What substrate do you choose for a chunky mix?
Hello planty people! 💕🌿 🫶 I am in the process of slowly moving over most of my collection to a simple soil-less mix after getting some great advice from @SuperbRaspfern (and while there is nothing wrong with that back to roots soil, I’ve decided to save it for outdoors instead, and have everything inside be the same so I don’t get confused).
1/3 coco coir, washed and buffered**
1/3 perlite
1/3 orchid bark
**While Shannon’s mix includes peat, I’m substituting coco because I simply have a ton of it
But now I’m wondering what substrate to pick for my plants Greg info card?? Does it really matter? There is coco, perlite, and orchid bark, but only individually.
🤚 For those that have a similar mix, what have you found is the best option that works with Greg’s watering/fertilizing reminders?
Thank you 🙏
FOR TAX REASONS ⚖️ 🗃️, here are some pictures of my lovely ctenanthe, whom I only got 1 month ago, and is just CRUSHING IT with a TON of new roots, new leaves, and a whole new offshoot!! 😱 I’ve been watching it [the new offshoot] for a week and I just noticed this brand new baby leaf 🙌 🍃 Will you just look at it?? 🫶

Not sure what others will say but in my own experience I research each plant info online and find what its natural habitat would require in soil.
Because different plants have specific needs, so it's best to research the requirements of each type to ensure optimal growth.
Then choose what best matches the percentage used in my mix to match what Greg has. Sometimes this does not always work but I always try. And the rest is to follow what that plant shows me if it is happy or not with the water, light, soil mix.
This probably didn’t answer your question the best.

No, thank you much @CourtlyKingfern ! This is good information to have on a soil question!
What I neglected to mention was my own environmental conditions! 🤦♀️ Since I live a pretty wet climate (Pacific Northwest), I have recently found that mixes similar to this one I now use have to, pretty much, be my base level/starting point across the board. Then depending on the plant it’s whether it not I add more drainage (or rarely on the other hand; add castings/compost etc) Otherwise my plants just stay wet for a long, long time (queue sad succulents/🐍 plant!) I even have my African Violet in a mix like this! and that was something I instinctually did before I even really knew what I was doing (if I even do now, lol!)
I appreciate your response 🥰🌿🫶

@DreamMachine Good morning 🌞 That is my basic mix as well but since I'm in a drier climate instead of coco coir or peat I use succulent soil mixed with Perlite and orchid bark. The different percentages depend on the plant. I'll increase or decrease the soil amount depending on what the plant requires. I've never seen a Ctenanthe plant before! I love those leaves!! 😍
@DreamMachine hi Nadia 👋. What an excellent question!!!🙋♀️. I’m always in a quandary as to which one to pick! I’ve picked bark because it holds more moisture than coco and I don’t want more waterings for those plants due to high humidity here. I’ve never picked pear light (lol talk to text) because it would want more water and definitely fertilizer if you have that notification on. Your tax 📁✅ is well paid! Your ctenanthe slays me every time you post pics! 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠 & newbie leaf 🌱🥹👶 🥰🥰🥰
@princesspitstop @MariansOasis oh my goodness I somehow didn’t get notifications for your replies! Glad I just decided to check 🤪 Marian that is EXACTLY what I was pondering, which features would be the most important for watering notifications in a humid climate! I I agree on the “pear light,” lol, for me it’s also between the coco and the bark. And also since it’s a substrate that doesn’t exactly have tons of nutrients I have been very lightly fertilizing with superthrive almost every watering. (With flushes of plain water every 1-3 months).
But now I’m curious—orchid bark holds more water than coco?? I thought it was the opposite and the coco was my moisture retaining ingredient in that mix! 😮 Or maybe does bark retain more water after it’s been soaked? I’m not soaking my substrate anymore (it just stays TOO wet 😆) so I wonder if coco would hold more moisture than the bark if I’m just pouring over the top and not giving the bark time to soak?
And some extra ctenanthe tax 📂 for you two! I was so focused on the one new offshoot that I didn’t see THREE MORE off shoots just starting 😱🥰 I used to be scared of ctenanthe’s simply because the name seemed too fancy for me with the silent ‘C’ 🤣 It is fast becoming one of my top favorites!

@MariansOasis @princesspitstop oh and fun fact for you and anyone else! Ctenanthe (teh-NAN-thee) is in the marantaceae/prayer plant family along with marantas, calathea, geoppertia, and stromanthe (strow-MAN-thee). But they are SUPER easy going especially compared to some of the more finicky “calatheas” (geoppertias). I’d recommend for anyone who wants to have a prayer plant they can keep alive easily 😂

@CutePolypremum Nothing wrong with ‘regular!!’ 😁 Your oasis is lovely and I can just imagine then all huge now 🌿 Is philodendron rose the variety? It’s beautiful! I also love what ever it is you have (tray? Stool?) that says it’s not hoarding if it’s plants 😂
Thank you for sharing! Your plants seem to be loving that wonder soil 😊💕✨

Hi dear Nadia!
Thanks for your sweet reply!
Well...Greg ID it as a Philodendron...which I know she is. But, they said she's a Prince Orange 🍊, which I know she's not because of her rose color.
To be honest, I don't really care too much about their scientific names, having enough trouble with the names I gave them. Lol ❤️ 😆
Am approaching the ripe old age of 80 and feeling it.
My lovely Tribe keeps me going!
Oh yes..."It's not hoarding if it's plants" is actually a Lazy Susan which my best friend got for me. It's so appropriate!
But, for me, I'm very limited with how many plants 🪴 I can have because of such limited space.
It's become almost like a game of chess...figuring out where to.put them so they get enough light and space.
Am not complaining 😌 as it always seems to work out!
I posted them all on @Philo.
He just started a new # and am sure he'd love to have you and everyone join, if you haven't already.
An awesome thing about Wonder Soil is that it expands as water is slowly added to it. You get a big bang for the buck.
The first time I used it, I didn't read the instructions and just put the dry soil and plant in its new pot and then added water.
It was like a volcano 🌋, with soil flowing out of the pot. A sight to see! 😆
And...a real mess.

@CutePolypremum oh my goodness I can just imagine the soil volcano 🤣 But I do really like that option nowadays with shipping a smaller size item only to have it expand so much!! I don’t drive, so anything that I can get shipped that doesn’t cost way more than it would in a store is much appreciated.
And I agree!personally I wouldn’t be able to remember all the scientific names if I didn’t enter them in to Greg first 😂 With a lot of them I have to know the name first because as we both know Greg doesn’t always ID the plant correctly 😂 As long as you and your plants are happy, what’s in a name? I admire it from afar! I will definitely go check out your pictures now 😊 I hope you have a lovely rest of your day!
