What are these white bumps on my #waterpropagation? π±π§
ππ½ Hey there, #GregGang! Wanted to come on here with another informational post now that we are getting to warmer temps! Warmer temperatures means it is a good time to start #propagating!
π§ My favorite method of propagating several different plants is by using the water propagation method! Plop a cutting with a node in water, add a #Pothos cuttings (to accelerate root formation) and watch it grow! I love being able to look at the roots while they form. This is a good way to see if your cutting is rooting well AND if it is ready to transplant to soil!
β Now, Iβve noticed several people in the past ask on Greg about these white bumps found on cuttings propagating in water. I figure, βwhy not make a post others (and myself) can reference for future questions?!β, so here I am!
β¨ These white bumps are known as either a βcallusβ or root nubs. From personal experience and testimony from others, these are completely normal and safe! These are known as differentiated cells that forms when a cutting is in the rooting process. These will show up when your plant is successfully rooting in water. Roots should emerge from these bumps within a few days to a few weeksπ€©
π Keep in mind that no mealy bug, spider mite or even gnat can survive underwater. This is no bug or pest, this is a good sign that your cutting is propagating successfully. If youβd like to accelerate the rooting process, make sure to place it in a sunny, warm spot where it gets bright indirect light π
I place some of my cuttings in my East window where it gets all morning sun, and medium light in the afternoon. I also have several cuttings (rooting in water) that are placed under a grow light for 8-12 hours a day βοΈ
If for any reason your plant has these but you are unsure if it is normal or a pest, donβt hesitate to tag me and ask! π

@SirLiquorice Yes! Tomato plants do this a lot and many fear itβs pests. Sometimes theyβll go as far as tossing it, but little did they know it was a perfectly good plant π₯²
Just trying to help those out that donβt know since this tends to be a very good sign of the rooting process! π

@dreamlettuce yeah if you didnβt know you would definitely think itβs pests. It can look concerning almost
@SirLiquorice yes! And most people plant tomatoes waaaaay too shallow. You can stick it in soil all the way up to the first set of leaves (all those little hairs on the stem will become roots). Then you end up with a much stronger plant! π±βοΈβ€οΈ
@dreamlettuce Woohoo those are roots. Congratulations Dariana. I have some plants propagating in pothos water right now. I am rooting a Philodendron Brasil.
@TwistedThreads wow those roots are absolutely amazing! Congrats on the successful propagations! πΏπ§β¨
Let's goooooo @dreamlettuce I just got a philo Jose Buono and a Billitiae cutting to pop these callus root nodes in the prop tank.
Been out of town so I haven't been able to post their track! SoonTM
