Why is cactus turning white

It’s growing a new head but it’s turning white and me and my friend have no idea what it is somebody helpπŸ₯² #Cactus #MyPlantIsSad #help
I know @SirLiquorice has a lot of experience with cacti and can probably give you a better answer than: some of mine do the same thing. (:

I know it happens with age. I know that sometimes it can be from scaring or too much water once upon a time. The good part is you have new growth!

My domino cactus has something similar but my plant is still healthy.
@TatsugiriSushi it almost looks like it might possibly be scale. You can try using isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip and wipe a small area and see if you can scrape it off with a fingernail gently. If it comes off it may be a scale infestation. There’s many good products for scale treatment you can spray on a scrape it off. Bonide 8 and safer end all spray maybe will work. Look for any sprays that are designed to work to treat pests like scale. You may have to scrape it off as well as spray. Or you can use isopropyl and a qtip and treat the spots and keep treating until gone.
@sarahsalith it’s possible that it’s just scarring or corking but it does worry me a little that it may be a scale infestation possibly
@SirLiquorice that does look like scaleπŸ₯Ή
You can try ladybugs 🐞 as a natural alternative to sprays or isopropyl. Ladybugs prefer to eat aphids and will devour up to 50 a day, but they will also attack scale, mealy bugs, boil worms, leafhopper, and corn ear worm. They dine only on insects and do not harm vegetation in any way
But physically scraping off the scale and using isopropyl or a spray intended to kill scale will probably work the best. I haven’t tried ladybugs for scale specifically but I have used ladybugs a lot to control pests. I want to try praying mantis also and buy an egg pod from the local nursery. But I don’t think praying mantis will work for scale. Lacewing larvae work for certain pests like mealy bugs for sure. They say parasitic wasps will kill scale but I’ve never looked into that.
Some nurseries here in San Antonio will sell a tub of live ladybugs and lacewings. One sells praying mantis eggs. Some even have beneficial spider mites. At least for some pests that’s a great option to try some of those. But scale seems to be best treated with alcohol or sprays for scale and physically scraping it off as gently as possible
@sarahsalith Thank you so much !!!!
I have a corn plant trying to get it to root and water not working out
