Self watering Planters.

I am just wondering in general, what do you think of those? Does anyone use them? I have a set of two and I planted her in a self watering planter. Idk about that. I want the best for her to grow nice and beautiful 🀩 would you recommend repotting it or is it OK in a self watering? Thanks #SnowQueenPothos #PlantAddict #selfwateringplanter #PlantLove #helpneeded #PlantsMakePeopleHappy

Self watering is ok only if u don't fill it up. Plants dont like to sit in water. And if a plant likes to dry out before then its a bad choice. I have few in one but im really careful that they dont sit in extra water even if the pot seems elevated from bottom pot. Honestly i like the bottom watering method.
The idea of self watering is genius. But it causes major fungus gnats for me! I’ve rid myself of self watering planters for that exact reason! It gave me gnats like crazy because of the damp soil. I prefer just watering overhead or bottom watering.
Just go for the traditional pots; top or bottom watering. Self watering pots is the advertising gimmick. Plants don't like to be waterlogged: root rot, fungus gnats.
Self watering pots CAN work. But you need to research what species goes with them, as they can easily kill plants. Also, they're not the easiest thing out there. I think you'll save yourself more time and money by traditionally watering with normal pots. However, I think she should be fine! If her leaves start turning yellow put less water in the reservoir or just repot in a normal pot.
I personally have never had good luck with them so I donated mine.
Yeah - I splurged on a bunch of these from a store in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and I regretted doing so. They look cool when they are sparkling clean (which doesn’t last long) and then they just became problematic for me and my plants. Luckily I was able to return them all for a refund, but I definitely do not recommend them for any old plant - as others said, they may be a good fit for some types of plants, but be intentional in regards to the plant’s watering needs.
It's true they can work, but the issue is that most people keep it too full/too wet all the time. No plant wants their media to be that wet all the time unless it's a bog plant. A plant will need different watering throughout season and temperature changes as well, so self-watering pots are just kind of useless. You can still use it, just water it normally and ignore the "self-watering" feature. It's suppose to make taking care of plants easy, but it usually just causes fungus gnats and overwatering issues eventually. Best thing you can do is watch your plant and water it when the soil is getting dry πŸ’•
I learned the hard way as well after killing a couple plants with root root. I don’t use them anymore.
Your pothos won't like the self watering pot. It needs to have it's roots dry before watering.
You’re getting great advice about self-watering planters. I’m currently growing a Pothos in a self-watering planter. I use this type of planter to bottom water plants. πŸ™‚ I had to drill more drainage holes in the bottom of the self-watering pot and I never leave water in its reservoir. I love these self-watering planters for bottom watering plants.
▫️Have you considered using LECA, instead of soil? I think its a better choice than self-watering planters, if you’re looking for a guarantee to never overwatering your plants. Unfortunately, everything has pros and cons, even LECA. 😏 LECA is more expensive then soil (but it’s reusable) and compared to self-watering planters, it’s a little time consuming. But, your plants will love it. They grow larger and faster when their growing in LECA. For more info: https://www.ohiotropics.com/2021/06/18/houseplants-in-leca/
πŸ™I hope your oasis will live long and prosper.
I have 7 plants in self watering pots, and they are thriving. My spider plant was dying due to my cat eating her leaves numerous times while I was out, and I repotted her, and she's doing so good. I got a lucky bamboo, Chinese money plant, zebra, haworthia, and now a green spider. I'm trying to bring some love, and life an they are all doing better than they were. I don't see anything wrong with them.
I too got major fungus gnats from mine. I had a bunch of them and ended up loosing some plants from root rot and then just got rid of them all and got normal pots with drainage holes. Love the concept but not the actual end result.
The technology for self-watering planters have improved (or changed). Some of these self watering planters have rope or string in their reservoir, that draws water to the soil. I believe the rising popularity of growing houseplants in LECA has influenced the self-watering pot industry.
Right. Yeah just something I saw and thought wellll aint that some…. Ya know so I of course got a set of 3 of them. Not high dollar but yes the rope, down in the reservoir and I do have a water gauge I use. I check them and they’re never over watered and I do let it go dry for a bit but just out of curiosity I used them. I’m not that lazy lol πŸ˜‚ just yeah idk. I’m not liking them allll that much to be honest. I’ll probably keep the planters and just use them as regular ole planters and just get something to throw under them now ;)
