Are Those Pests?
What is that on the underside of the leaf? I sprayed it with insecticidal soap last night because I just brought it home yesterday. And, Iβve never dealt with pests before as Iβm new to gardening. So, Iβm unable to readily identify pests. I just want to make sure if it is a pest that it gets dealt with. #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #help #PlantAddict #NewPlantMom #NewPlants #PlantAddict #PestControl #SucculentSquad #OrangeGrass

@OrangeGrass itβs always better to be safe than sorry. When I zoom in it gets grainy so I canβt really tell if itβs white bumps or a powdery looking substance. Either you should be wary of. Can you rub it with your finger and it comes off? Hereβs a preventative spray I use regularly, specifically on new plants. It covers most of the pests. I use it when I water my plants.
@TheOddAsity do you put all 5 cups of the boiled cinnamon water in the mix?
@TheOddAsity it did come off when I scraped it. Thank you for the insecticide spray! I was thinking I needed to buy more of those ready to use ones lol. Would this mixture work for killing any existing pests as well?
@LiftLashPlant I use what fits into the spray bottle. Since some range between 24-38 oz. I need to update my infographic, but I also use cinnamon oil if I am short on time.
@OrangeGrass yes!! It works for all the houseplant pests. It protects from fungus, and other things as well.
@OrangeGrass the first photo, I would get a cotton swab and dip it in alcohol and wipe it away. Treat with the at home spray I gave you or any other wide range spray. The second photo looks like potential aphids, which insecticidal soap deals with a well. You just have to be consistent with reapplying to catch all the phases of the bugβs life.
@TheOddAsity Does the strength of the alcohol matter? I have 91% isopropyl alcohol
@OrangeGrass it doesnβt matter. The alcohol is just an emulsifier for oil in the spray. And when using on plants, 91% evaporates faster. But both will kill a mealy bug or any other pest on contact.
@TheOddAsity Thank you so much! All of the information you have provided has been helpful. Do I have to keep wiping away those white looking things if they re-appear?
@OrangeGrass you can spray the whole plant with water in your tub or outside (depends on your current weather) and then spray down your plant with the spray. About 10 days later, spray it with the spray. Then 10 more days. Make sure youβre getting the soil too. Neem oil can cause photosensitivity for a few hours so, make a mental note of that when using the spray. If you see the with things reappear, definitely wipe it away. But the smell of this spray is strong and insects donβt like it.
@TheOddAsity Okay, thank you for your help! I appreciate it! Would you mind if I contact you regarding any trouble I might have? Iβm nervous that Iβm going to kill my plants by doing something wrong, lol.
@OrangeGrass please reach out! We have all been the newbie, we all have been afraid to not know what to do or feel like a pest. Thatβs what this community is for!
@TheOddAsity I always just fill a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol and spray the whole plant down till itβs completely wet. (Warning: best to do it outside. I do it inside but the fumes from the alcohol gets very very strong) make sure to get it into every crease and under leaves too. Let it sit for about 5 minutes and then I use a regular spray bottle to dampen it all a bit. I feel the alcohol is drying and feel better after misting where I doused it. Could be wrong about that tho. Haha
@NovelRosaryvine I do the same with alcohol in a bottle. π I have only dealt with this one time. Since then, a qtip has sufficed for a suspected pest. I have been really lucky!
@NovelRosaryvine What is the dilution ratio for rubbing alcohol to water or do you just spray fully concentrated ruin g alcohol? And, thank you so much for sharing! I will definitely try this. I tried neem oil and it killed one of my plants, so I donβt want to mess around with it anymore :/
@OrangeGrass I donβt dilute at all. Straight rubbing alcohol and spray
@NovelRosaryvine Does it affect new growth and buds? Neem oil killed those too when I tried using it diluted with water and Castile soap. Sorry for asking questions. Iβm just worried about harming the plants.
@OrangeGrass I havenβt noticed any issues at all personally. Asking questions is how we learn!! :)
@NovelRosaryvine Thatβs great to hear! I will definitely give this a try. Iβm still having issues with some other plants that came with these ones. Iβm at a loss for what to do honestly.
@NovelRosaryvine Hi again, I was wondering if the time of the day I spray the plant with rubbing alcohol matters? Is it okay to spray it even when itβs under a grow light? itβs not gonna cause the leaves to burn? Or should I do it at night? Tysm π
@OrangeGrass I have always put them under grow lights after. Itβs never hurt anything, plus it evaporates pretty quickly. You should be fine at any time. Sorry for such a late reply!!
@NovelRosaryvine Thank you! I very much appreciate your help. And, no worrries! Happy holidays to you and your family β₯οΈ
@OrangeGrass no problem!! Hope you have a good holiday too!!
