hmm.. do you have any reason to suspect pests? have you seen any little guys flying around or climbing on the leaves?
@newplantgirlies not on him, but I crickets love my plants, and flies have been a bit much lately. I usually water him at night
Hi Natalie, tomatoes are fruit, and are made of about 95% water. (They’re more hydrating than watermelon!). They also need a minimum of 6-8 hours of direct sun a day. You should be constantly pruning the leaves at the bottom of each plant- that helps it grow. When you get your first flowers- pick them immediately- you don’t want tomatoes from a young plant as the weight of the tomatoes will break the branches. You also want to make sure the leaves at the bottom of the plant is 2-3 inches up from your soil line. The bigger the pot, the bigger your fruit tree will get, and you’ll need a tomatoe trellis to hold it up- they get very heavy. Make sure the pot drains water- they will drink every time you water but don’t like wet feet. Most of the time yellow leaves means not enough water, but not knowing your climate and how much sun it’s getting- it could be sunburn. Pests love tomato plants especially hornworms- which I hate because they will chew your plant in no time- big old ugly green caterpillar!! And you’ll know because you’ll see them eating your plant- if you have them. They can also get spider mites and mealy bugs. I’ve been growing tomatoes for 25+ years- and I don’t know they were fruit or trees until a few years ago and was educated by a local farmer who grew the most amazing tomatoes!!
